Ukraine has been invaded or occupied a number of times throughout its history.
Ukrainian War of Independence
The Ukrainian War of Independence lasted from 1917 to 1921.
- Soviet–Ukrainian War (1917–1921): Soviet forces invaded Ukraine in 1918 and 1919.
- 1918 Soviet invasion of Ukraine, initial fighting from January to June.[1]: 350, 403
- 1919 Soviet invasion of Ukraine, the full-scale invasion in January 1919.[1]: 364
- 1918 Central Powers intervention in Ukraine: Imperial German and Austro-Hungarian forces entered Ukraine to push out the Russians, as part of an agreement with the Ukrainian People's Republic.[1]: 397, 403
- Ukrainian State (1918), the German-installed government of much of Ukraine.
World War II
World War II lasted from 1939 to 1945.
- Hungaro-Ukrainian War (1939): The Kingdom of Hungary invaded Ukraine and annexed Transcarpathian Ukraine.[1]: 518
- Governorate of Subcarpathia (1939–1945), an autonomous region including occupied Transcarpathian Ukraine.
- Operation Barbarosa (1941): Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union, of which Ukraine was by then a part.[1]: 513, 520
- Reichskommissariat Ukraine (1941–1944), the Germans' occupation regime.
Russo-Ukrainian War
The Russo-Ukrainian War started in 2014 and is ongoing as of February 2022[update].
- Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation (February–March 2014): The Russian Federation annexed Crimea, described by some observers as an annexation[2] and by others as an infiltration.[3]
- War in Donbas (April 2014 – present): Russian forces invaded Donbas in August 2014.[4] While many Russian soldiers withdrew in September,[5] multiple ceasefires were declared and broken in the following years.
- 2021–2022 Russo-Ukrainian crisis:
- 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine: Russian forces invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022.[6]
