Transliteration of Cities, Towns, and Provinces of the Philippines into Hangul

Good evening! I am originally from WikiProject Philippines. And I would like to offer help to WikiProject Korea by translating cities, towns, and provinces of the Philippines into Hangul so as to aid Korean Wikipedians who are interested in creating, editing, and expanding articles that are related to the Philippines. I hope for the immediate response. Thanks! - Merrick Lee, 23:47 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Meetups?

I hear there was a meetup a year ago in Seoul, shouldn't it be listed at Wikipedia:Meetup? Also, any plans for a future one? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 17:16, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There was one last year in Yeouido if I remember correctly. I only saw info posted on the Korean wiki as a banner. Would be interested in attending if I know I can use English as my Korean is alright but limited. Would be interested in one if another is scheduled. ₪RicknAsia₪ 20:10, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Worst case we could try to schedule something ourselves :) Anyone else reading this who is actually in Korea and would like to attend? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 07:34, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am down for it. Sorry for the late reply as I just saw this now. I bet you can recommend a coffee shop at a good local university ;) ₪RicknAsia₪ 15:34, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I actually spend most of my time at a campus in Ansan, not Seoul, but I am at Hanyang University twice a week. How's your time on Tue or Thur? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:28, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On those days I end work at 4:30 in central Seoul. I would be available after work either any Tue or Thur. How do those days look for you next week? ₪RicknAsia₪ 15:04, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for a Korean Campus Ambassador

I wonder if anybody here would be interested in becoming a Wikipedia:Campus Ambassador for the Seoul area? I will be teaching another course in the fall (see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Korea#Korean_students_on_English_Wikipedia) and I am considering allowing students to edit Korean Wikipedia. But I'd need a Korean speaker familiar with Korean Wikipedia to help them out if issues arise there. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 07:29, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help with an article?

Hi all! I need some help with an article. The article in question is Busan Gaeseong Middle School murder and the biggest issue comes from translation. I can see that the Korean Wikipedia page has an entry ([1]) that has more details and sources. This looks to be potentially notable by the standards here on this Wikipedia, so I'd hate to see this deleted when it could be saved. Basically, I need people to help translate and add information from the Korean sources and establish notability. I'll help where I can, but I don't speak Korean and can only use Google Translate, so I'm working with a serious handicap. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 10:52, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I can remove the PROD and it will be forced into AFD. Also you can go on the Korean Wikipedia embassy ko: 위키백과:대사관 and ask for help there. There are some individuals I know on the Korean Wikipedia that can help too WhisperToMe (talk) 19:22, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I wish I could help but my Korean isn't good. If the article looks like it will most likely get deleted, can somebody just move it as a sub-page under her page? Hate to see something get deleted without preserving the information/work. Jae ₩on (Deposit) 20:11, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • You can post in English at the embassy. A Korean speaker there can help you. Several users on the Korean Wikipedia speak English. WhisperToMe (talk) 20:55, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Manchukuo discussion

Here's a notice from Benlisquare about a topic which may interest people here:

It's currently being disputed whether Manchukuo was a puppet state or not. At the moment, I'm trying to compile a list of books and academic papers that refer to Manchukuo as a "puppet state". MOS discussion about removing non-Roman script names from lede sentence

There is an ongoing discussion about amending Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section to discourage listing non-English names of subjects in the lede sentence of articles, and to encourage moving them to an infobox or footnote. This may be of interest to those of us here at WP:KOREA since our own articles are inconsistent in this regard: some use {{ko-hhrm}} or {{lang-ko}} to include Korean names in the lede sentence, while others use only {{Infobox Korean name}} and don't list any Korean names in the lede, and some do both. In any case, your comments are welcome on the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Lead section#Proposal: move most translations and transliterations from lead sentence to footnote. Thanks, quant18 (talk) 04:53, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion: Korean given name articles

I just want to get people's opinion on the articles that are being created now for Korean given names. The category containing these names can be found here.

