Revision as of 03:13, 15 August 2017

NEW USERS AND IP EDITORS: If I have inadvertently reverted your good faith edits and warned you regarding vandalism or similar, please do not take offense. Leave me a note in a new section on this page and, upon review, I will revert my own edits and remove the warnings. This is preferable to you simply undoing my reverts, where I am less likely to recognize that you are undoing them in good faith.

DACA edits

The use of the term "undocumented" is a WP:EUPHEMISIM that gives the article a certain political slant. No one in the talk page has given any non political reason for using the term in place of the more accurate term "illegal", other then that it is a common phrase. Being common, does not override Wikipedia's rule of not using euphemisms.

IP block report?

Hi Home Lander,

I recently had an encounter with this IP myself. I know it's a shared, gov't IP, but time for a block report maybe? X4n6 (talk) 10:54, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello X4n6. I see your warning and conversation left above mine on their talk page. Since it's been several days since then, I've reverted their latest (again, unsourced) edit to Magenta and left them a level 3 warning. If they continue soon, then I think we can go level four and/or request a sysop to block. Thanks for messaging me. Home Lander (talk) 14:26, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Home Lander and X4n6: Hi, if necessary they can be reported to admins at this noticeboard. Happy editing. Kind regards ChocolateRabbit 17:20, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'm there all the time. I don't think they've edited enough within the last couple days to warrant a block, however. If they fire up again, then one can pull the trigger. Home Lander (talk) 18:05, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. Kind regards ChocolateRabbit 18:30, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed Home Lander. Just wanted to make you aware. And thanks, @ChocolateRabbit:. We're both aware of the protocol, I just thought since HL had the most recent encounter, any report should be theirs. Cheers. X4n6 (talk) 08:23, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@X4n6: Okay understood. Cheers Kind regards ChocolateRabbit 10:58, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Electric Boat Association

Point taken: the material was rather hastily obtained from the Association's own webpage and on reflection does not conform to wiki-rules and standards: I have requested a total rewrite of the page by a respected historian of all things electric and the author of a forthcoming book on the subject of electric boats and ships. (who is not a wikipedian) Is it OK if I replace the offending text with his? Obviously like any new page, this is just a starting point and no doubt the page will benefit from, and improve with, multiple edits and contributions, as per usual. Excalibur (talk) 16:25, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well the page shouldn't be started from the association's page - it should be written from scratch - and also if the writer has a Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, then it should probably be drafted and submitted instead. Home Lander (talk) 18:07, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In reponse to your request for page protection, I put the above article under full protection - none of the dissenting parties have so far contributed to the talk page discussion, where a previous consensus between Phoebe, Jose2495 and RightCowLeftCoast and a number of IP editors seems to indicate preference for the term "illegal alien". It is widely held that a change of previous consensus requires a new discussion, so this is a courtesy invitation to discuss. Regards, Samsara 12:39, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I actually had very little involvement other than observing new IP changes without explanation and initially reverting. Thanks for protecting the page. Home Lander (talk) 18:13, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Home Lander, Thank you for reverting User:Snowsleeping's edit. I think the reason why this user made the edit was so he could get away with his sockpuppetry which means that these 2 accounts that I suspected are clearly sockpuppets of this user. Thanks. TheNewSMG (talk) 18:45, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

TheNewSMG, they tried to make one other edit as well, but it was blocked by the filter. That was how I spotted what they were doing. Home Lander (talk) 18:47, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again, I think the case should be reopened. TheNewSMG (talk) 18:48, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
At minimum this is disruptive editing, but I suspect, like you said, there is something more to it. Home Lander (talk) 18:50, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Should I reopen the case? TheNewSMG (talk) 18:53, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well, TheNewSMG, I don't have any familiarity with the case. If you can provide diffs/evidence that two accounts are the same, then you can reopen the case and supply that information. You can use Twinkle to reopen the case easily and it shouldn't muck up the existing case that's already closed. Home Lander (talk) 18:55, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A message from Wallboy101

Wallboy101 (talk) 20:08, 13 August 2017 (UTC)Hey Home Lander, could you check my article about adult film actress Abella Anderson that I've just created? It gives me a warning at the top that I haven't added any reliable sources since it is a BLP. I believe I've added two reliable sources. Thank you!Wallboy101 (talk) 20:12, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the BLP PROD tag since you've now added sources. Home Lander (talk) 20:40, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Twinkle CSD tags

Hi,

We were discussing this yesterday on my talk page, but I noticed you added a generic A7 tag with Twinkle. How did you do this? The only A7 options I have in Twinkle are the specific ones. Adam9007 (talk) 17:32, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Adam9007, in the Twinkle CSD screen, tick the box "Tag with multiple criteria" and the A7 will switch to a generic tag. You don't actually have to select multiple to get it to process. Home Lander (talk) 18:32, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I wondered if that's what you were doing. But it beats me why anyone would want to use the generic tag over a specific one. It's one of the reasons I use Twinkle rather than page curation. Adam9007 (talk) 18:36, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Adam9007, the rough Arabic translation that Google returned on the above article made it seem like some of it was about a person, but then it said something about "the company", or similar. So I tagged it generically. Sometimes I also use the generic one for Youtubers, where it's not exactly clear whether the article is about a person or their channel. Of course, if you are tagging multiple criteria, then you have no choice but to use the generic one. Home Lander (talk) 18:40, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

