Purshotam Lal (born 1954)[1] is an Indian cardiologist and chairman and director of Interventional Cardiology of the Metro Group of Hospitals. He has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan (2009),[2] Padma Bhushan (2003),Dr. B. C. Roy Award (2004),[3] and Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Medicine) (2022),[4] He specializes in non-surgical closure of heart holes (ASD/VSD), non-surgical replacement of valves, and treatment of multiple sclerosis.

Early Life and Education

Dr. Purshotam Lal was born on December 8, 1951, in Mansa, Punjab, India. He pursued his medical degree from the prestigious Medical College, Amritsar. Following his graduation, he underwent specialized training in cardiology and furthered his studies in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Professional Career

Dr. Lal is the Director and Chairman of the Interventional Cardiology at Metro Hospitals and Heart Institute, Noida. He has held several prominent positions in prestigious hospitals across India and abroad. His career spans over four decades, during which he has introduced several innovative techniques and procedures in cardiology.

Contributions and Achievements

Dr. Lal is credited with numerous pioneering contributions in the field of cardiology:

  1. Intravascular Coronary Stenting: He is one of the first cardiologists in India to introduce and popularize coronary stenting, which has revolutionized the treatment of coronary artery disease.
  2. Rotational Atherectomy: Dr. Lal has been instrumental in introducing rotational atherectomy, a technique used to treat heavily calcified coronary arteries, in India.
  3. Indigenous Stent Development: He played a key role in the development and clinical trials of indigenous coronary stents, making advanced cardiovascular care more accessible in India.
  4. Advanced Interventional Techniques: Dr. Lal has been at the forefront of adopting and teaching advanced interventional techniques such as transradial coronary angioplasty and laser angioplasty.

Accomplishments

Lal pioneered interventional cardiology, and introduced the largest number of interventional techniques (as an alternative to open heart surgery) in the country. Lal performed the largest number of angioplasties/stentings procedures in the country. After spending 15 years in the United States, Lal returned to India.

Lal has taught interventional cardiology for 20 years.
