I am a person who works with Honduran Indians and Garifunas, an Afro-Honduran group. After Leigh Thelmadatter gave a talk at SALALM's conference in Miami in May 2013, I organized a Honduran Indian and Garifuna new technology project. Wikipedia is one of the new technologies we are introducing, but it is definately not the only one. I am running into a lot of problems with including information on Honduran Indians and Garifunas in Wikipedia even though I have 6 books published in Spanish on paper,and one in English published on the Internet and 300 newspaper articles of a newspaper that is nolonger available on the Internet since May 2013, not a lot is published, and what is published is original research, and so I can not figure out how to include the information, even if I wrote the book and if the Garifunas and the Indians are willing for it to be on the Internet. (We are currently reviewing Intellectual Property right issues to get to informed consent. Please contact me to talk about these kinds of issues. My email is grif.wendy@gmail.com I am very interested in the African roots of Afro-Hondurans. The Miskito Indians who are traditionally called Zambos, and who have a subgroup called Sambul in Miskito, suggested that maybe Zambos means they came from Zambia, which would obviously mean in Portuguese or in Spanish, the land of the Zambos. The ecological zone where the sambul live in Honduras is in fact low lying ground which seasonally floods, known as llanos in Honduran Spanish (this usually refers to plains in English) an eco-system which is an important aspect of Zambia according to the Wikipedia article. In Honduras, I have found crafts also native to Botswana. I have not run into anything that I found related to Namibia yet, but there are things related to Congo, Angola, Rwanda/Burundia area, the use of the South African word "pap" for corn meal dishes in Black Bay islander dishes, so it might be a case of not having identified something yet. the main linguistic origin of African words in Honduras seems to be Bantu,but it might also be a sampling issue,that we do not know what the other languages are or the crafts are or the foods are. The Wikipedia articles in English on African foods are very very exciting to me. I have done a whole article on the African origins of Afro-Honduran foods in Spanish based on Wikipedia in English articles, which the Honduran Afro-Hondurans find very interesting. Together with a researcher on Afro-Argentinians we are talking about organizing Afro-Latin Americans to participate in reading and editing Wikipedia pages, and they will find the African Traditional Knowledge articles and general African articles extremely helpful.
