I think wikipedia should have the most extensive "album" on the 2004 games, for future reference, and because of the importance of everything connected to the world itself, a thing that the OG symbolizes. Everything global is the obvious field of excellence of wikipedia, that I consider to be the first fully global service. Imo, every initiative in this direction, by the creation of relevant articles, should be encouraged, not thwarted. Range blocks

Hiya I saw you recent post at the village pump, and thought I'd come an teach you how you could have done it.

Firstly do a reverse DNS check to see the internet provider. If it's AOL give up. AOL is far too large, has far too many computers for you to ba able to block the vandal. You'll sucseed in blocking loads of legit users and probably won't get the actual vandal.

Assuming it's not AOL then proceed as follows,

64.12.116.10 through 64.12.117.22

Set the last digits to 0 64.12.116.0 ->> 64.12.117.0

do two /24 blocks 64.12.116.0/24 and 64.12.117.0/24 that will block a total of 512 IPs

Stick to /24 only if you are at all unsure about what you are doing. Note that /31 will block fewer than /24 and /16 will block a lot more. Never go lower than /16 ( I don't you you can in actual fact anyway) Also since range blocks catch innocents as well as vandals keep them short. Policy is 24 hours only I think.

You always seem to be under a lot of stress, what with dealing with trolls and vandals and people who just don't get it. Relax and have a cookie. You'll feel better (food allergies excepted). -- Cyrius| 06:18, 7 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Ulysses Disambiguation

You asked:

Hi. Why did you remove the disambiguation notice from Ulysses? RickK 02:45, 23 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I really do not remember doing that. I glad you fixed it. --chemica 02:03, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Sleepy Hollow as Steampunk

Sleepy Hollow falls under the steampunk category because of the wacky and far out equipment that Ichabod Crane uses. From his telescoping glasses to his numerous wire and pulley worked cutting devices, the movie is full of quirky little devices of his that in no way reflect the 1799 time period of the movie.

A film doesn't have to have a Nautilus (20,000 Leagues/League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) or a giant steam-spider (Wild Wild West) to be steam punk. It has to have technology unavailable at the time. If Van Helsing can sit in that list because of a couple of spinning blades and a rapid fire bowgun, then Sleepy Hollow fits in with its odd implements, and I will place it back, or you should also delete Van Helsing if the only viable definition of steampunk is a film with a huge mechanical monstrosity gallivanting about. Heck, they even have Bram Stoker's Dracula on that list, and all the technology in that film (Seward's phonograph machine, moving pictures) isn't steampunk, but real life things availabe in the 1897 setting of that film. If that passes as steampunk, then Sleepy Hollow definitely does. --Gnrlotto

You would think that college students would have read the rules of conduct before they posted these articles. I just drifted by VfD and they're all over the place! I guess we'll be staring at these for the next five days, eh? - Lucky 6.9 07:07, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Help in moving jpg image

Hi, RickK. Appreciate your work around the Wiki - we've intersected before on things Mojave Desert and elsewhere. I'm needing help moving an image User:TimShell placed erroneously into the Mojave Desert article. It's actually a picture of the Coachella Valley portion of the Colorado Desert, where it belongs (and I've discussed it with TS, and he agrees). The image name is "Image:MojaveDesert.jpg", which I'd like moved (if space and formatting permit) to the Colorado Desert article. Your kind consideration is appreciated! Happy Trails, --avnative 22:01, Aug 20, 2004 (UTC)

Yes, I think your instructions are what's needed to do the trick. Much appreciate you getting back to me. I'll be trying it out soon - to bed for now. --avnative

The moving of TV related pages

Please see User talk:Netoholic Mintguy (T) 08:41, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi. I've made a proposal on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (television) and asked that we restart the poll using more formal procedures and make it more publicised. Perhaps you would like to comment. I've asked Sean Curtain if he would like to administer the poll. I don't feel up to it myself due the my recent direct confrontations with Netoholic which has left me somewhat drained. Perhaps you might like to be involved in this also. Much appreciated. 10:03, 21 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I put this article up on Did you know? Tell me what you think, or if you can add to it. I think I got all the history right. Mike H 14:48, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

I have a number of good Donna shots from 1983 episodes I brought with me to Tampa, so as soon as I have the correct hardware, I will upload that, too. Mike H 14:50, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

As soon as the "Did you know?" thing passes from the front page, we can move the Donna stuff into a Donna Beck article. Mike H 19:10, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

The first 1983 episode I have was the fire at the cabaret. IIRC, Phoebe was throwing a benefit for "the children", and someone who wanted to steal all the jewels started a fire on accident. The baby was in the one room and Erica Kane was locked in another. Greg Nelson was in a wheelchair and had trouble getting out. Everyone was running away and Amanda Cousins was hysterical, because she couldn't lift him out of the wheelchair on her own. Mike H 19:12, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