August 2017

(talk page stalker) Your repeated efforts to repeatedly vandalize Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism makes it seem you are unaware that Wikipedia is a serious projec Really? Seems unlikely.... Adam9007 (talk) 00:48, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Adam9007: Huh? It's obviously a troll. She's currently offline at the moment, but see no reason to do it. KGirl (Wanna chat?) 00:54, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@KGirlTrucker81: Yes, I figured as much, and considered simply reverting it, but foolishly decided to AGF... Adam9007 (talk) 00:58, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Adam9007: An admin has blocked this IP recently, so WP:DENY would be applicable. KGirl (Wanna chat?) 01:01, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Adam9007 & KGirlTrucker81, the funny thing is, you know you've definitely gotten the vandals' goat when they try stuff like this. Home Lander (talk) 01:03, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like a rangeblock is now in pace so this should be over with for now. Home Lander (talk) 01:10, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

the funny thing is, you know you've definitely gotten the vandals' goat when they try stuff like this I've seen worse: fake block and checkuser notices. As opposed to mere "threats". Adam9007 (talk) 01:13, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That is true, definitely worse off there. I could probably go on from here, but for the sake of WP:BEANS I won't. Home Lander (talk) 01:15, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I also remember that someone impersonating me was going around giving barnstars! Adam9007 (talk) 01:17, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Now that's a good one! More importantly though, who were they giving them to? Home Lander (talk) 01:20, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Can't remember actually, we can check, but an admin was also going around telling those who had received one that it was an imposter and not me. Adam9007 (talk) 01:22, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Same issue in the past, but the account has no edits and soft blocked. KGirl (Wanna chat?) 01:27, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I had one of those, too, though it never edited, created around the same time as this wonderful sock if I remember right. Home Lander (talk) 01:29, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Here's an talk archive where he's actually impersonating me telling this is a doplännganer or not. KGirl (Wanna chat?) 01:38, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Maybe I should create a doppelgänger account? I've been wondering for a while how likely an account with a name such as アダム9007 is to be created. Adam9007 (talk) 01:40, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You might want to try registering an account with "ohs" instead of zeros. Don't know if the system will let you. Home Lander (talk) 01:43, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Let's hope not... But what I do find a bit queer is that the system allowed the imposter's name. Nor am I the only person to be impersonated by someone with a very similar username. I thought the system doesn't let you have a name if it's too similar to an existing one? I thought that was how I ended up with my username... Adam9007 (talk) 01:58, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's supposed to prevent registration of a near-identical name, though I don't know exactly how it functions. Home Lander (talk) 02:01, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I just tried to register "Home lander" and it blocked it for being too similar. But apparently adding a number or other letter would get around it, based on the account I mentioned above. Home Lander (talk) 02:03, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Try with a different username containing interests, things etc. :/ KGirl (Wanna chat?) 02:07, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Symbols won't work in the username, but changing the lowercase "L" to a capital "I" worked. Shows the limitations of the filter. Home Lander (talk) 02:12, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if the system will recognise Arabic letter marks.. Or can we end up with a username that looks like طœطœطœطœطœطœطœطœط? Adam9007 (talk) 02:18, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Generates a message: The username "طœطœطœطœطœطœطœطœط" is not allowed to prevent confusing or spoofed usernames: Contains incompatible mixed scripts. Please choose another username. Home Lander (talk) 02:20, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Here's an example I just created today: KGirlGamer81 KGirl (Wanna chat?) 02:22, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I'm not sure how a filter could be created to recognize strings that we obviously recognize as similar, but to a computer are clearly not. Home Lander (talk) 02:24, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) It's odd: Arabic letter marks are normally invisible (remember this?), but if I make them visible, I can then copy them and they will be visible in unicode... Adam9007 (talk) 02:25, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I remember that, but forgot that was you! Clearly that letter has odd properties; I never heard back from that account or the IP on how they originally showed up there, or how the IP was able to see them. Home Lander (talk) 02:27, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I also thought that we might be able to have an "invisible" username, which would be immensely confusing. I can only assume the IP saw them the same way I did... Adam9007 (talk) 02:30, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh dear. WP:BEANS Home Lander (talk) 02:34, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's only 10:35 EDT where I'm going to sleep, so I may discuss further tomorrow. KGirl (Wanna chat?) 02:37, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's nearly 4am where I am: . (yes, what I did was intentional ) Adam9007 (talk) 02:53, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Think it's time for you to take the advice at WP:TIRED: If you're merely suffering from sleep deprivation then turn off your computer and go to bed. If you are insomniac do some new page patrolling or vandalism fighting, this may eventually make you feel tired enough to enjoy a good night's rest.
