Regarding this note, I just wanted to let you know that I fucking HATE the whole admin-coaching thing, and am much more willing to oppose when it's involved, but after looking at Mac's coaching page, I thought, maybe I should drop Kurt a note asking his opinion of it (since it's more hypothetical questions and situations rather than an exercise in gaming a request for adminship). Only later did I realize that you also noted the same thing in you initial nomination, but thought better of it and removed. Well, that's about it... nothing to see here. Hi there :), I have been looking for an admin coach for a while now and I just noticed that your student is now in RfA and I was wondering if now that your student is in the RfA stage you would consider taking me on as a student and being my admin coach after your current student's RfA is over :)? Hi. I seek your help. User:Una Smith is being disruptive at this FAC. She even renamed the FA Scouting, which is linked to about 10,000 times, with no discussion (it got moved back). The biggest problems are that she is editing several BSA related articles and, honestly, she doesn't know what she's talking about. She's gone beyond FAC reviewer to arguing over content as an article contributor-some would call that a COI. I'd even had to say she's in WP:REDFLAG zone. Her replies at FAC last night were out of line IMHO. I was wondering if you, as a respected FAC reviewer could offer advice on this situation and/or help improve the article. Thank you. RlevseTalk 10:33, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know you specialize in politicians, but could you give this a quick copyedit for better prose? Tks. RlevseTalk 13:32, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Houphouët-Boigny

He's certainly on my agenda for some indeterminate point in the future, though I can also put the article on more of a priority footing. Either way, it may be a good idea to first ask User:Editorofthewiki if he's given up before either of us takes over. Biruitorul Talk 05:46, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

welcome to the 2000 primary group.

You were one of three other editors that encouraged me to re-write the 2000 Primaries section of the George W. Bush article after I commented that it was a disjointed section about Rove, church, polls and that a more historical and factual summary would be better. So far, there has been no opposition.

If we have a "2000 Primary Group" of us four, perhaps we could propose certain ideas to get a feel of how acceptable they might be to the Wikipedia community? It would just be like first discussing things among friends informally, with no binding decisions, just discussion among rational people (rational, judging from the 2000 Primaries discussion.).

The new question is that there is a "cultural and political image" section in several politicians articles. Some of these are better written than others. However, there's a philosophical problem that hasn't really been addressed much or at all.

viewpoint A:
Should there be such a section at all? After all, it's just someone's opinion but that they have written it as a political commentator for a major news source (so it become sort of "reliable source" in Wikipedia terminology). Is it in the George W. Bush article? No. (retort could be "other crap exists").

If it is there, should all the major cultural and political images be reported, at least the most widely reported ones? (for example, Gerald Ford's image of being clumsy was very widely commented on). If not, isn't this subtle POV?

viewpoint B:
Or should an encyclopedia have none of this subjective rubbish and only facts?

From a practical standpoint, viewpoint B is less contentious because there would be no debate to what is included after it's decided not to have it. On the other hand, viewpoint A would report on commonly reported images (opinions) of the person which does have some historical and biographical value.

Let me know what you think? Chergles (talk) 15:10, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Clerk tips

After you familiarize yourself with the case, mainly just keep an eye on it. While more tolerance is allowed for civiliity during arb cases, you can't let it get too far. Keep an eye out for privacy and BLP issues too. You also need to answer questions people have or concerns they bring up, which may or may not be asked directly to you. Sometimes we have to block for disruption too. If you have any questions, ask a clerk me or if I'm not around, another clerk or arb as appropriate. Above all else, maintain your neutrality and integrity. RlevseTalk 11:40, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nikshid and Editor. Sorry for having been of little use as a translator, but as a non-native, translating from French to English is to me especially hard. On the other side, I've got at least a couple of good English sources on Houphouet-Boigny: Robert Mundt's article "Cote d'Ivoire: continuity and change in a semi-democracy" (contained in Political Reform in Francophone Africa, regarding mostly the evolution of Francophone Africa in the early 1990s but treating all the countries' political histories) and Houphouet's biography in An African Biographical Dictionary by Norbert Brockman. The biggest problem with the sources is represented by the quite heavy use of a highly partisan and polemic source, i. e. Gbagbo's 1984 monograph, a historically very important work as a manifesto of the opposition but hardly a reliable source. Little relevance is given to the 1980, which Mundt places with 1963 and 1990 as one of the three key dates in the evolution of the regime. Well these were a few thoughts on reading the article. Ciao, Aldux (talk) 16:26, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request Suggestions

I looked you up from Wikiproject India, in which I have enlisted myself. I have been spending some time bringing this article up to par and I have done a lot of work today. Would you take a look into the article and suggest the ways in which it can be expanded (I have a list of mathematical, medical, and engineering related innovations but am really lacking in the machines, astronomy, physics etc. fields) and made better? I want to bring it up to the level of this article and then work on the Science and technology in ancient India (rename it 'History of science and technology in India') article and then perhaps add a section like this one in the India article.

