Range blocks

Hiya I saw you recent post at the village pump, and thought I'd come an teach you how you could have done it.

Firstly do a reverse DNS check to see the internet provider. If it's AOL give up. AOL is far too large, has far too many computers for you to ba able to block the vandal. You'll sucseed in blocking loads of legit users and probably won't get the actual vandal.

Assuming it's not AOL then proceed as follows,

64.12.116.10 through 64.12.117.22

Set the last digits to 0 64.12.116.0 ->> 64.12.117.0

do two /24 blocks 64.12.116.0/24 and 64.12.117.0/24 that will block a total of 512 IPs

Stick to /24 only if you are at all unsure about what you are doing. Note that /31 will block fewer than /24 and /16 will block a lot more. Never go lower than /16 ( I don't you you can in actual fact anyway) Also since range blocks catch innocents as well as vandals keep them short. Policy is 24 hours only I think.

Just wanted to point out to you that I filed an arbitration request on this user, for (among other things) calling others Nazis in edit summaries and in one case on their own user pages. Pakaran. 04:17, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[1] I went straight to arbitration because the user was making so many personal insults, and seems to like the word "Nazi" even more than RK does, which while it may exhibit some talent, perhaps is not needed here. Pakaran. 04:29, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Don't worry, the AC will handle it I'm sure. They've stepped in on less blatent personal attacks. Pakaran. 05:44, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Vladislaus I of Poland

Stop moving things without discussion. You are trying to turn the English Wikipedia into the Polish Wikipedia. Why don't you go work on the Polish Wikipedia and quit your POV edits? RickK 05:22, Jul 22, 2004 (UTC)

He ings' ame ere ladislaus (n atin ersion) nd ładysław (n olish ersion). on't ee hy e hould rop he irst etter rom he ing's ame.

The kings' name were Vladislaus (in Latin version) and Władysław (in Polish version). I don't see why we should drop the first letter from the king's name. PolishPoliticians 05:25, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

There is a CLEAR temporary convention regarding name of Gdansk (Talk:Gdansk. You were part in this discussion, so you are aware of the conditions. YOU break the rules. So, please if you do not agree with them, please discuss it on Talk:Gdansk with other users. Regards.Yeti 23:14, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I come in peace

hey. I was hostile to you before. This time I'm keeping it chill. I was just seeing if you knew what I was referring to in the article. No big. I can't stop a thing from getting deleted. That's cool. You seem like a nice guy somewhere in there.

hi

why did u block me just now? Kzzl

michael? I don't get it

is it possible someone else is using the same IP??

hey

I think I got blocked because of someone else's bad behavior, after checkin out the blocked list. Can you unblock me? thanks, Kzzl

block

It is very serious to call me a polish nationalist and a vandal. Can you please explain yourself on my page or on my e-mail. Also you revert all my edits to the versions by a user who on the first version of his page placed a german nationalistic statement. Also, why did you revert my edit on Kiev? Why did you revert my answer to Burschenschafter? Are you taking sides without discussion? Or maybe you already have a strong opinion on every article I edited (what a coincidence) and instead of voicing it, you express it by blocking my account? Anyway, in the future I would like a group hearing before calling me a vandal, because ou're obviously biased. Thank you for understanding. Space Cadet 02:36, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thanks

Your kind words on my talk page really were appreciated. I'm returning, but limiting the VfD somewhat. See you on the main site! - Lucky 6.9 06:59, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Bowdlerism

It is exactly that, by definition. If it is unwanted trivia then it would be that also. But your unwanted trivia could be my essential research material. Paul Beardsell 23:22, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)

So you agree: It is bowdlerism. No, I am not going to do as you suggest. Are you going to censor every page with "nude" in it? Don't be a prude. Paul Beardsell 23:30, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)

That is your opinion. Leave the article alone. I think best to continue this on the talk page of the article as is customary. This comment copied from my talk page. Paul Beardsell 23:37, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I got permissions to add a screenshot someone took of the AMC opening, circa 1980s. I'm adding the same from the same group of people for OLTL and GH. Tell me what you think. Mike H 23:43, Jul 24, 2004 (UTC)

Pictures were also added to One Life to Live and General Hospital. Mike H 00:55, Jul 25, 2004 (UTC)

Huh?

I just got a message from this user telling me not to vandalize the wiki. I've never even tried to change anything, what the hell?

Your IP address is shared with others, it was maybe one of them that did it. Maybe you would like to create and account so your changes to wikipedia will be linked to your account not you IP? (Sorry to RickK for posting in his user talk, but I saw this on the recent chages page and could answer it, so I did)Pikpik 06:57, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Confucianism

Sorry about the edit there, no offense intended.

It is just that I know (of) Voltaire and I have never heard of H.G. Creel, so I can't help but feel closer to the former.. And I have seen texts that are blatantly US-centric, so please forgive my impression.

