Krishna Deo Prasad Nigam (born 1947), known as KDP Nigam, is an Indian researcher in the field of chemical engineering. He was a professor of chemical engineering at IIT Delhi,[1] then head of the department from 1999 to 2002.[2] One of his major contributions was to create a new lab for advancement of science, and which even today continues to contribute to the scientific community globally.[citation needed]

Early life and education

Nigam was born on January 1, 1947 in Kanpur.

He attended Harcourt Butler Technological University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1969, as well as a Master of Science in 1971. In 1976, he received a Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering from the Institute of Chemical Technology.

Academic career

Further, he has also worked on several promising possibilities to develop cleaner and greener technologies and energy-efficient innovative devices.

Over the last few years, the coiled flow inverter CFI technology has been researched by different schools for many applications such as micro reactors, continuous crystallizer, photo-catalytic reactors, intensification of Bio-diesel production and continuous production of nanoparticles. The University of Adelaide, Australia has proposed CFI for the extraction of metals on moon surface in the year 2020 and has been listed at NASA site as “Moon dust Tablet Space Mission” The device has attracted the attention of both academia as well as industry all across the globe. CFI has received a global attention which resulted in publication from 50 institutions across 18 different countries for different applications.

Nigam has made impactful contributions in the field of Science and Technology. He has done this through his numerous publications in prestigious international Journals, by writing books and chapters on Chemical Engineering, his collaborations with the industry to bring science to reality, his collaboration with several universities internationally, and through his students who continue to be inspired by him. He has been visiting Professor in many international schools in France, Germany, Australia, UK, USA, China, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Mexico. He was also Adjunct Professor at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada; at ISM Dhanbad and served as a Distinguished Professor at ITESM, Monterrey, Mexico.

During his time as the Head of Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT−Delhi from 1999 to 2002, the department saw significant growth in terms of funding for research, publications in prestigious journals, enrolment of doctoral students. His efforts were also seen in improving the infrastructure of laboratories, committee rooms, and seminar room.

Research, awards and honors

Nigam has been recognized for his contributions at several platforms.

He has been honored by several universities as well, such as Cambridge University (U.K), University of Saskatchewan, Canada and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy. He has large number of research co-operations and collaborations with prestigious foreign institutions.

Professor Nigam has published more than 230 research papers in peer reviewed International Journals which have received more than 9750 citations with h index of 55 (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=QrrpRZEAAAAJ&hl=en).

Personal life

Nigam enjoys life with his loving wife, Archana Nigam whom he married on December 8, 1973. They complete their 5o glorious years (Golden wedding anniversary) together in December 2023. Together they have raised two kids. Their son, Ashish Nigam was inspired by the father, and is also a PhD in Chemical Engineering. Their daughter, Roli Nigam is PhD in Management. They are blessed with a wonderful Son-in-law and Daughter-in-law, as well as three amazing grand-kids.