Oh, and do you follow message boards at all? It has been heavily rumored on more than one that I follow that James Mitchell is gay. I've mentioned heavy internet rumors in articles such as Anthony Geary and Paul Anthony Stewart so this should be mentioned too, but I am not sure how. Mike H 19:16, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

SOAPnet, my friend, SOAPnet. Mike H 19:16, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

I have two tapes from Tad the Cad. One's here and the other is at home. I think the difference in the tapes is that I cut off the 2003 episodes on one tape. They aired one episode from 1983 (Tad makes love to Liza, Cliff sees Nina alive, and the Chateau burns down, and we don't know whether Erica or the baby will survive) and then another right after (Opal visits Jenny in New York and accuses Olga of pimping her daughter, Tad makes love to Marian when Liza is held up by interfering Mrs. Nelson). Then there are two from 1996 but they're not as good. There's confrontation between Tad and Liza and then Tad and Marian based on past history, but the other stories are REALLY dumb (bringing Noah and Julia back to life in Jamaica, blah blah Edmund and Maria are happy happy happy). The only interesting story from 1996 other than Tad was when Dimitri confronted Erica about cheating on him with Jonathan Kinder. Mike H 19:28, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

About the gay bit, as long as you clearly label that it's speculation but feverish at that, it should be fine. If you just put "James Mitchell is gay" then yeah, it would be wrong. The only out soap stars I know were past ones: Thom Bierdz and George Reinholt. Mike H 19:33, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

I never liked JR to begin with (I started watching when Edmund was set to marry Brooke in 2002, and the actor who played him then was HORRIBLE with a capital FUCK OFF), so the fact that Jacob Young makes me hate him is kinda par for the course. Plus, I never thought Jacob was a great actor. It's like, canceling out the value of a Daytime Emmy. He's hot, though, and I heard he was totally fucking the guy who played Nikolas on GH. Not Tyler but the other one. Hot.

Oh, and is this too POV? See. Mike H 19:51, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

Okay, good. I need to know how to reword it, because that was why she was hired. Constance Ford and Douglass Watson were hired for the same reasons. Mike H 19:58, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

It was actually in a book I have, called "All My Afternoons" by Annie Gilbert. It was first published in 1978 so it's probably out of print now. Mike H 20:01, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

More Donna

I watched the episode again and I clarified the baby's death. Donna didn't even know the baby was there. Mike H 21:02, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks.

Thanks for adding the image and the Snopes story to anti-American sentiment; the article was in serious need of some graphics and examples. Neutrality (talk) 22:21, 21 Aug 2004 (UTC)

List of fictional music groups

Hey, Jeff, your recent addition to List of fictional music groups has incorporated several non-viewable special characters. Can you fix that? RickK 23:10, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

I pasted a replacement for the TOC into the top of the article, but somehow the first two sections of entries got some (but not all) of their hyphens and apostrophes replaced with question marks (which only made it look like they were special characters). I don't know what could have happened. I used the standard Wiki edit window to do the paste. If I had somehow pasted over the relevant text, that wouldn't have replaced only certain characters. Oh, well. Whatever happened, I've fixed it. — Jeff Q 01:26, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Peace Offering

I really regret all of the misunderstandings we've had in the past. I guess my computer is in part to blame. Sometimes when I'm working on an article, it'll shut off by itself and erase everything. What I do is that I save the article half way and continue. I didn't that by doing this that the first half would appear as a new aricle. That's why it always seemed that I was reverting. About the Joaquin Phoenix thing, I honestly didn't know an article already exsisted. I learned that I must check first. One thing that I do admire about you is that you stand your ground and that's good. I've come to realize that you are a dedicated and serious person when it comes to Wikipedia. As for me, I learned not to be so hot headed and to look for advice before jumping into conclucions. I would like to offer you my hand in the name of Wikipidian frienship and understanding, so what do you say? User:Marine 69-71

Thanks

Thanks for that. Somewhere there is a typing teacher training people not to use space characters after their punctuation - just to annoy me, I think. But at least in the realm of operetta, that teacher shall not prevail! - Nunh-huh 05:38, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Medal count by Intl Orgs

This page seems to not be listed on the VfD main page, even though it's got a VfD notice on it (and a VfD page of its own). Since there are people voicing opinions (and votes) on the VfD page for the EU version, and few of them have also done so on the Intl Org version, I'm wondering what should be done about the situation. Any idea where to go from here? -- Mike J. 07:49, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Oh, I've seen that page already (and tried to make a case for deletion of both) - I was just wondering what was going on with the separate VfD page (and how votes on each page would count). -- Mike J. 08:00, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Viral categories

