Summary[edit]
Description | In both the PNS and CNS, programmed cell death occurs predominantly when the young neurons contact their designated target tissues (e.g., skin, or target neuron). However, the regulation of apoptosis is different. (A) In the PNS, apoptosis of the developing neurons is prevented by survival factors secreted by the target tissues (blocking arrow), which counteract the internal propensity to die (curved arrow). (B) By contrast, in the CNS, target tissue–derived signals do not seem to play a critical role in preventing neuronal cell death (dotted arrow). Rather, the decision to die or not is primarily determined intrinsically (curved arrow). The signals involved in regulating programmed cell death in the CNS are not well understood. |
