Range blocks

Hiya I saw you recent post at the village pump, and thought I'd come an teach you how you could have done it.

Firstly do a reverse DNS check to see the internet provider. If it's AOL give up. AOL is far too large, has far too many computers for you to ba able to block the vandal. You'll sucseed in blocking loads of legit users and probably won't get the actual vandal.

Assuming it's not AOL then proceed as follows,

64.12.116.10 through 64.12.117.22

Set the last digits to 0 64.12.116.0 ->> 64.12.117.0

do two /24 blocks 64.12.116.0/24 and 64.12.117.0/24 that will block a total of 512 IPs

Stick to /24 only if you are at all unsure about what you are doing. Note that /31 will block fewer than /24 and /16 will block a lot more. Never go lower than /16 ( I don't you you can in actual fact anyway) Also since range blocks catch innocents as well as vandals keep them short. Policy is 24 hours only I think.

Stress

Cookies!
Cookies!

You always seem to be under a lot of stress, what with dealing with trolls and vandals and people who just don't get it. Relax and have a cookie. You'll feel better (food allergies excepted). -- Cyrius| 06:18, 7 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I thought you might be interested in giving the plot section a rewrite. I think it's quite bare (even though I contributed as much as I could). Plus, it ends abruptly in the mid-1990s with Trevor marrying Janet. A LOT has happened since then. Mike H 20:01, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)

Speaking of Trevor and Janet, I added a bit about the television episode change to Oklahoma City bombing and 1995 in television. Here's the excerpt from the latter:

Regarding reversion

Regarding a recent plurality reversion you made [Nockers (Changeling) > Nocker (Changeling)]. As my belief is that the article in question is designed to describe a specific group of beings in the given universe rather than a single being that can be grouped with others, I'm inquiring about policy. Other groups in similar contexts (Shadow Lords for Werewolf: The Apocalypse, etc.) appear to be listed as groups rather than individuals that can be grouped. If, however, your belief on the matter is firm, I will understand.

Jimmy Kinnon lemma, advertising

Hi Rick, newcomer to Wikipedia here. Not sure if you wondered, my IP is 217.254.5.118. At times I was just too lazy to log in. I appreciate your changes to the above lemma, however, I wondered how the previous link descriptions were 'advertising'? Please enlighten me and thank you for the effort.

Tribute2jimmyk 06:04, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Thanks, saw your reply on my talk page. Tribute2jimmyk 08:54, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi - you reverted my work on Wikipedia:Tools why exactly? I did quite a bit of re-structuring and some translating there, and I had added a few links. Would you restore that, or at least explain what the problem was here? Please reply on my user page at the german WP. -- 217.82.181.205 11:30, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC) (that is de:Benutzer:Duesentrieb)

Please see User:217.82.181.205. RickK 19:09, Aug 25, 2004 (UTC)
My english is that bad, is it? Oh, well... what I was trying to do is to create an english version of de:Wikipedia:Helferlein, a page giving an overwie of tools for the wikipedia. I talked about that to a couple of people on #mediawiki, and User:Sj created the page as a stub asking for translations. I started translating a chunk a day, under different IPs (most of the page was actually done by me, others fixed my english). The part you reverted was mostly a restructuring of the page, away from the (terrible) structure of the german original.
I will no got there an restore my changes - I will try to improve my language, but if you would have a look at it later on, i would be grateful.
Maybe I should create an account on the egnlish WP for that. But my nick is taken by someone with only one edit ages ago... hold on... there we go: now i'm User:Gearloose. Better?

Favor

I've just blocked User:66.123.255.100 again for repeated disruptive behavior without discussion. I know you helped manage this guy last time around and I have a small favor to ask. His last edit to Richie Rich was characteristically nonsensical and detracts from the article. I don't want to revert it myself because I will be inviolation of the WP:3RR. This is the revert I'm talking about: [1]. I think that just this one edit needs to be reverted, but you can rollback if you think that's necessary. Thanks. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 19:44, Aug 25, 2004 (UTC)

Ho boy, it looks like it's that time again. Do you think this is time for a one month ban as suggested in Wikipedia:Bans and blocks? With the edits this guy is making and his complete lack of cooperation, it seems like he's making what would normally be a pretty tough decision easy. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 20:56, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)

Little question

Hi Rick, would you care to explain that "Overly POV-driven" thing? I'd love to hear why. GeneralPatton 22:50, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Persistent vandals

Hey, Rick, a "contributor" (User talk:205.188.116.206) just vandalized one of my "pet" pages (Irrigation), and I noticed you had already warned this character to stop. I see this one has a long history of such "contributions". I reverted the edit, but can anything else be done? I see a lot of people having to waste their productive time fixing these messes. H2O 00:38, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

AMC

Nice edit on that. It's a nice springboard from Tom Cudahy's marriage to Barbara to his marriage with Livia. Speaking of, how was Livia first introduced? Wasn't she Janet's lawyer? Mike H 19:37, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)

