== Assists/Clean sheets ==

It appears that assists/clean sheets are not included in the template table. Does it mean that we need to help remove the assists and clean sheets columns in all of the football player articles?--[[User:Miunouta|Miunouta]] ([[User talk:Miunouta|talk]]) 23:12, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Question regarding Honours (cup achievements)

Must a player have participated in the final of a competition for it to be added to his/her list of honours? For example, Alexander Hleb was never selected by Barcelona for the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final, yet it is included in his honours. The same for Marco Ferreira, never selected for the 2004 UEFA Champions League Final, yet because he played in the qualifying rounds it is included in his honours. Please clarify. No, as long as the player have played in one or more games in the competition earlier and still plays for the team when they win, it's fine. - Terje Christiansen (talk) 23:37, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is a betting website appropriate in the template as a link for Wikipedia articles?

I note that a link to Soccerbase is part of the template for football players. Is this appropriate? Soccerbase is designed to promote gambling. Its entire function is to tempt people to take a bet. On Ashley Cole's web page with Soccerbase, I am offered a 25 pound free bet as a new customer. "BET NOW" flashes every 10 seconds. But that's not all. If I'm an old customer, there's a link to Ladbrokes so that I can deposit and withdraw money, and if I don't have an account with this organisation, a link is provided to enable me to open such an account. Below that is another link to enable to me to bet every day of the year! Four games are presented to tempt me. "BET NOW!' screams a sign in the bottom right hand corner. Below that, Billy Bunter, tempts me to lay a bet while there is time and further down there is more betting news, designed to get me to wager my money.

Now that's all very nice - especially for Soccerbet - and I am sure that they do very nicely, thank you very much, from the links that Wikipedia so generously provides them. However, there is the small matter of Wikipedia policy. It advises us to avoid links to individual web pages that primarily exist to sell products or services, or to web pages with objectionable amounts of advertising. And that, of course, is exactly what Soccerbase exists for. All the statistics are simply bait to tempt you to bet, now, Now, NOW!

On the strength of this evidence I think I would be entitled to propose a purge of Soccerbase from Wikipedia. However, my proposal is far more modest. I propose that we change the template so that it links to the BBC website rather than Soccerbase.

Why the BBC? The BBC Website gives statistical information about players and matches in a more digested form. It does not push gambling and users may find its statistics more useful. Take Nathan Cole, who plays for Chelsea FC. The BBC webpage may be compared with the Football Betting site, Soccerbase to judge the difference.

Changing the template would only mean that new soccer players would be linked to the BBC rather than a betting web site. It does not change any existing player profile. That is another question entirely.

What do others think? Michael Glass (talk) 01:47, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Glass seems to have made a good observation here - the BBC has a reputation for impartiality while Soccerbase, as Michael point out, is a sponsored site. Martinvl (talk) 06:26, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The canvassing rules mean that I must declare I was alerted to this thread (without a view being expressed) by one of the participants, and that my comment may be disregarded. However, it does seem a no-brainer that Soccerbase should be removed from a template; it can be linked from articles, sure. In the same way, a link to Rotten tomatoes, the move review site, would never for a second be allowed on a template. Tony (talk) 09:48, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Honours-section / Medal templates

What is the best way of listing honours? The most normal thing to do, as far as I can see, is the way it's done in Wayne Rooney with a "honours" section, other pages like this "MoS"-page got the honours listed in the infobox using the |medaltemplate= parameter, while some pages like Lionel Messi has the honours listed both ways. Should we adjust this MoS-page, or is this the right way to do it? --Mentoz86 (talk) 14:46, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bit late, but I would say like Messi now, i.e. medaltemplates as well, but only for national teams. It should only be for competitions where a gold, silver and bronze medal is awarded, really. But other national team competitions is fine as well maybe? – Terje Christiansen (talk) 23:28, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Owen Hargreaves

I'm attempting to add annotated historical content to the Owen Hargreaves article about the controversy caused in Canada by his decision to play for the English national team. My edits are continuously deleted by a User PeeJay2K3 without putting up any proof that the controversy is untrue. How do I escalate? — Preceding unsigned comment added by LilOwens (talk • contribs) 16:29, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Appearances and goals

If goals and appearances are unknown for a player due to lack of sources, what is the appropriate way of displaying the lack of information in the infobox? --MicroX (talk) 17:07, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In such cases I leave the goals and apps empty. --Jaellee (talk) 18:44, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
