Problem statement[edit]
There is a lack of consistency over the use of maps in infoboxes. In particular, the names of parameters are not standardised, and some infoboxes use more parameters than others. This is confusing for editors, and needlessly increases the complexity of template maintenance.
Proposed solution[edit]
The intention is to standardise map usage in infoboxes, so that there is one common set of parameter names, with predictable usage and resultant display. A similar solution was recently and successfully applied to the parameters for coordinates in infoboxes
The purpose of this page is to document and track work intended to standardise the use of map-related parameters in infoboxes. Please discuss on the talk page.
Proposed process[edit]
- Survey parameter names used for maps in infoboxes

- Develop consensus for which parameters are needed, and the best names for them
- Make a list of existing parameters and which standard parameters should replace each one (may be specific to each infobox)
- Resolve handling of edge cases or exceptions
- Convert each infobox to use the standard parameters (in addition to the existing deprecated parameters)
- Update template documentation
- Track deprecated parameters using maintenance categories
- Convert transclusions of converted infoboxes (primarily a bot job; some transclusions will have to be cleaned manually)
- Remove deprecated parameters from each infobox once the parameters are no longer used
- Add tracking of unsupported parameters to all infoboxes in order to catch edge cases
Issues[edit]
- Is there an existing model which will work for all other infoboxes?
- Some infoboxes display more than one map
- Should all infoboxes use Template:Location map (or "map+" or "map many"; see below for links)? What are the pros and cons to this option?
- Pay special attention to {{Infobox settlement}} and the 50+ templates that transclude it.

- Template:Geobox coor is a redirect to Template:coord which has no parameters in its wikitext.
- Various modules are invoked by the template wikitext. Some which are probably unrelated to maps are ignored here.
