English approximation of /lʲ/ is wrong

The current English approximation for /lʲ/ is "lean", but because most English dialects render /iː/ as [ɪj], the palatalization is very limited, making it invalid. A better example would be a word like "lewd". Masimatutu (talk) 15:00, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think it was Million awhile ago — but only for British speakers. Tacit Murky (talk) 10:48, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Tacit Murky The problem in words like "million" is that the /l/ is in syllable coda position, thus making it a dark [ł]. Certain English dialects do not pronounce the /j/ in "lewd", but it is the only example that works well, and several other examples have the same problem, making it quite consistent. Masimatutu (talk) 12:04, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's why it is an approximation. We have IPA for precision. And I couldn't find and words with «lew*» pattern, that guarantee to be pronounced with /lj*/ initially. We may invoke some dialect statistics, if there is any available. Tacit Murky (talk) 18:00, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Tacit Murky "lewd" works just as well as "newt" for /nʲ/, and is probably the best approximation for most dialects. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet_chart_for_English_dialects, although it does not show demographics, suggests that a great majority of English accents pronounce the [j] in the diaphoneme /juː/. Another good approximation that also works for accents that drop [j] in /juː/ would be "failure", as the [j] before the /l/ prevents velarization. Masimatutu (talk) 18:27, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, then be bold and make an edit. Tacit Murky (talk) 14:35, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ɵ English approximations are wrong

Neither of vowels "ɵ" (stressed/unstressed) do sound remotely similar to "foot" (which is purely "u"). 78.84.117.99 (talk) 20:51, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See [1][2]. Nardog (talk) 04:38, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, maybe I didn't point out. My grievance is with sounds in words "ма́чо" and "сёрфинги́ст". The "foot" example should be swapped to something like "goat". See Close-mid central rounded vowel.
The "foot" example would only makes sense for IPA "ʊ". 78.84.117.99 (talk) 11:42, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Я Е Ё Ю /ja, je, jo, ju/ combined sounds

Hello,

I have noticed that the sounds of Я Е Ё Ю aren’t on this page. I feel like they are distinct sounds of adding /j/ to the vowel sounds. Could /ja/ /je/ /jo/ and /ju/ be added?

Adding two sounds can also be seen on the IPA Arabic guide where they have a distinct sound with /aj/ and /aw/. This is why I think the sounds mentioned above should be added to Russia’s phonology. 2402:B801:2846:2400:20E7:38D2:4B24:58D3 (talk) 06:01, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's all there — see cite_note-7 . Vowel allophony is explained in Russian phonology. Tacit Murky (talk) 09:13, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There are so many mistakes here

No one says дж in Колледж like Ch in Chop It's more like J in Job

Don't mess up Г with Х, there are only few words where Г is pronounced as Х, such as Бог or Легко; in the most cases it's Г as is

And etc., that page looks wrong 94.241.236.162 (talk) 05:36, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