Thanks in advance,South Block (talk) 09:07, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. The list can certainly do with some details; I'll try to provide a background for each bullet point. The reason why I was more direct and went ahead and contacted users on the talk page is that I don't want to see 'Hindutva-vadis' going about adding stuff to project 'the miracle that was India'. Academic scholarship and earthly point of views (not Frawley's chariots) ought to do. Please stay with the article, and if you find time, keep advancing your suggestions as the article is expanded. Tunisia flag

Some things I have noticed. I do not doubt the construction sheet given for the flag, but I am having a very hard time trying to say where in the law is the exact color shade of the flag. My French isn't great, but I didn't see anything from the laws. For the variant section, I suggest adding the President's color, which can be seen at Image:Tunisie President Ben Ali.jpg. The flag is mentioned in the Article 4 law, so you can easily write about it. Still haven't found the book yet by Dr. Smith. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 05:34, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mischief makers

Since Moreschi is on vacation, I'm also copying here. I'm at the end of my tether. Wikipedia can't let Bharatveer (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), now joined by SPAs, hold up productive work on pages Michael Atiyah and Kerala School. They have tried to create new pages Raju-Atiyah case (AfD'd speedily), start various discussions here and there to keep a bogus issue alive. I resent that I, as a knowledgeable editor in the field have to waste so much of my time in engaging mischief-makers, who in real-life I would never have time for. Azerbaijani violinist

With all due respect, but the name of the category "Azerbaijani violinists" is misleading. What does the term "Azerbaijani" mean?

  • Someone, who has an Azerbaijani citizenship? Well, Asriyan does not have an Azerbaijani citizenship.
  • Azerbaijani = born in Azerbaijan? Then why don't we call it "Violinists born in Azerbaijan"? I offered this option at the very beginning[4].
  • Azerbaijani = being ethnically an Azerbaijani Turk? Then how come Asriyan appears there?

I would suggest renaming the category to something more appropriate. Also, please be advised that many ethnic minorities (most of whom, are actually the natives of the lands that currently are included in Azerbaijan), are against them being called "Azerbaijanis" because they feel that "Azerification" is the continuation of the same policy of forced assimilation that has been in use since the creation of the first Azerbaijani state back in 1918. Atiyah

Hi Nishkid64. Thanks for your comments on the living bio noticeboard. I understand your criticism about lack of mainstream media attention. My question, already raised on the RS noticeboard, is that (1) if you look through the talk page, no one had disputed the facts; that Atiyah was informed of Raju's work and yet approved the publication of an article claiming credit for an idea that he himself judged to be very promising. (2) there is a strongly worded petition signed by 35 very eminent academics that clearly supports Raju's allegations of academic misconduct.

The logic behind using mainstream media as an RS is that an editor or a journalist puts his/her reputation on the line. Here, 35 academics including Ashis Nandy, Vandana Shiva, Sumit Sarkar, Tanika Sarkar, Harish Trivedi, MGK Menon and others have stated that there seems a prima facie case of misconduct. To my mind this is far more reliable than a mainstream media source. However, perhaps Wikipedia's policies are the opposite and only a mainstream media source is acceptable, not a petition signed by eminent academics.

I have repeatedly asked this question on the talk page and not received an answer. I did receive an answer on the RS notice board but that was based on a misreading of my original post.

Perhaps you have an answer to this question. Is it only the mainstream media that is reliable? Or does a petition with signatories far more eminent that you are likely to find in a typical newspaper also acceptable? thanks,

P.S: If you have an answer to this question I would appreciate if you would post it on the RS notice board where I have raised this question. While I am grateful for your friendly advice, I am a bit disinclined towards long bilateral conversations here, on my talk page or on yours. thanks again Perusnarpk (talk) 13:59, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

POV in Indian articles

Hi there is an IP address probably from India which is wreaking havoc with some of the Bollywood articles. See his contributions. He persistently keeps adding POV to an article or glorifying an actor or film further than they or it actually is. It is a major nuisance for the editors on here who work on Indian cinema articles to have to keep reverting him day in day out just to maintain some sense of article neutrality. He has been warned many times and his persistence has resulted in edit conflicts on more than just a few articles. Could you please warn and/or block him and try to make him aware of wikipedias neutrality and why his edits which are intent on putting POV or glorifying the subject of the article unnecesarily may be construed as against policy and therefore vandalism. Its doing my nut it keeping track of him. User:Shshshsh (Shahid) raised my awarenss of it initially and other editors such as totalfilmi99 have to keep reverting him e.g here. Should he be blocked do you think? This is an exmaple of the kind of crap he keeps putting in articles ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:02, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Timeline of Félix Houphouët-Boigny

Yo Nishkid. Just thought you want to know I've created Timeline of Félix Houphouët-Boigny, similar to other personal timelines (Timeline of Jane Austen, Timeline of Mary Wollstonecraft, etc.) It's really a mess right now, but I think we can take this to FL. --I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 18:45, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind, please delete that page. It would be redundant anyway. --I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 19:06, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't care, the article currently isn't ready for FAC, it still needs a peer review, but GAN is the first step. Perhaps we should bypass GAN on Leon Mba, then? --I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 21:15, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi could you fix the WP:Translation thing at the top please as with Félix Houphouët-Boigny ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:21, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks its a pretty impressive looking article isn't it! Exactly what we need rather than the one line stubs that dominate much of central america at present ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:34, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

translation

I'm looking for someone to translate about three sentences of French for me. I see a place to request an article be translated, but not just a snippet, so I hope you can help. I get the gist of the first sentence, but the rest defies me. - Outerlimits (talk) 02:20, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thank you, that helps very much. (Though I still can't tell if it's true, at least I know what was alleged :) ! - Outerlimits (talk) 01:54, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

For protecting the Phir Hera Pheri article. Frankly I don't have that strong feelings about the article and the film itself (which I honestly did not like), it's just that emphasis, POV and attempts to defame something make me angry. Apart from that I'm extremely busy these days so it's difficult to follow things consistently. I think we will be able to solve the problem later with a talk page discussion. Thanks again, ShahidTalk2me 15:33, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