Drew Barrymore censorship

What is it, Rick, that makes you think you can ignore the general good accepted practice of this Wiki? If you want to remove information you should be prepared to justify it. Paul Beardsell 22:30, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)

RickK continues to censor without explanation or communication of any kind. Paul Beardsell 06:45, 26 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Good work

File:Herooflabor.jpg

I just wanted to thank you for the good work you do keeping the vandals at bay. Since you already have a barnstar, I award you the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, with all the privileges and responsibilities it entails. →Raul654 05:37, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)

Kegel exerciser

Hi Rick,

Perhaps you could explain on what basis you deemed my 'Kegel exerciser' article to be an advertisement ?? The article has now been deleted.

I have discussed the 'Kegel Exerciser' article with a local author (who has a Phd in Human Sexuality). To delete the article based on the opinion that it's an advertisement seems absurd to me.

Thanks.

Dlloyd 07:23, 26 Jul 2004 (UTC)

The 'Kegelcisor' and 'Kegel Exerciser' are the same article, which I wrote and has now been deleted. After writing the article as 'Kegelcisor' I moved it to 'Kegel Exerciser'. It was not an add. Didn't it occur to you to check with the article contributor ?

Please take a look at the "Votes for undeletion" page.

Dlloyd 04:51, 27 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Deletions If you were interested in your articles, you could join us at Votes for deletion to discuss WHY you think they should be kept, instead of just whining and making personal attacks. RickK 06:00, Jul 27, 2004 (UTC)

Rick,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I'm not making personal attacks here, just stating the facts as I see them. You deemed the article to be a product advertisement, even though it was contributed by a Wikipedia user and contained no links to external Websites. Fact. You did not attempt to contact me. Fact. Therefore the process to delete the article was based on your assumption that is was an advertisement. I did not join the 'Votes for deletion' discussion because I was not aware that the article was about to be deleted. If you look at the 'Votes for undeletion' page you will notice that one person commented that my article is of "nearly better quality" than the original 'Kegel excercise' article.

Dlloyd 06:19, 27 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I think I filled in the plot points quite nicely. I watched my tapes again and this is the conclusion I reached:

Nina eventually separated from Cliff, as she had fallen in love with Steve. Before going away on an assignment, Steve persuaded Nina to go away with him so they could have some time alone. Their plane crashed, and everyone in Pine Valley, including Cliff, had assumed Nina was dead. She resurfaced unscathed in 1983, but Steve was very badly injured.

Nina told Cliff that Kim McGuire, an associate of Steve's, had died, and she blamed herself because Cliff was close with Kim. When Nina said that she should have died in the plane crash, Cliff took her in an embrace and said that he just thanked God that Nina was okay. Cliff's new girlfriend, Devon McFadden (Tricia Pursley), saw the exchange of affection and ran off. Eventually, with her mother Ellen Dalton's (Kathleen Noone) urging, she left town to start afresh without Cliff. Mike H 18:10, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)

India

You wrote: Hi. I deleted External links relating to India because Wikipedia is not a link farm. Please don't create articles which only contain links to other websites. RickK 19:37, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)

I wasn't aware of this policy. Thanks for informing me. I was trying to curb the page site to recommended limits. Since few refer to external links when they view the page, I thought it would be apt to save it on a new page. Do you have any alternative suggestions on limiting the page size? PS (actually all the sites were official sites). [[User:Nichalp|¶ nichalp | Talk]] 19:58, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)
Actually, I was referring to the 32KB page limit. I was trying to limit the size to under 30k so that the 'page size warning' doesn't appear when you edit the page as a whole. [[User:Nichalp|¶ nichalp | Talk]] 20:06, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)

Dear Rick: Hi! How are you doing? I wanted to ask, why this revert war over Lori Hacking? You seem to think that I am saying her husband is guilty of the dissapearance, and I'm not. Im barely putting the information that the news has told us.

I, as a Christian, cannot judge people. specially ones I dont know. I've just reported what media outlets, such as CNN and Headline News and newspapaers etc etc have told us. I think it's important for her story to keep the details as far as what they are telling us, but in no way do I say that he is guilty.

Another aspect is that , inexplicably, you seem to want to leave out the fact that she is hispanic. This is important because uinder the last name Hacking, a lot of people would assume she is not Hispanic, and thats part of her life biography too. And, you seem to tend to assert that her husband was NOT guilty, by saying that he checked himself voluntarily to a clinic. I never heard that from any news. What Ive heard from all news-stands is that he was taken to a hospital.

Unless, of course, YOU are her husband and we dont know it ...long shot...:) just kidding, I know you wouldnt do such a thing.

I just wanted to stop this revert war and stick to the details the news people give us.

Thank you and God bless you!

Sincerely yours, "Antonio Mr. Mystery Martin"

Rick: I tried to solve this nicely with you, but it seems you are one of those "I am never wrong people". While you assume Im trying to make him look guilty, you ARE blatantly,, and against wikipedia POV rules, by the way, making him look innocent!!! Dont accuse me of the same thing you are doing yourself.

