Swami Vivekananda

Can you check Swami Vivekananda? We have been working in this article for last 18 months or so. The last requisite is requesting a native English speaker to have a look (see User_talk:Crisco_1492#Swami_Vivekananda). Can you have a look at the article nad make necessary changes if possible? There is no hurry, but, we are attempting to make it a featured article this year i.e. 150th birthday of Vivekananda. --TitoDutta 09:30, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

I'll look at it as soon as possible. All the best, Miniapolis 17:33, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
And looking at the FAC discussion, I'll copyedit it only if the copyvio issues have already been resolved; I don't want to make a bad situation worse. All the best, Miniapolis 17:37, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
Yes, it was resolved. --TitoDutta 05:05, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi! Miniapolis! I'm working on a list and planning to take it to flc. It's has only one paragraph of prose. A good copy edit will be helpful. Please, look at it once.—Prashant 04:20, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Would you.please take a look at my List. It would be helpful, if you could look.—Prashant 07:09, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

I don't have time now, since I'm busy with the GOCE July copyediting drive. I suggest that you put it on the requests page, since that's part of the drive. Please note the top of my talk page. All the best, Miniapolis 12:52, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Thanks very much for the copyediting you're doing on the Crass article.  Yinta 10:04, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Glad to help; I should be done in the next day or so. All the best, Miniapolis 12:49, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Paraphrasing correctly

I was wondering if you could mentor me on paraphrasing articles in a formal manner. My request is because of Template:Did you know nominations/Spirit Touches Ground. SL93 (talk) 18:48, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

There's a very useful essay on close paraphrasing (which I think they're talking about in the DYK nom) that explains it much better than I could. Try not to get annoyed when people use words you don't understand; I have to look words up all the time. There are a lot of words in English, and it's satisfying to be able to use just the right one to express what you're trying to say. Part of the problem may be the differing heights of the "bars" for GA and main-page stuff like FA and DYK. That for GA is, in my view, too low and editors who have successfully nominated GAs are disconcerted by the additional scrutiny given FA, DYK and other main-page content (since it's the face WP shows the world, the main page has to be as close to perfect as possible). Hope this helps. All the best, Miniapolis 21:34, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Mentoring request

Hi, Miniapolis. My name is Ishdarian and I've been on Wikipedia for 6 years. I've never been a content editor and I really want to change that. Dennis Brown directed me to the GoCE and I saw your name listed on the GoCE mentorship program. If you have the time, would you be willing to take me under your wing and help me develop some content writing skills? Ishdarian 20:33, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Ishdarian, and I hope you come to enjoy copyediting as much as I do (I find it oddly relaxing :-)). The GOCE home page has a wealth of blue tabs on the top which tell you everything you could possibly want to know; I suggest starting with "How to copy edit" and checking out the advice for newcomers (don't forget to add your name to the mailing list). If you click on "Drives" and then "Current drive", you'll find...well, our backlog-reduction drive (we have them every other month), which runs until the end of the month. It's not too late to sign up if you want. When you're ready to copyedit an article, you can find one by clicking on a month under "Wikipedia articles needing copy edit". That'll bring up a category page, from which you can choose an article that suits you; when you do, if you remove the {{copyedit}} tag before you start it'll help avoid conflicts with other copyeditors (it's rare, but sometimes happens). It's also a good idea not to tackle articles on the requests page until you've done a few of the backlog articles first. Many request articles are up for good-article or featured-article promotion; the reviewers go over them (especially the FACs) with a fine-tooth comb—as they should—and there's a fair amount of pressure on the copyeditor. Hope this helps for starters, and holler if you have any questions. See you around and all the best, Miniapolis 02:38, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Pie delivery!

Thanks for the copyedit on How a Mosquito Operates! You deserve some pie—lemon meringue, the best pie there is! Curly Turkey (gobble) 01:33, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

GOCE July 2013 news report

Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
  • Participation: Out of 30 people who have signed up for this drive so far, 18 have participated. If you have signed up for the drive but have not yet participated, it isn't too late. If you haven't signed up for the drive, sign up now!
  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.

– Your drive coordinators: Torchiest, Baffle gab1978, Jonesey95, and The Utahraptor.

Resubmit request

Hi Miniapolis,

My article was deleted and the post explained that if I wanted to resubmit it, I must first contact you.

Though this is my first attempt at Wiki, I am confident that I can submit a draft that will meet all of Wiki's guidelines and ultimately be accepted by you for publishing.

Thank you in advance for your courteous cooperation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hollywood Films International (talk • contribs) 14:13, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Hollywood. It's not a question of "submit[ting] a draft that will meet all of Wiki's guidelines". What you want to do (publicize the article's subject) is contrary to Wikipedia's five pillars; Wikipedia is not a means of promotion, and you have an obvious conflict of interest with the article's subject. I advise you to stop trying to create promotional, autobiographical articles, or you will probably be blocked from editing the encyclopedia altogether. IMDb is not considered a reliable source for Wikipedia articles because of its lack of editorial oversight; in addition, it is copyrighted (which is why your first submission was blanked and speedily deleted). When the article's subject is notable enough, someone will write an article about them. I hope this helps. Good luck and all the best, Miniapolis 17:03, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Complex of Lutsk Orthodox Fellowship may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry, just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Requested Articles

Hi! I am trying to reinvigorate Wikipedia:WikiProject Requested Articles, which, if I get enough pointers that there is some interest, I will re-design, with a design similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors, involving drives, to decrease the number of articles listed in the various subpages, and blue link blitzes, involving editors removing all created pages. I am planning, with sufficient interest, to make requested articles 'stricter', i.e. you have to provide two reliable sources, and write a short note explaining why the requested article is notable. There would be a reward system, involving adapted barnstars, similar to the Guild of Copy Editors have here and here. If you have any questions about my aim, or want to indicate that you would sign up to the WikiProject, please say so on my talk page. Thanks! Matty.007 16:34, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!
