These documents are and have always been a part of the public domain, as are any court documents.

It represents the public domain testimony of a one Mary Walcott in a deposition that she gave at the Salem Witch Trials, Salem, Massachusetts on August 3, 1692.

She is also the author's relative, a great-aunt and sister to John Walcott (1666-1738), of whom the author is a direct descendant and a direct descendant of Capt Jonathan Walcott (1639-1699), her father and one of the Trial's magistrates.

It is entitled for the purposes of this website ...

"Deposition of Mary Walcott, August 3, 1692"

The author and relative of this person, Mary Walcott, intends for this image to be used solely for its original purposes: for education; and will severely frown upon its abuse such as taking the true meaning of the text out of context, forging the original text, or causing the original text to become irreparably damaged so that some or all of its meaning cannot truly be ascertained either by "over photography" or exposure to light or by "shuffling" the document(s) back and forth too often.

The actually "ownership" of the documents, however, for the time being remain with the University of Virginia or/and the Massachusetts Historical Society.

As the author can ascertain, this image was taken by way of scan of the original document, which is probably the safest method as opposed to the older methods of flash photography that tend to fade the images until they are obliterated.

Any questions about the image should be directed towards the Society.
