A FRIENDLY REMINDER FOR MY STUDENTS & OTHERS AT WIKIMEDIA TRAINING EVENTS
Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:
  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Ilna ma narawk fuq il-Wikipedija. Jien biss mill-amministaruri għadni attiv. Għalhekk nixtieq naħtar lil Toni Sant bħala amministarur. Mingħalija int l-uniku burokrata, allura int biss tista' tagħmlu amministratur. Ma naħsibx li hemm bżonn li ngħaddu mill-proċedura formali la jiena u int biss hemm bħala amministraturi. Hawn ħa nħallilek l-informazzjoni dwaru.

@Leli Forte: - jaħgmel sens dan kollu. Fil-fatt ridt nistaqsik dwar min għandu r-rwol ta' Bureaucrat u/jew SysOp fuq mt.Wikipedia għax dawn kollaboraturi essenzjali għall-amministraturi, speċjalment f'lingwa minuri bħal m'hi tagħna. Ikkonfondejt għax ma deher li ħadd li huwa attiv għandu dawn ir-rwoli fuq mt.wikimedia.
Thanks, Leli. I'll leave it to you to resolve the situation as you see fit. Experienced Wikimedia Movement colleagues will undoubtedly offer a helping hand if needs be. I'm more than happy to continue taking your lead on all this right now.
As for the invitation to join the next Wikimedia Community Malta gathering, I perhaps should have been clearer about the fact that this is now being held online, as we're all observing social distancing regulations, aside from the fact that we're not all based in Malta anyway. :-). You're still welcome to join us, if you wish, whenever it's convenient for you. We'll be live at this link on Thursdays and Fridays throughout April (except during the so-called Holy Week) starting at 6pm. In any case, I'm sure there will be other opportunities for us to meet in the foreseeable future, should you prefer that. --ToniSant (talk) 10:49, 30 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Naqbel miegħek, imissna jkollna 4 amministraturi u tnejn minnhom għandhom ikunu burokrati u/jew SysOp. Forsi tista' tħajjar tnejn oħra mill-grupp tagħkom għal dan ix-xogħol. L-aħjar nistennew 'il Chris Portelli sal-aħħar tal-ġimgħa, jekk ma' jweġibx, forsi tista' tissuġġerili kif nistgħu nipproċedu. Jekk tippreferi li nitkellmu bl-email ibgħatli l-indirizz fuq messenger jekk ma tridux jidher hawn.

Saħħiet

Leli Forte (talk) 09:23, 31 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Grazzi ħafna, @Leli Forte:. Għaddejtlek l-indirizz tiegħi tal-email fuq il-messenger. Iva, m'hemmx għalfejn inkomplu nieħdu moħħ kulħadd hawn anke jekk it-trasparenza fil-proċess tal-ħatra tiegħi bħala amministratur fuq mt.wikipedia tajjeb li titkompla, speċjalment jekk mhux każ li niġi elett regolarment. Nistennew lil Chris Portelli sal-aħħar tal-ġimgħa u mmexxu skond ma jiġri. Inċidentalment, tista' anke tibgħatli email minn hawn jekk għandek indirizz tal-email abbinat mal-kont tiegħek bħala utent fuq Wikipedia. Administrator on Maltese Wikipedia[edit]

Hi ToniSant,

Apologies for the late reply. I have now completed the approval for your administrator candidacy and you should now have the appropriate roles. Congratulations on your new role and all the best in this project :)

Chrisportelli (talk) 07:34, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Chrisportelli: thank you very much for this! I am thrilled not only to take on the role but also to see that you're active again on mt.wikipedia. @Leli Forte: and I keen to reignite the proper administration of mt.wikipedia and would love your input as we proceed. I, for one, would love to hear your thoughts on serving as a sysop on the Maltese-language Wikipedija over the past several years. We can do this on-wiki either here or, preferably, on mt.wikipedia but if you prefer to do it off-wiki I'm sure that would be better than no further communication. :) --ToniSant (talk) 10:02, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Discussing Islamic Terms for Wikipedija Malti[edit]

