Popular press and trade authors first coined the term artificial intelligence “Superteams” in 2020[1][2]. These articles described Superteams as cohesive organizational teams combined with artificial intelligence (AI) that allow organizations to produce transformative results[1][2]However, these popularized articles on Superteams ignored a scholarly and academic definition of superteaming, testing of this concept, and its connection to closing the return-on-investment gap and increasing performance within business AI use (CITE).

Dr. Eric Demirjian was the first to academically define and test the concept of Superteams[3]. In his novel and groundbreaking original research on Superteams, he for the first time academically defined Superteams as the integration of high-functioning human teams with autonomous AI technologies that enable performance superior to human only teams[3]. The Superteam term is reserved for teams that are enhanced or otherwise augmented using AI to attain super-human performance[3]. There are multiple items that differentiate Superteams from other teams. For example, adding a human employee to a team is different than adding AI to a team. In this case, the AI helps the team become a high-functioning team (HFT) where its capabilities can be replicated across any number of teams to increase performance, whereas a human employee can be only valuable to one team[3]. Additionally, in Superteams, AI technologies augment human teammates with knowledge, skills, abilities, and capabilities that not only increase performance, but also moderate cognitive load, reduce stress, increase quality of work life, and add to team consistency.[3]

Finally, recent efforts by the DoD, DOT&E, and business to develop Superteams have been noted in the press.[4][5]
