Pawn Sacrifice is a 2015 American biographical thriller film directed by Edward Zwick and written by Steven Knight. The film stars Tobey Maguire as Bobby Fischer, Liev Schreiber as Boris Spassky, and Lily Rabe as Joan Fischer. The film is set to be released in the United States on September 16, 2015.[2]
Plot
In this true story set during the rise of the Cold War, American chess professional Bobby Fischer (Tobey Maguire) finds himself caught between two superpowers when he challenges the Soviet Empire and its greatest player of all, Boris Spassky (Liev Schreiber).

Production
Principal photography began in early October 2013 in Reykjavík, Iceland.[3]In mid-October 41 days of shooting began in Montreal, Canada, which were wrapped in Los Angeles on December 11, 2013.[4]
Release
The film had its world premiere at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2014.[5] On September 10, 2014, Bleecker Street acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the film, the company's first acquisition.[6] The film was originally set to be released in the United States on September 18, 2015, however, it was pushed up to September 16.[7][8]
Critical reception
The film received mixed to positive reviews, with Maguire's performance receiving critical acclaim. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 89%, based on 9 reviews, with an average rating of 6/10.[9] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 57 out of 100, based on 6 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[10]
