24 - Aug: Shia Rights Watch sought international support to stop Saudi Arabian beheading of woman human right activist Israa al-Ghomgham as it can open the door to more executions for women particularly the women of religious minorities [1]& [2]. According to Amnesty International, the charges against al Ghomgham are political initiatives to silence conflict in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia and her death sentence would send an open message to human rights activism.   • 24-January:Foundation stone of Karbala International Airport being constructed by Copperchase Ltd., UK has been laid by Sheikh Abdel Mahdi al-Karbalai, a representative of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani and Chief Cleric of Imam Hussein Holy Shrine.   • Jan-10:Iran confirms that Saudi Arabia has invited Tehran like other Islamic countries to discuss arrangements for Hajj-2017. The Iranian delegation is expected to travel to Saudi Arabia on 23rd February this year to discuss the next pilgrimage. (The Washington Post) + (The News)
  • Reportedly, Saudi Minister for Pilgrims has scheduled to discuss with more than 80 countries including Iran for Iranian participation in this year’s Hajj rituals.   • 1-Oct: On Ist October & 30th Sept-2017 approximately 6 million people across the globe gathered in Karbala for observing Ashura. Shia Muslims around the world observe Ashura with the aim to express deep sorrow over the martyrdom of Hussein Ibn Ali and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH ( October 10, 680 CE). Ashura is not only observed in the Muslim world but also in Europe, Australia, America and Canada, etc. [5] [6] & [7]
Commemoration of Ashura is a national holiday in Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Lebanon and Bahrain. Also in India Ashura is a public holiday. [8] (ABNA)
This year in Nigeria Ashura mourning processions held in more than 60 towns and cities across the country organized by Islamic Movement in Nigeria.[9]
  • 2-Oct: Malaysian Government has freed 200 Shia Iraqi nationals, mostly Masters and Postgraduate students and their family members who were arrested by Malaysian authority in September-2017 on account of their participation in recent Ashura mourning. A former Malaysian ambassador has condemned the arrest of Iraqi Shia Muslims, saying this could court condemnation from the United Nations Human Rights Commission.[10]& (ABNA)

  • 10-Nov: Arba'een of Imam Hussain and his diehard companions was observed on 10 November, 2017 (including Arba'een Walk in countries other than Iraq) throughout the world in countries having population of Shia Muslims. Arba'een Pilgrimage was held in Iraq. It was estimated that 25 million would participate in addition to Iranian pilgrims. Different news sources indicate that more than 20 million pilgrims have attended Arbaeen walk/pilgrimage in Iraq from Najaf to Karbala on road by foot. Considering unofficial entries and 1-3 months old entries to Iraq, social media has placed figures highs from 30 to 40 million. However, Western/European Media reports estimates vary of the total attending from highs of 15-17 million [11], (Dawn), (Tehran Times), [12] & [13]

With reference to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif visit to Saudi Arabia and Iran from 18 January-2016 to defuse tension between the two countries, Daily Pakistan and Daily Jang disclose that Pakistan’s initiative for mediation between Iran and Saudi Arab have positive signals from both sides.
Chinese President will also visit the Iran and Saudi Arab next week. It is retrieved that China helped broker a landmark nuclear deal with Iran. After signing framework agreement, Iran became a founding member of Beijing-backed Asian Infrastructure Bank (Express Tribune). 17 July: After suspension of Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society and stripped of citizenship of Isa Qassim by United Arab Emirates, kingdom’s court dissolved Al Wefaq, accusing the group of harboring terrorism and its links with sectarian political parties.   • 27-Nov DSP Traffic, Faiz Ali Shigri, a Shia Police Officer killed in target killing, his driver and gunman were also injured.(Radio Pakistan) While, in another targeted attack on DSP Zafar Hussain was failed when guard promptly responded the terrorists in retaliation.(ARY News)
  • 26-Nov: Bahrain, demonstration was staged in Diraz village, some 12 Km away from Manama, demanding the immediate lifting of government ban on Friday Prayers. Protesters were also expressing their solidarity with Shia cleric Sheikh Isa Qassim.(Muslim Times)
