2022

Greetings

I see that in 2021 you did less editing than in any other year since 2008. It's sad in a way to see you fading out of the project, but I suppose nobody can go on forever. Thanks for all the good work you have done, and have a good 2022. JBW (talk) 10:41, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

@JBW:. Thanks, and the same to you. Doing admin stuff, you get to see the worst of the project almost every day, and I had had enough of that a couple of years ago. I just stayed on to help with the early Covid-19 disruption. These days, all I expect to do is the occasional gnome edit when I'm reading articles. And maybe engage in unfinished business where I've previously been involved, if I happen to see it. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 12:38, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

DYK and the Main Page in general

Oh yes, there is definitely the wider problem! How to solve that is a harder question. But a "one offender at a time" approach might help us get there. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 15:29, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

I was wondering if you could suggest where I should take this. I think the problem is much bigger than just a user or three. Qwirkle (talk) 00:02, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

@Qwirkle: No idea really, sorry. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:46, 13 January 2022 (UTC)l

Happy new year, in friendship! - I enjoyed meetings with friends in real life, and wish you many of those. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:52, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: Thanks Gerda, same to you. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 15:15, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks you! 2022 began happily with vacation. I uploaded images but stopped at 22 January - click on songs. 30 January means 10 years of Precious. It's also the birthday of a friend, - I'm so happy I mentioned his DYK on his 90th birthday when he was still alive. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:08, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

Less trouble for the equivalent German, surprise. I nominated a pic that I took in 2009 on 2 Feb, and it was on the German MP yesterday, with the song from 1885, in English Prayer for Ukraine. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:43, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello!

Hi, Boing!,

I thought you had basically retired but then you were so active in an ANI discussion with your alternative account that I wondered if you were considering returning. Or maybe that discussion just hit a nerve. Just wanted to say that I missed seeing you around the project. Take care! Liz Read! Talk! 02:35, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Liz, thanks for the kind words. My reply to JBW in the "Greetings" section above is probably the best answer I can give. In that ANI thing, I was just particularly annoyed by the way Melcous was initially treated, when she's been trying to address a genuine long-term problem and had been getting no help through the proper channels. It reminded me of other cases of long-term policy abuse, where the whistleblowers were initially treated like dirt because the offenders were prolific contributors. Proof that all Canadians know all other Canadians

If you want to take your mind off the worst of Wikipedia, here's an article where editors turned up a whole load of academic book reviews that could be used to turn a list into actual prose. Possibly as far from wars and conflicts of interest as one can get, unless you went for furniture. But I'm saving the furniture for Drmies.

Uncle G (talk) 19:07, 13 March 2022 (UTC)

  • Wasn't there a conspiracy theory about a furniture company being involved in child trafficking? Too rich for my blood! Boing! on Tour (talk) 07:24, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
    • I have a nice 18th century furniture maker ready for when Drmies needs xem. I know that Drmies is looking forward to it after the last batch of furniture articles. Uncle G (talk) 08:05, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

Autoblocked because your IP address was recently used by "Uggdf". The reason given for Uggdf's block is: "Per ANI". Please see Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#User:Uggdf, where I explain that I used Uggdf's published password in order to scramble it for safety. It seems I then got caught by their subsequent block.

Accept reason: A likely story! Anyway, I hope I managed to clear the autoblock. I don't do this very often. Please see if you can edit, Boing. Bishonen | tålk 15:27, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

  • All good, thanks. (Walks away cackling... hehe, they fell for it...) Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 15:54, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
oops. That's weird. Sorry for the inconvenience, Boing! And then I was offline and didn't see this. Thanks Bish! Star Mississippi 20:39, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
@Star Mississippi: Oh, no worries. Is this a good moment for a confession? In my admin days I did something similar with another compromised account, and autoblocked myself! Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 20:50, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
hah! Can picture you wagging a finger in the mirror. Glad to provide some entertainment for the day. Star Mississippi 21:29, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

Nice...

