Safoora Zargar (born 1993) is an Indian student activist leader from Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, best known for her role in the Citizenship Amendment Act protests and 2020 Delhi riots . She is a M.Phill student of Jamia Millia Islamia and media coordinator of the Jamia Coordination Committee.[3][4][5]

Early life and education

Zargar was born in 1993 at her residence in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir. She went to Delhi in 1998 with her family, when her father posted in neighbouring Faridabad, part of National Capital Region (NCR). She graduated from Delhi University[6][7] and is pursuing M.Phil degree[1] in Sociology in Jamia Millia Islamia.[8]

Career

In the year 2020, she joined anti-CAA protests in Delhi. She was arrested by Delhi Police on April 13, with police claiming she was among those who organised an anti-CAA protest and road blockade under the Jafrabad Metro station in Delhi on February 22-23.[9][10]

Delhi police have said that the violence was a pre-meditated conspiracy and all arrests have been made based on scientific and forensic evidence.[11] Safoora is also charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).[12]

According to a report of The Hindu, "A high-powered committee headed by a Delhi High Court judge directed DG (Prisons) to ensure that adequate medical assistance is provided to Zargar". The report also states that she was arrested in connection with North East Delhi riots.[13]

Controversies

After the arrest of Safoora Zargar, several people on social media started sharing unrelated images and videos for defaming Safoora. She was 3 months pregnant at the time of her arrest. The most viral allegation which targeted her pregnancy alleged that she was pregnant by Hindus at Shaheen Bagh. The people shared a couple sex video claiming that Safoora was in the video, but the fact checking website Alt News, reveals that all the allegations made were fake and baseless. The video was taken from Pornhub and there was PornHub model Selena Banks in the video.[14]

Many other social media posts targeting Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) scholar and activist Safoora Zargar for her marital status and pregnancy were doing the rounds, with people claiming that she was unmarried and that her pregnancy was discovered when she was lodged in Tihar Jail. Within time, the allegation became baseless when The Quint fact checked all the allegations which were revealed to be fake. All the photos shared claiming to be Safoora was tampered.[15] The online campaigns indicated that she is a victim of Islamophobia and deep misogyny.[16] Delhi Police haven't taken any action against the online vilification campaigns and trolls yet.[17]

Personal life

Safoora is married to Saboor Ahmed Sirwal.[1]
