Maelstrom is the third book of the Destroyermen series by author Taylor Anderson. Captain Matthew Reddy, the crew of the Walker and their Lemurian allies, have won several battles against the Grik, a loathsome race of cannibilistic lizards engaged in a war of genocide against the sea-going lemur race Walker has befriended. But the Grik have now sent a huge force (500 ships, 150,000-200,000 soldiers) to destroy them and their adopted base at Baalkpaan. Worse yet, the Grik force is accompanied by a Japanese heavy cruiser, the Amagi, which has made a Devil's bargain with the lizards. The Amagi by itself is more than a match for both of Reddy's antique destroyers and battered Catalina PBY -- can they prevail?