I only state what the news have said thats all. Show me, if you can, any news that says he walked to that hospital voluntarily? If Im wrong, I will accept it.

On the other hand, if they ever make a biography about you, I bet you would like them to write about your origins.

God bless you!

"Antonio Newsmaker Martin"

Dear Rick: Hi! I wanted to thank you for your job on the article. Now it looks fairly NPOV to me. If I sounded too rude earlier, I apologize.

I am glad we can put this behind us. God knows that I hate being in wars with other wikipedians, specially when our goal is to instruct others about important people, items and/or events.

Thanks and God bless you!

Sincerely yours, "Antonio Popular Girl Martin"

Honestly I'm not sure who it is. Please if you could put my user page on your watchlist that'll most appreicated :o). Anyway if you wish to discuss this problem offsite it could be arranged. Thank you for your time Rick. Comrade Nick @)---^---

Hi Rick! Thanks for nominating me for adminship, I really appreciate it and am proud to accept the nomination. —Stormie 00:11, Jul 29, 2004 (UTC)

VfD nominations

Good morning, Rick. If I understood your comment correctly in the discussion of Federal Republic of Western Niger on the VfD page, you said that you disagree with me about whether or not that page can be classed as a speedy delete. I do not want an edit war either, but I believe that this issue does deserve some serious and sober debate as a matter of policy. May I invite you to comment at Wikipedia talk:Candidates for speedy deletion#Overuse of speedy deletes? Thanks. Rossami 14:54, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Requests for comment/24.168.92.117

Hi. I've created Wikipedia:Requests for comment/24.168.92.117 (Keith Wigdor). I saw that you tried talking to this user on his talk page about his edits, and I was wondering if you'd want to certify the dispute. Quadell (talk) 17:30, Jul 29, 2004 (UTC)

Associated Press photos

We could use them if we got a subscription. With all this fundraising, it might not be a bad idea.

We could use them if we got a subscription.

No, we couldn't, unless AP were willing to release them under the GFDL. RickK 19:43, Jul 29, 2004 (UTC)

Unacceptable personal attacks?

Hi, I would gladly have apologized if I had attacked you in any way, whether "personally" or not. However, if you look again at Talk:List of Austrian Jews, all I said is that I think we should use our time more wisely. Did you draw up the template I called "nonsensical"? (I certainly did not check that, but quite a number of "countries" mentioned there are no countries.) Tell me what else is troubling you. All the best, <KF> 19:57, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Are you having fun yet? ;) - Hephaestos|§ 05:23, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC)

My username

It's an unoffical nickname for the University of South Carolina baseball team. The official nickname for all South Carolina athletic teams is 'Gamecocks', or in short 'Cocks, while the mascot's name happens to be 'Cocky'. The nickname refers to revolutionary war hero Thomas Sumter as well as the now illegal tradition of cockfighting in southern states. Yardcock 06:24, Jul 30, 2004 (UTC)

Ceqli language

If you look at the rules for undeleting, they say that not only should the entry be made on the "Votes for undeletion" page, but a link should be put on the VfD page. I've followed that instruction. See Wikipedia:Undeletion policy -- BRG 18:30, Jul 30, 2004 (UTC)

It says:

If the page was deleted via the Wikipedia:Votes for Deletion process rather than something that was speedily deleted, place a notice on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion with a link to the Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion heading for the article.

I thought I did just that. -- BRG 19:40, Jul 30, 2004 (UTC)

SF History

My apologies for cluttering your Talk page. I'm relatively new, so I may not have the editing etiquette down yet. If you have a moment, I would appreciate it if you could give me some brief feedback as to why I was reverted so I don't repeat an error that I should know not to make. Thanks. ffirehorse 06:17, 31 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I was trying to think of a way around what seemed to me to be POV language in the final part of that sentence. Nevertheless, you are right that the original information is more important, and I definitely should not have excised it. Thanks for the feedback (and for responding so quickly). ffirehorse 06:28, 31 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Speeches

Hmm. I find cutting the actual speech unnecessary and unjustified. I see no speech transcripts on Wikiquote. Other speeches on List of speeches also have transcripts. I also find ironic that you cut the excerpt but left the more complete transcript. This speech is an historical event. The very best and most NPOV way of understanding it is by actually read what the devil he said that day; to read the very words pronounced by the person. Cutting the actual speech is like, let us say, speaking of the way Churchill's actions were perceived by the population but never actually stating what the heck were these actions. Including the speech is like detailing the events during the evolution of the Battle of Normandy. I think cutting parts of articles, without warning, because of the Wikipedia-Wikiquote debate is an excessively purist way of seeing the Wiki projects. This page, as others, is not a simple transcript; it is an analysis of a historical event. And the only way to ensure rock solid NPOV is to provide to the reader the actual thing. There should be no such thing as too much knowledge. --Liberlogos 06:53, 1 Aug 2004 (UTC)