Don't quote me on it but I'm pretty sure she was Janet's lawyer. I think Dimitri hired her. Mike H 19:51, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)

The 2000s look really good to me. Lemme see if you mentioned Maria coming back from the dead at Edmund and Brooke's wedding. You might have but I missed it. Oh, and those '70s and '80s? That's so all you. I wasn't even alive for the show's first 16 or so years. Mike H 23:04, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)

Okay, I looked and didn't find it. That needs to be added. You know, all the stuff blah blah Nevada and Maureen Gorman. Mike H 23:06, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)

One more important thing. I looked over it but I might have missed it...Bianca's loves. Frankie. Maggie. Lena. Those need to be mentioned. I would but I couldn't do it completely. Mike H 23:08, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)

No, but by all means, shift the pictures so they're user-friendly. I'll tell you if there are any problems. Now that the article is so long, I can add more logos corresponding with the time periods. Mike H 23:14, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)

Talk pages

Don't refactor other users' Talk pages. That is extremely poor form. -- Netoholic @

I went and looked in the history. What are you talking about? Mike H 23:49, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)

Email

I sent you an email. Mike H 23:59, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)

No kidding. Mintguy isn't going looking for this.

The You-Know-Who

Hi! Guess who's back. Yup. The Bandit. Latest proxy is 64.252.91.195. Gzornenplatz seems to insist that these stay, but all he's doing is formatting the damned things after he removes the templates. We're no better off at all that way. Please, please please just delete these latest stubs, formatted or not. Thanks. - Lucky 6.9 18:43, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Cool! I reverted them back to speedy deletes and it looks as if another admin clipped them. I'll double-check on new pages. In the meantime, could I ask you to drop Gzornenplatz a polite note if you think it's appropriate? Thanks yet again. - Lucky 6.9 20:45, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)

    • Tell you what...if it is, I'll personally break his neck. Gently, of course.  :^) Could you resend the wiki? I didn't get anything to click on. - Lucky 6.9 22:01, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Darn. I wish it was. This guy at the very least cooked up a user name, but he hasn't answered me. A few folks have left polite word on his talk page. He may not be the Bandit, but he certainly is becoming rather prolific at creating malformed substubs. - Lucky 6.9 22:06, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Two more, and one's been deleted. Proxy is 69.37.72.240 and I've added it to the list. Someone made a halfway decent substub out of Sasha Mitchell (who?!?). - Lucky 6.9 23:24, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)

VfD policy for dicdefs

Good afternoon, RickK. In light of the discussion at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Sty, I have opened a discussion thread at Wikipedia talk:Deletion policy#Dictionary Definitions. I'd be interested in your thoughts. Thanks. By the way, I apologize if my tone in the VfD thread offended. Rossami 20:27, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Header dis-ambiguation messages

At various articles of the kind like 1924 Olympics, I looked at them and I saw header dis-ambiguation messages. I corrected them to footer dis-ambiguation messages. There have also been several times in the past when I saw header dis-ambiguation messages. How often do people find header dis-ambiguation messages in most articles?? 66.245.115.34 23:17, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)

UK video art guy going ape?

Hi, RickK, I noticed you just put a VfD template on UK Video Art: The Early Years. I suppose those IP's in the history are all one person, getting different but related IP's assigned by their ISP? Anyway, what I wanted to say: 213.122.195.60 seems to be getting maddened by having that article questioned over and over, as s/he just subvandalously edited an unrelated VfD discussion, Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Peter Weibel, a number of times. Maybe it would be good to keep an eye on that person. Hard to do with dynamic IP's, though, I suppose. :-( Bishonen 23:33, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I will unblock myself every time I am banned by you because of your attempts to ban Michael. Next time, I will block you too. Danny 00:03, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Danny rick is not attempting to ban michael. Micheal is banned. Of course you will unblock yourself, but unblocking the IP will not stop micheal being banned. Theresa Knott (The token star) 00:07, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Vandalism

Please stop. If you continue to vandalize pages, you will be prevented from editing Wikipedia. Guanaco 01:54, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Guanaco apparently listed you on Vandalism in Progress. I have removed the frivolous listing. [2] [[User:Neutrality|Neutrality (talk)]] 02:54, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC)

More about, well, you know...

Four more Bandit stubs today. Joy. I am starting to warm up to the idea that we're dealing with the most bizarre bot in the history of wiki engines. Can someone in charge just forward proof to SBC and be done with it? I hurled some abuse on the proxy's talk page and two more still came in. I give up. If no one else can see what this ass-monkey is doing and refuses to do anything about it, I really have to consider just what in the hell is policy around here. I'm moving heaven and earth as a professional writer to get an article featured while this retard happily drops stubs all over the place while others mop up and defend his/her/its actions. Sheesh. - Lucky 6.9 03:24, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Michael, Me and You

Hello, I honestly don't blame you for reverting Mike, his contibutions are questionable to say the least, keeping close tabs on him is a good idea and I am doing to the same, although I do think there is some chance of reform in his case. --Comrade Nick @)---^-- 12:22, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC)
