I don't really think that was the intent. If I have to guess, I suppose that the creator considered that members of the Nurmagomedov family were, Soviet for some, Russian for others, but that they were still a family. I’m speaking to result, not intent, and defining categorization, and not any particular categorized subject. “The Soviet Union and Russia” are two states and deserve their own identity in “by country” categories, as do Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, as well as the Russian empire. (Come to think of it, perhaps “by country” should possibly be applied as such, and not according to state, especially in the case of multinational empires like the Romanov and the Soviet.)

That was pretty much my rationale until my categorization was reverted by User:Adavidb and User:331dot who indicated James A. Garfield was not a state legislator when he was assassinated. Delete, do not merge. Even if these people were assassinated for political reasons, it does not seem in a majority of cases to be linked to having formerly held legislative office or local council membership. Assassinated politicians may be the best way to describe them, except when there's already a better way to define them such as assassinated presidents. The fact that Reinhard Heydrich or Abraham Lincoln had been, at some point in their life, members of the Prussian Landtag or the Illinois State Legislature is pretty remote from the circumstances of their death. In the rare but not impossible case that someone was assassinated, for something they did as legislator, after they had left office, and that the consensus of reliable sources agree upon this link, then they belong in Assassinated (sub)national legislators because that is defining for them. I appreciate the creator for taking bold initiatives, but this is really a trivial intersection. Place Clichy (talk) 00:11, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment: when I find in these categories a first-rank politician such as Louis Barthou, whose assassination together with King Alexander I of Yugoslavia in 1934 in Marseille is most notable, I believe there may be room within Category:Assassinated politicians by type for Category:Assassinated government ministers. That's clearly more defining for Barthou (then foreign minister), and probably a number of others, than Assassinated former national legislators in Europe). Comment. In the case "they belong in Assassinated (sub)national legislators [...]", I have to point out that it could also be the case that the motives of the assassin are unknown and the murdered person held several public offices. Even if the person is killed being an incumbent and the motive is not known, it could only be speculated that the motive was the incumbent position, when the person could have had a grudge stemming when the politician held a previous office.

Also, without having a specific example in mind, there could be cases where the politician assassinated is incumbent in one office but was killed for situations stemming from their previous office. Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 17:55, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Scatterbrained ramble I'm not sure exactly what kind of merger is now being proposed. Is it renaming this category to Category:Writing systems derived from Chinese characters, and then reparenting it and Category:Chinese scripts into a new supercat Category:Writing systems using Chinese characters?

I'm not really a CFD person so I'm not sure if the distinction is one we should keep or not, but we do currently distinguish between writing systems that use a familiar and relatively circumscribed set of genetically related logograms, and writing systems that use some combination of those logograms and orthographic derivations. Category:Chinese scripts holds most of the first type, and also some outliers like List of Chinese–Japanese false friends (which probably just belongs in Category:Chinese characters). Category:Writing systems derived from the Chinese holds the second list item from two sentences ago.

As a confounding element, some of the articles in each category have to do with the written expression of Chinese languages (Bopomofo, Cantonese Bopomofo, and Nüshu here; Sichuanese characters, Singapore Chinese characters, Written Cantonese, and Written Chinese at the other category): all the rest talk about languages other than Chinese.

I suppose the main problem really is that we don't have a culturally neutral term for 字 the way we have the word letter for alphabetical writing system glyphs genetically derived from the Phoenician. Otherwise we could do away with the whole confounding "Chinese" descriptor.

The term "script" in the Chinese orthography sense isn't really ambiguous, and its technical use is super well established in English language literature: see e.g. Small seal script, Ancient Script Texts, Clerical script etc. However the meaning of the word doesn't match up with the contents of the category, which is using "script" more like "alphabet". I'm not sure I see the a rename from Category:Chinese scripts to Category:Chinese family of scripts solving that. I think the proposed title Category:Writing systems using Chinese characters is precise and correct, but it's a little clunky. Of course, not all of these writing systems use the same orthographic lexicon: for example there are Kanji which are not Hanzi and vice versa, and presumably the same goes for Hanja etc, but I don't think that invalidates the proposed name. Well, I don't think I suggested anything for this one: I just agreed with your proposed rename title.

But I'm not sure I'm 100% sold on merging those two categories. I think it's worthwhile to continue to distinguish between Chinese characters and written figures derived therefrom. Maybe Category:Writing systems using Chinese characters for this one, and Category:Writing systems using Chinese character derivatives for the other? Or Category:Writing systems using modified Chinese characters for the other? I'm not entirely opposed to a catmerge either, for clarity, but it does seem a little imprecise if we're going to be using the term "Chinese characters" when talking about e.g. Bopomofo. Keep Provençal and Gascon, merge Category:Occitan-language Occitan writers as uselessly redundant. The issue here is that for a very long time (from the Middle Ages to the mid-20th century), this language was called either provençal, gascon or other regional names like auvergnat, until the consensus was widely accepted that it was a unique language, and the archaic word occitan chosen for it. So... it is in fact defining from some writers to have written in provençal etc. because that's how reliable sources would describe them (and probably themselves and their contemporaries too). The third category is nonsensical though. Following the closure of this CfD, I lastly suggest to merge Category:Occitan writers into Category:Occitan-language writers. I think the original title is more accurate, but it's a weird category. Like, Li Si is in there, but Zhong Yao, Xu Shen, Qian Xuantong, and Guo Moruo aren't. Large Seal script and Small seal script are in both this category and Category:Chinese script style; Oracle Bone script is in this one but not that one, and Clerical script is in that one but not this one. Meanwhile Chinese characters of Empress Wu is entirely different, and the only article that is actually about characters (字) rather than script ~~(文)~~ (書). whoops 14:19, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
I guess since we're here, I should have a constructive idea, but I rarely come to CfD. Maybe add Oracle Bone script to Category:Chinese script style, upmerge Chinese characters of Empress Wu to Category:History of the Chinese language(??), and then delete the category, or rename it to something like Category:Chinese script tastemakers and add more dead dudes to keep Li Si company. Right now we've got articles in this category for three different reasons, and none of the reasons is pulling its full complement of candidate articles into the category. Obviously some holidays (e.g. Christmas) have special foods that are uniquely associated with that holiday and not generally eaten at other times of the year, but Independence Day isn't like that: there aren't special "Independence Day" foods per se, and Independence Day parties just feature the same menu as any other summer barbecue or cookout, so the foods here aren't defined by any special association with Independence Day in particular. @Thinker78: The trouble is that this category is currently not in fact about heads of government. It is exclusively filled with leaders like e.g. Park Chung Hee, President of South Korea in 1962-1979, who are executive presidents with direct control of government, as is the case for the President of the United States. I suspect this will result in a massive WP:TRAINWRECK, but:

Merge Category:Fictional characters by franchise and gender and its subcategories as being an intersection of unrelated things. Gender simply has no relation to franchise, these things are entirely disconnected from one another, and some entries are not even franchises, but works by a certain author. This is pure overcategorization. Category:Bond girls is the only one that may be kept as-is, since it has its own main article. Category:Disney Princess characters as well, but this is mostly because "Disney Princess" is in itself a franchise.

Merge Category:Fictional characters by occupation and gender, Category:Fictional males by occupation‎, Category:Fictional females by occupation‎ and everything therein that is simply "fictional male/female ____" as arbitrary categorizations. Keep Category:Fictional characters by gendered occupation and its subcategories as a subcategory of Category:Fictional characters by occupation.
