The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow![edit]

Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck! Admin question[edit]

Hey. I was wondering what your view was on protecting Danys Baez. I was going to do it myself, but I've already reverted out several WP:CRYSTAL violations in reference to his impending deal with the Phillies. I don't know what "the rules" say about me being the protecting admin in that case. KV5 (TalkPhils) 22:01, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That's what I figured, which is why I didn't do it. Even the Phillies site says it's not official. Thanks. KV5 (TalkPhils) 22:13, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I knew that; they are all just subdomains using a single engine that's generated by Sun Microsystems. The teams maintain their subdomains individually to publish press releases and such. KV5 (TalkPhils) 22:29, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As long as it's linked (which it is), I think that article is short enough that people can click in and click back without any issue. As to completeness: Color needs a key, and I think that there should be a bluish shade for the NL so it doesn't look like we're showing favoritism to one league. Do you want me to copy-edit the lead before you nom it? I think more images would be great too; I'm sure that there are more team images of winners with presidents and such, and I know there's an image in the 2009 WS article of the Yankees' on-field celebration after Game 6 this year. In the "appearances by franchise" table, the "AL/NL" doesn't need to be small, but it does need a footnote explaining the league switch (there is one, with a ref, in one of my FLs somewhere). KV5 (TalkPhils) 22:44, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Copyedit of the lead done; noticed that a lot of the footnotes in the table are spaced. No spaces! No spaces! Haha... KV5 (TalkPhils) 23:16, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

World Series winners[edit]

Hi, and happy new year. Let me explain my reversions, because I don't think there's any inherent conflict in aims. (1) The reason my colors were so subdued was an attempt to appease KV5 (Killer Vogel) who wanted no color at all (partly, I think, through a misreading of Wikipedia:Accessibility). Originally I'd used the color scheme I've used for World Series and Major League Baseball, based on the traditional red for American League and blue for NL, with variations for the expansion teams (bgcolor=pink or lightblue for the original 16; ffbbdd or aaccff for the expansion teams). But see Talk:List of World Series winners for Killer's objections. (2) Those pictures cover up the table on my browser, so they had to be adjusted somehow. I was able to re-expand them somewhat in an uncompleted edit: see what this code does for you. —— Shakescene (talk) 00:51, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:2004 WorldSeries Trophy.jpg
The Commissioner's Trophy from the Boston Red Sox's 2004 World Series win.
Several men of varying ages wearing suits clap as a man in the center of the photo smiles holding up a white baseball jersey which reads "OBAMA 44" on the back.
The 2008 World Series winning Philadelphia Phillies met with President Barack Obama, continuing a tradition of World Series winning team visiting the White House.
Two rows of men in suits, one holding a large trophy, stand while a smiling man stands in front of them holding a white baseball jersey which reads "BUSH 07" on the back.
The 2007 Boston Red Sox with President George W. Bush.
Now I've seen your exchange with Killer, let me say that I had also proposed your preferred solution, especially when the National League column went all the way back to 1876 with other challengers (like the AA). The added advantage is that one could see and sort the record of (say) the Phillies or a single-league manager like Connie Mack in one column that included both winning and losing years. The difficulty seemed to be how to highlight the winners in a way that satisfied the WP:Manual of Style (which is far more important to Killer since he wants to make this a WP:Featured List, than to me, who's spent far too much time on Talk:MOS) and Accessibility to different systems and pairs of eyes, which is important to me. Talk:List of World Series champions#another format shows one suggested approach of mine, which was not completely successful and was not accepted by the other editors. —— Shakescene (talk) 01:11, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've replied to your latest on my own talk page. (I don't mind where to exchange thoughts so long as it's on a single page.) —— Shakescene (talk) 01:29, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter Issue XLVI (December 2009)
From the coordinators
Happy New Year to all! I shall take this opportunity to reflect upon the past year. In 2009 our project grew impressively, adding nearly 100 new featured articles and doubling the total number of featured lists. Elisha Cuthbert[edit]

The article Elisha Cuthbert, to which you seem to be one of the primarily contributors, is undergoing a review as part of the good article sweeps project. The article does not seem to meet current requirements for a good article. It has been put on hold for a week; if these issues are addressed satisfactorily within that period the article will be kept as a GA, otherwise it will be delisted. Re:2009 World Series[edit]

Isn't this a bit soon? Have they even got their rings yet?

Anyways just a few thing I noticed from scanning the article.

  • The logo is probably not going to be allowed
  • A lot of still in the lead seems a little trivial
  • In the "Route to the series" section, might be worth mentioning the fact the Yankees had a new Stadium.
  • Not sure you really more than one image per game.
  • I see a few paragraphs with no refs.
  • refs #4, 96, 104 and 105 not dated.

