Image

Hi, can you upload this image. It will be good image can be used in the article. I am still not well-versed in uploading images outside Flickr. It's probably copyrighted. In this case, a {{Non-free historic image}} tag would be appropriate, as it is a unique historic image, and the copyright for it is most likely held by the person who took the image or the agency employing the person. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 17:06, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When you are changing the flow of sentences, can you please change the position of the references at the same time. This edit resulted in information not supported by reference at the end of the sentence. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 17:50, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have some patience for 5 to 10 minutes. I will explain you. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 17:53, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
See this version. In this version you rearranged the sentences where the reference for the fact "The anti-tobacco movement was influenced by the ideological concept of racial hygiene and bodily purity" became It's Not Just PR: Public Relations in Society. But the reference which support this fact is Nazi War on Cancer. After each single sentence, the reference which supports the sentence should be used.

Adam was a boy (1). Adam went to a public school (2). Adam died in a road accident (3). Three different sentence are supported by three different references. If the sentences are rearranged as Adam who died in road accident, went to public school (2)(3), you will say the references are supporting all the information. But care should be taken which reference supports which information. In this case, the format will be Adam who died in road accident,(3) went to public school(2). Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 18:15, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the questions you raised, all the information are supported by Nazi War on Cancer. The decrease in tobacco consumption during the Second World War was certainly due to Nazi measures where the laws were aggressively implemented. You can see in the Measures section that at the end of the 1930s, the Nazis enacted more and more laws which was lacking at the first half of the 1930s. This aggressive measure was responsible for declining tobacco rate, not war. Please note that soldiers were allowed to smoke, war did not prevent them from smoking, a fact on which Hitler lamented. You will find this in the Hitler's attitude section. And regarding your second query, this factor is also mentioned by Proctor. He used the word "muted" which I reworded to "silenced". I think he probably want to mean that the outcome of the health research often restricted from the public probably due to the pressure from tobacco industry. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 18:27, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I found another interesting image. It shows the graph of the total number of cigarettes produced in Germany from 1932 to 1944. I think this image will be needed. And here is another image which should be used in the Measures section. Three images are enough for the article. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 19:48, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jews of Byzantium

Thank you, Cplakidas, for your compliment and suggestions. You are correct in saying that the article only deals with the legal status of the Jews of Byzantium. Maybe the solution is to expand the article, rather than move it. I think that "Legal Status of the Jews during the Byzantine Empire" would be somewhat cumbersome, especially given that there would not be a more general article for the Jews of the Byzantine Empire. Your point on "Byzantium" vs. "Byzantine Empire" is well taken. How can I change that? Saepe Fidelis (talk) 09:38, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'll get working on it. Saepe Fidelis (talk) 12:23, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Medieval Bulgarian Army

Thank you very much far that constructive comment. I think that you should move the things in the history section to the tactics because I can miss something. Those quotations from the medieval authors are taken directly from Zlatarski but I will try to find the edition. I will expand the battles in the first section and the Ottoman advance. One of the major difficulties would be to find book in English, as most of the book in the net are not free.

Good luck on the exams ;-) I just finished mine two days ago and I hope you would be successful as well. Best, --Gligan (talk) 15:29, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Polytonic fonts

Hallo Constantine! I did not disappear, I had only a lot to do on the job... :-((( I will do as you said, but actually this is another MS mistery (of course on Firefox everything works great :-)). Regarding football, Italy deserved the elimination. I hope too that Turkey will make it, a turkish victory after a greek one at the EC would really be a sign of God/Allah. ;-) About the comment, it comes from cute little book of Eyice, but unfortunately he does not explain it. Personally I found the quality of the brickwork low, typical of the decadence of the last period, but unfortunately I cannot write it on wikipedia (at least until I don't get a job at Dumbarton Oaks). :-( Cheers, Alex2006 (talk) 10:36, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yet another Church

Hallo Constantine, yet another church! Cheers, Alex2006 (talk) 07:16, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good morning Constantine, and thanks for the review. Only two things. The assumption that you removed comes from Müller-Wiener. He says that the sources tells about an usage of the Imperial Palace until some years before the destruction of the church, and that it is possible that the emperors renounced to live in the Blachernae palace also because with the destruction of the church and of the relics an important reason to live there had disappeared too. Of course, with more money, they could have rebuilt the church... Another thing: in the article about the Blachernitissa, it is written that the Icon escaped the distruction of the church and was brought to the Athos. None of my sources mentions that. Do you think that this is true, or is only a legend? Many thanks, Cheers, Alex2006 (talk) 06:22, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Andronikos Kontostephanos

Hi,

I can think of at least one reason for a separate section for the civil responsibilities of the megas doux.

