Chen Jian is a Chinese diplomat born the February 2, 1942. Since August 21, 2001, he has served as Secretary General adjoint in the Department of the General Assembly Management & Conferences. He is also a member of the Cabinet of the Secretary General.
Diplomatic career[edit]
Jian was a memeber of the Chinese delegation to the United Nations from 1972 to 1977 before returning to the post from 1980 to 1984. From 1977 to 1980, Jian served as the attache to the Ministry of international conferences and foreign affairs.
Jian was appointed Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations in 1992, a position he held until 1994. Following his work in the United Nations, Jian was appointed Chinese Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1996. He returned to the roll of ambassador in 1998 to serve as the Chinese ambassador to Japan from 1998 to 2001.
