I-81 enters Virginia from Tennessee, where the Interstate continues southwest toward Knoxville via I-40. After crossing the state line, the highway effectively becomes the border between Washington County to the northwest and the independent city of Bristol to the southeast. |

Interstate 81 enters Bristol, Virginia from Tennessee and runs primarily along the mountains of western Virginia. For most of its length, I-81 parallels U.S. Route 11. I-81 runs concurrently with Interstate 77 in Wytheville, Virginia for about 10 mi in a notable example of a wrong-way concurrency: both I-81 south and I-77 north share the same roadbed there. Further north, the highway also runs concurrently with about 30 miles of Interstate 64. |

Interstate 81 (I-81) is an 855-mile-long (1,376 km) highway. In the U.S. state of Virginia, I-81 runs for 324.92 miles (522.91 km), making the portion in Virginia longer than any other state's portion. It is also the longest Interstate highway within the borders of Virginia. It stretches from the Tennessee state line near Bristol to the West Virginia state line near Winchester. It enters Virginia from Bristol, Tennessee, and leaves Virginia into Berkeley County, West Virginia.

The state has proposed to widen its entire portion of I-81 to a minimum of three or four lanes in each direction to accommodate increased truck traffic and to toll non-passenger vehicles. Some sections of the new widened highway may completely separate car and truck traffic.[2]
On January 8, 2019, Governor Ralph Northam and Republican lawmakers agreed to a plan to add tolls to I-81 in Virginia in order to fund improvements to I-81 and parallel routes that would reduce traffic jams. I-81 would have used all-electronic tolling, with toll gantries every 40 to 60 miles and a toll rate of 11 cents a mile for cars and 17 cents a mile for trucks; an annual pass would have been available for $30. Tolls would have been discounted during the overnight hours.[3] This plan faced opposition from business and trucking groups, fearing economic hardship. On January 31, 2019, lawmakers rejected the plan and decided to seek other funding sources.[4]
