The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Indian books by writer and purge as suggested by Marcocapelle. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 01:24, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Overlapping category Mason (talk) 01:17, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The category hierarchy is very confusing but these aren't really overlapping categories. e.g. Quichotte (novel) is a book by an Indian (origin) author but isn't an Indian book. I believe this would be the case for books by many authors of Indian origin. I think a restructuring of the category hierarchy is more in order than merging these two categories. —SpacemanSpiff 03:15, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm... well, either way the category would need to be renamed to make that clearer. So something like Books by writers of Indian descent? Then the question becomes whether that should be category? Mason (talk) 04:41, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't disagree on the category name. I believe the category tree needs a relook to sort out the hierarchy and nomenclature. I'm not sure how to go about it, especially since many authors would be affected -- Naipaul, Rushdie, J Lahiri, V Seth etc where their books would fit in one or a few times, both. —SpacemanSpiff 05:25, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is confusing indeed. Merge as nominated and purge if it concerns books by authors who had migrated to another country. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:54, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge/rename/populate/reparent as nominated. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 02:41, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: merge, or rename, re-parent and populate, "alt-right" is not a defining characteristic of these politicians. After the rename, several far-right politicians by nationality subcategories can be added to Category:Far-right politicians in Europe. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:27, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge. Although the term alt right has become popular in the U.S., there is not really a need to rename what is, in fact, the rightmost part of the political spectrum. Place Clichy (talk) 16:08, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus. Iraqi Revolt has been moved no fewer than 13 times, so its title is not exactly uncontroversial as required by C2D. The last RM at the talk page resulted in no consensus (neither then-current title nor the proposed title at said RM were the now-current title); nom is advised to open an RM in the hopes of consensus. The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 21:04, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The category's title is vague and it is unclear what is defining about being derived from humans. Races can look totally human without actually being derived from them whatsoever, races can also look completely inhuman while still being derived from humans, meaning that it is essentially just a minor lore point with no bearing on the race itself. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 19:27, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:22, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Their status as human descendants is not a minor point. Dimadick (talk) 21:47, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that you believed its about human descendants when it's actually not is further evidence that it's too vague to be a category.
While it could be renamed to "Fictional human descendants", it would then rule out most of the articles in the category, most of which are of supernatural or artificial origin. It would only include the Eloi and Morlocks. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 22:13, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose merger, instead rename to Category:Fictional human-descended species. AHI-3000 (talk) 04:31, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • For example Abhuman is a term used to distinguish a separation from normal human existence. This has nothing to do with descent. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:29, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Merge Category contents are a mess, with no clear distinction between possible redefinitions. Some contents, such as the Azi, can belong under Category:Fictional transhumans. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 20:30, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Merge per nom. There might be wisdom in creating something like Category:Fictional human-descended species, but the current category is not that. Renaming would entail puring most of the category, which seems like more work than just starting from scratch. HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 02:50, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Substack writers[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: selective merge to Category:Bloggers. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 02:25, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Writing for Substack does not seem to be a defining characteristic for any of the people in this category, per WP:COPDEF, WP:DEFINING, WP:CATDEF, WP:BLPCAT, but rather an incidental aspect. The barrier to being a Substack writer appears nil. While some people might be notable as bloggers (Category:Bloggers) regardless of platform, or consistently associated with a certain publication (e.g. Category:The New York Times writers), we don't generally categorize people who just happen to have a particular blog or social media account (e.g. no Category:Tumblr posters or Category:Facebook users or Category:Blogspot.com writers). While having a Substack profile may be verifiable, verifiability is not the same as 'definingness', per WP:NONDEFINING --Animalparty! (talk) 04:57, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support in principle, but these should be selectively merged to bloggers, because that's effectively what they are. Mason (talk) 04:58, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete (or manually merge) per nom. I checked a number of articles, and did not get the impression that a manual merge is needed. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:27, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep The recent Atlantic article by Jonathan M. Katz on the politics of Substack writers caused me to review some of the writers and this category is informative.Kmccook (talk) 15:05, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • It may be fine to include this information in the Substack article but it does not require a category. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:24, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Katz found unspecified "scores" (at least 16!) of writers publishing white-supremacist and/or Nazi content, out of over 17,000 paid writers on Substack (less than 1 percent), and calls it a Nazi problem. Good for him. That doesn't mean Katz, nor anyone else warrants placement in this category, per the above guideline, as well as WP:NOTEVERYTHING. We don't include data or categories merely because it's true or because some might find it useful or interesting. --Animalparty! (talk) 22:36, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep and trim (creator). At least some of the people in this category are defined by their writing on Substack, or at least are primarily known for their work as Substack writers. Matthew Yglesias and Noah Smith (writer) are two examples whose work I read from time to time, and they fully dedicate their time to Substack blogging. feminist🇭🇰🇺🇦 (talk) 04:47, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But are they commonly described as Stubstack writers? Why is this different from blogging? Mason (talk) 05:45, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: I am worried that this category falls under WP:SHAREDNAME, with numerous unrelated categories that simply have the word "group". A move to Category:Groups could fix the issues, but it also may not. Either way, something should probably be done to address the issue. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 00:36, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
