Description
English: The photo shows the north gopuram and northwestern part of the Nataraja temple complex. Visible are the Shivaganga pool, the steps, parts of the Subrahmanya shrine, the Navagraha monument and several shrines that no longer exist, likely demolished during the late 19th century clean up and renovations. This photo was taken in the first half of 19th century, but neither exact year is known nor the author. The photo was published in 1850s and its negative held by the Museum of Contemporary Art, housed within the Government College of Arts and Crafts. The subjects of these photographs range from the hill tribes of Nilgiris to pagodas and monuments of the Madras Presidency to guns and antiques from Fort St. George.