... to see you around again. When I was new here, I always looked up to you as a voice of reason and good judgment. I hope we'll continue to benefit from that. Girth Summit (blether) 20:34, 12 March 2022 (UTC)

@Girth Summit: Thanks, that's very kind of you. But no, I'm not planning to spend much time here - I've just been stuck at home in Covid isolation over the past week or so, with more time in front of the computer than is healthy. Boing! on Tour (talk) 20:39, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
Fair enough, do what's right for you of course. Hope the isolation is over for you soon. Girth Summit (blether) 20:58, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
Yes, last day today, thanks. Boing! on Tour (talk) 21:56, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
April songs

You could spend time at a computer looking at images, of dance and singing, peace doves and icecream - or listening: Freiheit! Beethoven's way, - the livestream has it all, safety announcement, speeches, intermission ... but there's a good legend to find the symphony movement. (or not, - Bish asked for it) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:44, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

You need to come back

...as an admin. You are missed, dammit. Atsme 💬 📧 23:11, 22 May 2022 (UTC)

Sure Atsme, as an admin he was one of the best and he is indeed sorely missed, but he has extremely good reasons for not wanting the tools and the responsibility. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 23:29, 22 May 2022 (UTC)
We are losing too many good admins, Kudz. Atsme 💬 📧 00:24, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
@Atsme:, I agree. What Arbcom doesn't do, the voluntary de-admining does the rest; but who would want to be an admin with the thin ice they walk on nowadays? With Damocles' Sword hanging over those who are prepared to work at the coal face, or smoke out UPE and COI, it's hardly surprising that there are so few takers for the job, not to mention the toxic RfA system that needs to be completely redrawn. An admin can't say 'Boo' to a goose these days without risking sanctions. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:34, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the kind words, folks. But no, I'm only popping in here occasionally when I have nothing else to do, and I was here this weekend thanks to the Royal Mail. I broke a saw blade I needed for a job this weekend, so I ordered a new one due Friday by 24h delivery. There are two delivery offices near me, both about 3 miles away, and the RM sent it to the wrong one. The wrong one can't deliver it to me, so it had to be sent to the right one. But they can't send it to the right one directly, with only about 3 miles between them. No, it had to wait there all day Friday and then go 20 miles back to the main Mail Centre Saturday, where it has remained since (and according to the tracking, it apparently arrived there Saturday and then arrived there again Sunday). They'll probably try to deliver it today when I'm planning to be out. Anyway, I'm getting far more constructive stuff done in my life now I'm not spending any time doing admin here (at least when the Royal Mail allows). Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 06:29, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
Hmm... I see the UK, once the world's leading industrial and postal nation is now modelling its logistics on the Thai system. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 06:47, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
Actually, I must be fair - the RM's "hub and spoke" delivery system does work well when it works, with the timings mostly well coordinated. But it's one of those things where delays are compounded when something goes wrong - you have to wait until the next day to send something back a leg, then the next day to send it onwards again. Sounds more like the US mail - maybe Bezos can help train all of them. I've purchased stuff that was delivered the next morning. I'm trying to wrap my head around a saw you can't see. You need a seesaw. B) Atsme 💬 📧 22:29, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
It arrived Monday. Thankfully I can see my saw now :-) Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 05:47, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
I like my talk today (actually mostly from 29 May - I took the title pic), enjoy the music, two related videos worth watching! - If you have a few minutes, I'd like someone independent for the Cosima Wagner talk. Haven't seen "rotten idea" comments in years, and had hoped so much to never see them again. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:25, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

Some very undue stuff in Sub-Saharan Africa

Added by Daniel Power of God in one edit.[1] A huge chunk using just two people as sources, one of them 43 times. Maybe just trim heavily? Doug Weller talk 15:41, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

@Doug Weller: Hmm, a first skim read makes it look strongly POV, presented in Wikipedia's voice, with one-sided support. It also seems to be unduly prominent in the article. I haven't done a deep examination (and may not have the time or inclination to do so), but I certainly think you could justify removing it and opening a discussion on the talk page. Or, if you have the inclination, trim it heavily as you suggest and try to present it with more balance. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 16:12, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Any ideas as to who else might be interested? Otherwise I’m tempted just to dump it. Doug Weller talk 17:28, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Can't really think of anyone, sorry. But yes, I see nothing wrong with removing it, and whoever wants to add it needs to get a consensus for it. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 18:19, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

September music

September songs

The rose pic for someone "grumpy" was taken on 11 Sep 2021, and that day in 2022 was full of music, Tag des offenen Denkmals, not only singing in church and rehearsals for Verdi's Requiem, but two concerts at special places pictured, one a synagogue (pictured on its wall). Today three DYK: a piece we'll perform on Sunday, a violinist we heard in June playing the Berg Concerto (my brother played in the orchestra), and a Youth Orchestra shaped by a conductor who recently died. Almost too much of a good thing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:28, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
