Port Royal is a neighborhood to the south of downtown Naples, Florida. Developed nearly in its entirety by Chicago advertising mogul John Glenn Sample as an alternative and competitor to Palm Beach, Port Royal today is the home of numerous high-end housing developments owned by some of the wealthiest people in the world. Port Royal is also home to an eponymous country club.[1]

History[edit]

Port Royal was developed in the late 1930s by Glen Sample, a real estate investor, who purchased the land which would become Port Royal in 1938 for $50,000. Construction began in the 1940s[2]

Housing[edit]

Federated Hermes co-founder John F. Donahue purchased the home at the southern tip of Port Royal, known as Gordon Pointe, in the 1980s. Upon the deaths of both him and his wife Rhodora, the property was listed on US real estate markets for a record $295 million USD, one of the most expensive homes ever listed in the United States and attracting the attention of national media.[3]
