Daniel Butler is an Irish Fine Gael politician, who served as Mayor of Limerick from 2021 to 2022. He previously served as Limerick Metropolitan District Mayor from 2018 until the office was abolished in 2019. He has served on Limerick City and County Council for the Limerick City West electoral area since 2014. He is the Fine Gael candidate for the 2024 Limerick mayoral election.[1]

Limerick councillor (2014–2021)[edit]

Butler was co-opted to Limerick City Council in February 2014, following the death of his father, Richard Butler, on 1 December 2013.[2] He was re-elected to the seat at the 2014 election, dedicating the win to his father.[3]

Butler served as Limerick Metropolitan Deputy Mayor from 2015 to 2016. On 25 June 2018, Butler was elected the final Limerick Metropolitan District Mayor.[4]

On 14 June 2019, Butler resigned after completing his term, with the office being renamed to Cathaoirleach of the Metropolitan District of Limerick.[5]

Mayor of Limerick (2021–2022)[edit]

On 30 June 2021, Butler was appointed as Mayor of Limerick by Limerick City and County Council.[6]

In August 2021, Butler opened a book of condolence to former Minister for Justice, Desmond O'Malley, following his death on 21 July 2021.[7][relevant?]

On 25 June 2022, Jerry O'Dea, who was due to succeed Butler as mayor, died suddenly at the age of 55. The election of the new mayor was delayed by a week following his death.[8] On 7 July, Limerick City and County Council elected Francis Foley as Mayor, ending Butler's term in office.[9]

Limerick councillor (2022–present)[edit]

In April 2024, Butler was chosen as Fine Gael's candidate at the 2024 Limerick Mayoral election.[1] The then Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Patrick O'Donovan, was appointed by Fine Gael as his director of elections.[10]

Personal life[edit]

Butler is married to Tania Butler, and they have two children.[11]