Hello, I've always appreciated your comments and reasoning, and I'm curious to see what you have to say about some categories that will both basically swallow up most wikipedia content under a classification system external to the subjects. Please take a look at Category:Dewey Decimal Classification, which I have also posted on Wikipedia:Categories for deletion and let me know if you think it's as bad an idea as I do. Then, when you really feel like you have a lot of energy, check out the categories on Standard Occupational Classification System. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm a little scared at the thought of fundamental articles such as actor and journalist being categorized under the likes of Category:Arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media occupations. Bellamy, Roman Salute, etc.

Hi Rick.. thanks for reverting those edits on Francis Bellamy, Edward Bellamy, Roman salute, etc. I came across that Rex Curry one day purely by chance while watching the RC's, he sure looks like a classic net.kook, eh? —Stormie 01:18, Aug 23, 2004 (UTC)

Punk music

Thanks for pointing out the punk music on Telengganu article, as I would probably have not noticed otherwise... Tuf-Kat 07:05, Aug 23, 2004 (UTC)

You made accusations in my user page and I gave my answer there. To sum it up, you spotted some technical flaw from my part to make an accusation of vandalism and put a warning that could lead to block me. I hope your intention is more to help, as can be expected of an admin, than to build a case so as to say "the guy was warned" at the slightest error or thing you dislike. Thanks in advance for your cooperation --Pgreenfinch 07:59, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Uh, that makes perfect logical sense. . . on Mars. RickK, an earthling, I believe is doing well in his actions. --avnative

Sure, belief is important, there were even some earthlings who believed the Earth was flat ;-)) --Pgreenfinch 12:39, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I'm ever so sorry! I do apologize! ;-)

But dude. THAT old...especially for someone born in 1985. It's in violation of my cardinal rule; never lust after anyone over 50.

Speaking of, I found a three-month old piece of shit left by out favorite Bandit buddy: Erica Kane. I really want to expand on that but I don't know where to begin. Thought you should know of its presence. Mike H 12:10, Aug 23, 2004 (UTC)

Johnnyjoe23 says that she left in 2003 and IMDB says the same thing, but I distinctly recall her final scenes with Viki airing in the last week of 2002. Then Bree Williamson took over in February of '03 with the snowstorm. Am I wrong? I may be. Mike H 21:31, Aug 23, 2004 (UTC)

Bernie Williams

Hi Rick, I have a question. I saw an article titled Bernie Williams. When I re-read it the other day I noticed that it had a redirect to "Bernie Williams (Born 1968)". I found that kind of strange since I haven't seen any other titles with the date of birth on them and Bernie's date of birth was already stated in the first sentence of the article. The User wrote to me and said that he did it because he didn't want anybody confussing this "Bernie Williams" with another "Bernie Williams" who doesn't even have an article yet. So, my question is: is it proper to title the article with the birth date? Let me know, O.K? User:Marine 69-71

Thanks for the info. User:Marine 69-71

User:66.123.255.100

Hey Rick- You've been around a lot longer than me and I was wondering if you had any suggestions for dealing with this guy. He's not responsive to talk messages, he makes thousands of tiny edits that are hard to track, and he reverts everything back to the way he wants it without discussion, including the inclusion of inkblotted to Yakko, Wakko, and Dot and Animaniacs. Any ideas? --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 02:23, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks, that was getting kind of frustrating. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 04:44, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)

IMDb relies completely on what people put in there. I still say it's wrong. Mike H 04:29, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)

List of Canadian athletes at the 2004 Summer Olympics

Why do you think List of Canadian athletes at the 2004 Summer Olympics should be merged into Canada at the 2004 Summer Olympics? Long lists are normally separated from articles. - SimonP 05:47, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)

It's redundant. Are you REALLY planning on writing an article on every single Canadian athlete at the 2004 Olympics? Why stop there? Why not write one on every single athlete at the Olympics? RickK 05:48, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)

In only a week we've made over fifty articles on these athletes, given enough time I'm sure they will all get done. Hopefully by the 2008 Olympics Wikipedia will have enough users around to world to have articles written on every athlete competing by the end of the competition. - SimonP 06:21, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)
If an American were to start creating article on every American athlete at Athens, we'd be accused of trying to Americanize Wikipedia. I see that every non-consequential Australian athlete is getting a sutbstub article. RickK 06:24, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)
That still doesn't explain the merge request. If you believe that Olympic athletes are not encyclopedic then list them or this list on VfD. -SimonP 06:31, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)
