Nawaf Saud Al-Sabah is a lawyer, business executive, and member of the ruling family of the State of Kuwait. He currently serves as the Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer ^[1] of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), one of the ten largest oil and gas companies in the world.

Early life and education[edit]

Born in Kuwait on 5 July 1971 to Shaikha Awatif Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, daughter of the late Amir of Kuwait Shaikh Sabah Al-Salim Al-Sabah (ruled 1965 to to 1977), and to Shaikh Saud Nasir Al-Saud Al-Sabah, former Minister of Oil, Minister of Information, and Ambassador to the United States and United Kingdom,Nawaf spent his childhood in Kuwait, London, and Washington, DC. He graduated in 1989 from St. Albans School in Washington, DC while his father was Ambassador to the United States. He then attended Princeton University. On 2 August 1990, after Nawaf completed his first year at Princeton, Iraq invaded Kuwait; Nawaf took a one-year leave of absence to volunteer as a special assistant to his father, the Ambassador, at the Embassy of the State of Kuwait in Washington. There, he coordinated the ambassador's relations with the US Congress.^[2] After returning to Princeton, he completed a bachelor's degree in international relations, magna cum laude, at the Princeton School for Public and International Affairs in 1994. He wrote a senior thesis titled Preserving the Gulf War Victory: A Kuwaiti National Security Policy under the supervision of professors Richard Ullman and Aaron Friedberg.^[3] At Princeton, he was a member of the Ivy Club. In 1997, he earned a Juris Doctor degree with cum laude from Harvard Law School. He is a member of the State Bar of California.^[4]

Career[edit]

Nawaf began his career as a corporate transaction attorney at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, a major international law firm based in Los Angeles, where he served from 1997 to 1999. In 1999, he joined Kuwait Petroleum Corporation as Legal Counsel. He served as the head of KPC's Washington Office from 2002 to 2004, where he was responsible for developing downstream business opportunities and policy analysis in the United States. In 2005, he returned to Kuwait to become KPC's General Counsel. Additionally, he served as a board member of KPC Holdings (Aruba) AEC and MEGlobal, an olefins joint venture involving KPC's petrochemicals subsidiary. In 2013, Nawaf was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company, KPC's international upstream business. He held that position for nine years. In 2019, he was concurrently appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Kuwait Petroleum International, KPC's international downstream subsidiary that operates under the "Q8" brand. He held both positions until March 16, 2022, when he was appointed by Amiri decree as Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation.

Nawaf frequently lectures on the geopolitics of the hydrocarbons business, including delivering the GS Beckwith Gilbert Lecture at Princeton University,^[5] the keynote speech titled "Sympathy for the Barrel" at the Arab Gulf States Institute of Washington's Petro-Diplomacy conference,^[6] and a leadership dialogue at CERAWeek in Houston.^[7] Nawaf ranked sixth on Forbes Middle East's list of the top 100 CEOs in the region for 2023..^[8]