You and I know that Byzantine military commanders, especially aristocrats, very often had non-military responsibilities and interests: they were civil governors, sat on church councils as lay advisors, acted as judges, wrote histories etc etc. The casual reader might well not know this, and to emphasise that Andronikos Kontostephanos was not only a man of war might be advantageous.

Finding more on Andronikos' non-military life would be excellent, unfortunately while both his brothers sat on church synods etc., I don't have any record of his doing the same. I cannot even find a record of his court title.Urselius (talk) 21:19, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can you urgently help Milhist please?

We've had a rather large bombshell dropped on us. The Wikipedia editorial team are aiming to release a version of Wikipedia on CD/DVD in time for the end of year holiday season. They've provided us with a list of 1333 Milhist articles they intend including.

The problem is that the quality of these articles varies considerably.

We've put together review page listing all the articles, in twenty-five article worklists. I'm hoping that 15-20 trusted editors can work through the list, weedying out problem articles and identifying suitable versions for release. The work is as far away from a tagging and assessing drive as you can imagine though, for convenience and ease of use, we've closely followed the traditional Milhist drive format.

This is, at the moment, an invitation-only review. The reason is that time is short and we can't afford too many mistakes. I'm only contacting experienced editors who performed very well indeed in the last two Milhist drives. I guess that working through a worklist of twenty-five articles will take between one and three hours to do. We're aiming to get the preliminary work done by next Sunday, so it's urgent too.

I do hope you can help but – if it's not too much trouble – if you are unable to participate at the moment, would you please let me know on my talk page? otherwise, please sign up here. Thank you for your time, --ROGER DAVIES talk 17:23, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Goudi

Thanks for your improvements there. Question: is it worth keeping Military League as a separate article? I could go either way, but given how closely the League's history is intertwined with that of the coup, and given that we (I think) now describe it in greater detail in the coup article than in the Military League article itself, the case for a redirect seems plausible, even strong. Biruitorul Talk 17:46, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, and I look forward to the expansion (I went right ahead with the redirect). As you may have noticed, the French have been putting out some fine articles on modern Greek history. (Indeed their Goudi article, now a GA, is itself slated for expansion in preparation for an FAC.) Révolte de Therissos seems like a good project for my next translation. There's always Histoire de la Crète (cf. our rather pitiful History of Crete), but that may take a while longer, if you know what I mean. Biruitorul Talk 19:24, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Milhist W0.7: update

Thank you very much for your help in our review of the W0.7-nominated articles, which has proved to be a very worthwhile exercise. As the number of sub-standard articles found was much higher than anticipated, the coordinators are currently considering how best to follow this up, given the project's limited resources and the short time span – under three weeks - for making improvements. The review has been a very worthwhile exercise and will lead to a major quality improvement initiative in the very near future. In the meantime, if you found any articles that you feel you could easily fix, I'd be very grateful if you invested a little time doing so. Please also feel free to nominate any articles for inclusion which you feel were overlooked. re: WP 0.7 noms

I am so sorry about the slow response. As you may have noticed, I have now set up checklists to sort out the final selection. What would be really useful would be if you could nominate the proposed replacements mentioned in our original worklists. This'll involve clicking through the worklists, I'm afraid, and writing the rationales but there aren't that many replacements listed. The replacement suggestions all sounded very reasonable and the articles themselves looked in reasonable shape. Because of the way the processes are separated at W1.0, we may end up with both the original article and the "replacement" but I can live with that. --ROGER DAVIES talk 04:31, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Karamanlides

Dear Mr. Plakidas, I posted an addition to the article KARAMANLIDES, exactly after a message [citation needed], because the preceding theory sounded a bit arbitrary to me. You deleted immediately my addition, with this comment :

"rv - The Karaman emirate is not the same as the population called "karamanlis"

I am afraid that the message [citation needed] meant that it was the man who posted the article that had to prove his allegations. You proceede by making another arbitrary (in my opinion) assumption, and delete my well-documented position. Why not leave it there, and let the curious reader verify what is true ?