Merħba ToniSant,

I would like to discuss further when it comes to certain Islamic terms here, although maybe there are many more discussions already held on other articles on mt.wikipedia, but I would just like to reassure myself and to avoid giving difficulties to others if the terms I would use as the main article title could pose a problem. I also would run into issues where I ran out of resources to refer as my dictionary at times, prompting me at times to coin new terms. As of now, I think I want to address the Maltese terms for these: 1. salah/salat (the Islamic worshiping ritual) -> sala/Sala jew salat? 2. adhan/azan/azaan/adan (the call to salah) -> adan, l-adan 3. zakat/zaka (the almsgiving) -> żaka jew żakat? 4. Eid al-Fitr (this phrase is perfectly translatable/to be Malti-sised) -> Għid il-Fitr/Għid il-Fatar (jew bħala ortografija alternattiva biss?) 5. Eid al-Adha -> Għid l-Adħa 6. Names of certain Muslim/Arab figures (reason being in certain Arab countries they would write their own Romanisation of names such as in Tunisian: Muhammad -> Mhammed, Karim -> Krim, Al-Amin -> L-Emin, I figure out a Maltese Romanisation of names are also very suitable and is being used in certain names such as Muhammad -> Muħammed) And perhaps other more complex Islamic terms as well, as they are somehow involved in describing both Islamic and medieval history. And again, I am very sorry for my linguistics nerdiness :') Grazzi. ~~ ~~ SidAlmoħadMuwaħħid (talk) 14:00, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @SidAlmoħadMuwaħħid - thank you very much for your note. I don't feel I'm the right person to respond to your request for discussion. However, if you don't mind me saying, I know enough to think some of your concerns come from the fact that Maltese is not a language in which you're proficient. No offense meant, of course! The main sources I'd refer you to would be anything written on the subject by either Edmund Teuma (for example, this) and/or Martin Zammit. They are the Maltese linguistic experts on Islamic and Arabic terms in Maltese. Sticking to them as sources is a guarantee that you're basing whatever you feel works best on years of research and scholarship on the subject matter.
Unfortunately, I don't know any Wikimedians who are very familiar with these essential sources, otherwise I'd gladly refer you to them. I don't feel competent enough to discuss this matter with you beyond referring to these sources. Perhaps you could post this on the Maltese Wikipedija Pjazza and/or the Wikimedia Community Malta Facebook page and/or group. Ir-risq! -- ToniSant (talk) 16:35, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply @ToniSant! Yes I've read some of Martin Zammit's writings before, most in English and some in Maltese especially when it comes to the relationship between Maltese and Arabic. Those writings really somehow helped me in my Maltese and at approximating Arabic terms into Maltese (which surprisingly boosts my proficiency in estimating the Maltese verbs and plurals :D). With that, said I'll consider your suggestions in the future and I am still trying my best to be extra proficient with Maltese ;). Madankollu niżżik ħajr u r-risq għalik wkoll! SidAlmoħadMuwaħħid (talk) 05:08, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@SidAlmoħadMuwaħħid please don't be disheartened! And keep up the great work, it's all good and essential in the end. I'm happy to say that your Maltese is probably better than that of some native speakers, who find it harder than you to write this language. :) -- ToniSant (talk) 09:34, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ToniSant thanks for that, at least I'm glad to know my current progress with Maltese by a native Maltese speaker :D although I might still have problems when it comes to speaking since I don't really have a chance to speak with anyone that speaks Maltese XD. SidAlmoħadMuwaħħid (talk) 22:48, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikimedia Community Malta is organizing an edit-a-thon in collaboration with Wikimedia Morocco in the coming days. I'll make sure you're invited to that as it may give you an opportunity to meet some of the active community members, @SidAlmoħadMuwaħħid. How's that? I see that you've already attracted some community interest on il-Pjazza! Please consider yourself one of us, we're all learners here.  :-) -- ToniSant (talk) 10:01, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ToniSant Ow wow that's wonderful :D Thanks so much for that! - SidAlmoħadMuwaħħid (talk) 10:33, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