Might give this I proper look when I have the time. BUC (talk) 18:59, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your FS nom[edit]

The source you used for your FS nom has a bit of distortion when Bush speaks, maybe from compression or gain levels too high. I found another source that sounds a bit better [1]. Maybe you'd like to clean that one up? Jujutacular T · C 01:06, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yea, I hear that pop at 1:20ish. Sure, I'll take a shot at removing it. Jujutacular T · C 01:21, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I worked for a while, but I couldn't get it quite like I wanted it. The right solution will probably involve a low or band pass filter. I haven't worked too much with audio restoration, but the trick is figuring out over what frequency range the noise is, then filtering that out. I may try some more in the coming week. I'm done looking at managers for a while[edit]

It's done. Next topic swing is underway. KV5 (TalkPhils) 14:26, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just popping in here, what might the next topic swing be? I may or may not help as I want to develop some NFL lists, but there's a possibility. Mm40 (talk) 16:44, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like the managers and the first-round draft picks are the next on tap. The linked article above is at FLC already. As an aside, Stax, if the FTC doesn't pass, do you want to take the AL pennant winners and I'll take the NL? I'm going to merge the pennant winners list from the NLCS into the NL list from whatever years to make a complete list if we absolutely have to do this, but I think the expectation of creating an article for each trophy is unreasonable. KV5 (TalkPhils) 16:54, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I definitely think the NL pennant winners belong together regardless of if they're in this FT, but yeah that sounds fine. Staxringold talkcontribs 17:01, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree with you there. FWIW, I reviewed your DYK hook; you could return the favor on the MLB managers list if you like. :-D KV5 (TalkPhils) 18:20, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • My man! Good work. My review first. KV5 (TalkPhils) 17:43, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I did it as fast as I could, and the merge and nomination of the List of NL pennant winners is complete. Here's the nom. Cheers! KV5 (TalkPhils) 00:43, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I did leave a note on the FTC page, and I'll give a shout at any of the FL regulars there. I'm gonna try and get as many reviews as soon as possible so maybe that can get cleared in the 10-day minimum (doubtful, but possible if there's sufficient consensus). WikiCup 2010 January newsletter[edit]

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to Isle of Man Fetchcomms (submissions)- his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.

Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! Featured picture[edit]

Stax, obviously you know more about this than I do. I feel that this image that I just cropped from a larger PD source has great potential as a featured picture. Unfortunately, I know nothing about the FP process, and I don't know which imperfections in the picture would need to be corrected. I was hoping you might be able to offer me a little direction or guidance. I have Photoshop CS4 at work and CS at home, so I have the tools. I'm just not sure how to go forward from here. Since you've been involved with a lot of FPCs, I figured you might be able to offer me some guidance. Thanks. KV5 (TalkPhils) 17:30, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A couple of questions are when and where it was taken. It says 1911. That's possible, though not definitive. Alex was with the Phillies 1911-17, and the uniform did not change much during that stretch. Home uniforms and caps were white, road uniforms and caps were gray, both with a red P on the cap, with the road shirt featuring a red P all those years and the home all but one. And Okkonen's book doesn't indicate anything about the sweater. So we kinda have to go by the photo source. As to where, it looks a little like Baker Bowl's bleachers, but not quite. Assuming it's a National League park, the other 7 possibilities are: Boston (no), Brooklyn (maybe), Chicago (no), Cincinnati (no), New York (no), Pittsburgh (no), St. Louis (no). Oddly enough, it also looks a little like Cleveland. Then there's the fact he's holding a bat, which is an unusual pose for a pitcher. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 19:59, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think he's got it as PD-self at present, and I suspect that's not correct, even if it's his altered version of it. But I don't know for sure. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 22:38, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter Issue XLVII (January 2010)
From the coordinators
  • It's only a month into the New Year, and we've already made changes to the project's infrastructure, merging and improving several task forces (see below). Much content within the project's scope has also been improved: eleven new featured articles, two featured lists, two featured pictures, a featured sound, and seventeen A-class articles. Thanks and congratulations to all editors who contributed and/or nominated these items.
  • In other news, the elections for new project coordinators are coming up in March. Think about whether you would like to run or not, and self-nominations will be coming up at the beginning of next month.
  • Lastly, our project's A-class review process is desperately in need of new reviewers. Please consider looking at least one and leaving comments, no matter how small or trivial. It will be greatly appreciated by the article's nominator(s).

Looks like we might have a "featured list of the day" on the Main Page! Dabomb87 just promoted the list of NL pennant winners, which is (still) in the queue for DYK. Fun. KV5 (TalkPhils) 23:39, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for List of American League pennant winners[edit]

Updated DYK query On February 7, 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article List of American League pennant winners, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check ) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

When you get some time could you swing back by the List of Medal of Honor recipients for the Boxer Rebellion and see if I answered your question. --Kumioko (talk) 06:09, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Stax, can you revisit the above FLC? Thanks, Dabomb87 (talk) 01:33, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Accident[edit]

Hi! You just removed my DYK nom in accident. Since it's the nominator's responsibility not to remove noms, though, I just rolled you back and you will have to nominate the baseball list again. Thanks, Geschichte (talk) 22:53, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I know it was in accident! Happy editing, Geschichte (talk) 22:58, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dodgers FLC[edit]

See my comment at WT:FLC. Sorry for any confusion and frustration I may have caused you. The inconsistencies in closures you cited stem from procedural issues (my inability to close those two because of my involvement as a reviewer in those FLCs). Dabomb87 (talk) 02:27, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I know, but as a director there's not much I can do (I try to review several a week myself), short of actively recruiting reviewers (which I simply don't have time to do) or putting nomination limits (which I don't want to do). Sigh. Thanks anyway for your understanding and your contributions to FLC. Dabomb87 (talk) 03:00, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comments on this FLC. With the recent crack down on stale FLCs, I would appreciate it if you could check in on this one and let me know if all your concerns have been addressed. Thank you.—NMajdantalk 15:46, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jerry Grote[edit]

I brought up a debate converning Jerry Grote and the Colt 45s at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Baseball. I'd like your input on the topic.--Johnny Spasm (talk) 00:15, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
