Academia Secondary School is a secondary school in Windhoek, Namibia.
History[edit]
It was initially planned to be a commercial school but the trend towards differentiated education created the need for a mainstream academic school with commercial subjects. Subsequently, the idea for a commercial school was abandoned in favor of an academic school. Construction started during October 1973 on Erf501 Academia. According to the initial planning the school should have been finished within 18 months, no later than June 1975. However, Pioneerspark and Suiderhof Primary Schools had such an influx of students due to the extensions in the Academia and Olympia residential areas, that additional pre fabricated buildings had to be erected at these schools to house those students. After consultations with the then Directors of Education and Works, it was decided to move the standard 5 students. As a result, when the school opened on 22 January 1975, some buildings were finished, others half finished and some not even built at all. Construction workers remained on the terrain for another 16 months until May 1977 when the final building works were completed. This situation made it very difficult for the pioneers of Academia Secondary School, teachers, students and parents alike, but a time to which many think back fondly.
In 1975 the school opened with 227 students, 19 staff members and Mr P.J. Scholtz principal. In 2009 the school had 920 students, 36 staff members.