In my opinion, this is a useless collection of articles, and the list of names is basically endless. There's no list of English given names, so should there really be a list of Korean names?

Additionally, now the same user who is creating these articles has begun to create articles about individual syllables within given names. Examples include Jae and Young.

I'm curious to see what other people think of this. I just don't think that the creation of these articles improves Wikipedia at all. If they are to exist, perhaps the Wiktionary would be a better place for them since the articles usually include only one sentence explaining that it is a name or a syllable, and then a list of famous people who share the name. Rystheguy (talk) 04:43, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

i will add names soon by --Sunuraju (talk) 04:47, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
because you wrote Nam (Korean name) and Kwang right? i deiced to add Young, Jae and Byung, Woo and many more by --Sunuraju (talk) 05:34, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't write Nam (Korean name) or Kwang. Nam is about a family name, not a given name. It's mentioned in the article that it is also a syllable in some Korean names. Rystheguy (talk) 09:37, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My comments:

  1. The WP:OTHERCRAPDOESNTEXIST argument isn't correct; WP:SETINDEX articles about individual given names, listing the original orthography for those names and the Wikipedia articles of people with that given name, are a well-established practise under Wikipedia:WikiProject Anthroponymy. See for example the entire category tree Category:Given names by culture.
  2. Additionally, there's lists of given names for a number of countries & cultures, both annotated (e.g. List of Irish-language given names) and unannotated (e.g. List of Arabic theophoric names), etc. Along with ranking lists like List of most popular given names by state in the United States.
  3. Individual syllable articles are probably useless. If the same syllable is a surname or an actual given name in and of itself, it may be worth mentioning given names containing that syllable as well; the general practise on more well-developed pages (e.g. Bert (name) is to list etymologically related names (e.g. Robert, Bertrand) on the page, but not every individual holder of the names themselves (just those whose name is exactly Bert).
  4. I haven't been creating articles about individual syllables in given names, but I cleaned up a number of the really old pre-existing ones (untouched since 2007 or so) like Kyung, Eun, Kwang, etc. which just willy-nilly listed every single person having that syllable in their name (which would have gone to hundreds or thousands of entries if they'd been filled out).
  5. Some of these characters are used as surnames as well; surname pages are generally easier to develop as articles in addition to just being set index pages, since there's more data & and other historical material written about them.

Cheers, quant18 (talk) 07:19, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your input, I see your point. The single-syllable articles are the ones that motivated me to write this. I mentioned the given names because I didn't see them being very useful but I can see now after looking at some of the lists you provided that the articles can become more detailed and helpful in some situations. I also wasn't saying that because no list of English names exists, that no Korean list should. I was just saying that if you think of it in terms of English names, it would be silly to try to create articles for every English given name that exists. How would you go about determining if they were all notable? There are new names being created every day, and at what point can you say that a name is notable enough to have its own encyclopaedia article? A list would make more sense, in my opinion, than to create individual articles for every name. As for the single-syllable name articles, I still think they're useless unless, like you said, they are surnames or can stand alone as a complete given name. You show as (at least) one of the teams in the Asian League is Portuguese-- was this team Macanense, before reversion? Otherwise it makes little sense, as Portugal plays in UEFA, not Asia. Korean prosecution service에 대한 english content

This article is too biased and negative toward korean prosecution service in general. It seems that the author described Korean prosecution service from too controversial cases. Actually the right wing(half of the population supports some prosecution cases while the left wing blames them. The author wrote and understand all the mentioned cases from radical or leftist views.

남산 and 南山

Are these common ways of writing the same thing in Korean? 南山 is a disambiguation page on English WP and includes several entries for Namshan. The linked article on the Korean WP is [4], which to my ignorant eyes appears to be a different set of characters, however 南山 does appear in parentheses several times in the article, thus my question. The reason I'm asking is that 南山 has been nominated for deletion, and I'm wondering if it's reasonable to include the Namshan entries on the page.--Wikimedes (talk) 19:02, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
