Request for usurpation[edit]

I object to usurpation. This account was created in 2006, and I am "mfb" on Twitter, Github and numerous other sites. Mfb (talk) 06:20, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You will lose the username - it is just a matter of time, and you did not seem to use this account. Okay, then I'll have to wait until the SUL finalization does the usurpation. --mfb (talk) 15:14, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Is it really policy that it's just a matter of time for usernames to be "usurped"? I'm not clear what SUL finalization means. I have always done almost all my wikipedia editing while logged out; I did not realize it could cause me to lose my username due to inactivity. --Mfb (usurped) (talk) 01:45, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wikimedia tries to unify the logins across all wikis, see Help:Unified login (SUL=Single-user login). While there are global accounts now, there are still hundreds of thousands of username conflicts - local accounts in different wikis with the same username belonging to different users. It is planned to resolve all those conflicts. Some years ago, when the global accounts were introduced, the user with the most edits (or with special rights, not relevant here) got the global account with this nickname. That's me (I now have 11,000 edits in the German wikipedia, don't know how many I had back then). To finish this unification, it is planned to rename all remaining conflicting local accounts at some point, probably within this year, this is called SUL finalisation. It could be the reason why MBisanz renamed us even with your objection. THe link probably sends him a note about this discussion. --mfb (talk) 09:42, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I missed the part on his user discussion page. --mfb (talk) 12:28, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