I always had my reserves about WIKI. It is better to rely on good old books on the subject, or in good reference books that guide you to a wide bibliography. Your stance has enhanced my opinion on WIKI.

I wish you good health.

PS : I had an uncle, Ioannis Vafeiadis, Topogr. Engineer, who lived in Patras. But he died 40 years ago.

I'll reply here, as you have no permanent address. Hopefully you'll see it. First, let me apologize. It was a bit of hasty editing and bad judgement, prompted by the fact that the formatting of the text you added was odd, and looked very much like the type of rants one gets from anonymous editors in Wikipedia. The Karaman Emirate per se has indeed nothing to do with the Karamanlides, who simply took their name from the area centuries later. I suppose reverting it was a reflex reaction, and not well thought out (and I shall include the gist of your argument in the article forthwith). To be honest, I was feeling a bit uneasy and was about to recheck it. Hopefully you will not draw too many conclusions about Wikipedia from one incident. I agree (and WP states it quite clearly) that primary and secondary sources are always better, however you will find that there is much good work being done here also. best regards, Constantine 19:45, 18 October 2008

Thank you, Constantine ! I' ve seen the amendment you made, it is a fine summary, OK.

Now concerning the allegation that Karamanlides had not much to do with Greece, as written in the article : I am the descendant of Trabzon Pontians. All my ancestors, to great-great-granpas were from Trabzon, with two exceptions : One was a captain from an Aegean island, who married my great-grandmother from my mother's side, and the other a Karamanli from Kaiseri (Caesareia). He was born around 1820, and died in 1904, and was the grandfather of my father. My father, born in 1892, had vivid recollections of him. While all my other ancestors were merchants, this one was a teacher. His father, a rich merchant from Kaiseri, sent him to study in Athens. He became a teacher, and returned in Kaiseri to work as a teacher to schools the local Karamanli community was ready to found. But the local Turkish authorities did not allowed it, and the man, burning from the wish to teach the marvels of Greek culture, went to Trabzon, where there were no restrictions. There he married my great-granma ! As you see, even in the beginning of the 19th century the Karamanlides knew very well to whom they belonged. The first schools, including hugh schools, in Cappadocia etc were founded at the end of the 19th century, when conditions had eased a bit.

A very good and extended history of Asia Minor communities can be found in SPIROS VRYONIS, THE DECLINE OF MEDIEVAL HELLENISM IN ASIA MINOR AND THE PROCESS OF ISLAMIZATION FROM THE ELEVENTH THROUGH THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY, University of California Press, ISBN 960-250-117-0.

RE:Constantinople map

Hallo Kostantinos,

and sorry for the late answer. Actually, the reason of the delay is that I am sick, and the story is becoming more and more complicated, largely due to the manifest incompetence of some swiss doctors. I promise you that as soon as I will be able to reach the library, I will correct the map. Thanks for your patience, kalinikta again, Alex2006 (talk) 16:56, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good to see you helpin the editor who created this and other pages, but shouldn't this just be a redirect to Shahin with maybe some of the material incorporated into it? dougweller (talk) 19:58, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Roman bridges

Hello Cplakidas. I want to ask you whether you are interested in translating other German articles on Roman/Byzantine bridges into English? Some other worthwhile candidates would be:

Kind regards Gun Powder Ma (talk) 02:02, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cplakidas. Saw you are a Greek native speaker. Are you btw also interested in translating de:Brücke bei Limyra into Greek (time is no problem)? Unfortunately, all the people I asked only know ancient Greek and were not familiar with the technical terms. If not, would you be so kind and put the bridge article on a 'to be translated list' at the Greek Wikipedia? I would not ask, if the bridge were not so incredibly important - and fascinating. :-) Kind regards Gun Powder Ma (talk) 11:58, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dkace (talk) 14:36, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dkace (talk) 14:40, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
