Population numbers for North Korean cities: Korean-language articles vs. English-language articles

I have noticed that many English-language articles on North Korean cities cite population estimates from 1991. However, many of the Korean-language pages for the same cities appear to (I don't read Korean) provide figures from 2008 that are often significantly different from the 1991 figures. Will someone with Korean language skills please ascertain the validity of the figures on the Korean pages and update the English pages accordingly?

Any Korean speakers looking to team up for an easy GA? Her official website has several Korean-language articles and I was hoping someone could look into it and see if there is any useful information (her Korean name being a most obvious one). Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. They're all images, so Google is useless for me. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:56, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Human rights in North Korea‎

There has been trouble at Human rights in North Korea‎. Many of the references used in the article were quite outdated, and an ip editor with a strong DPRK point of view began vigorously editing. The ip was blocked for 24 hours but will probably return. It is quite likely the ip has made some good edits, but many are not good, and there are lots of them. User:Fred Bauder Talk 14:33, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It turned out that the edits were nearly all based on a North Korean document on human rights submitted to the UN which the ip was trying to use repeatedly. This was combined with systemic removal of contradictory information. The document is linked to and used in the article, including the lede. On return the ip continued the same pattern and was blocked for a week. The article continues to need attention. User:Fred Bauder Talk 12:56, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Korean Mellon

We do not have an article on Korean Mellons. My Korean language skills are only basic and would like to work with a Korean speaking editor to start an article about Korean Mellons on Wikipedia--Woogie10w (talk) 00:29, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rusk Document

Rusk documents

Japanese users (including Japanese "administrator" in english wikipedia) keep pushing Japanes POV on Korea-Japan dispute material. They keep deleting all cited material.

August 26, 1954 Another US State Department report seriously questioned their previous view of Liancourt Rocks (including rusk document) was based on legal and historical understading. Even this report mentioned about how wrong "rusk document" was.

This is important document to Korea-Japan territorial dispute. But Japanese Wikipedia users blanking its entire section. There reason are

Excuse me, Citing from 1954 US state department document is unreliable? US state department was personal opinons? (How about rusk document? document itself is entirely based upon personal opinon, no history and legal basis) not related to the topic ? It is hard to me because Japanese administrator deleting it. As a newbie of english wikipedia, it is too risky move against to Japanese administrator's completely biased editing. I need some help here. --Ejwcun (talk) 15:41, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not a Japanese administrator, I just happen to live in Japan. I've explained on my talk page why the additions are unacceptable, because the sources aren't reliable, the tone wasn't neutral, and some of the info wasn't actually about the subject in question. But let's please not have the discussion in 3 different places; if we could first continue it on Talk:Rusk documents, that will be easiest. Qwyrxian (talk) 16:45, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Station renames

Someone has gone through and changed the spelling on vast number of articles. Many I checked seemed flatout wrong. Someone needs to check these more thoroughly and potentially roll back all these edits.[1]--114.205.84.126 (talk) 07:56, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can you give a specific example of one? Is it the romanization? RR or MR? ₪RicknAsia₪ 08:51, 16 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please help with a Korean language problem

Although this problem is not directly relevant to this Project I'm asking for help here as WP doesn't seem to have a venue for asking for foreign language assistance. The problem is- someone recently added some information to the Sarah Baartman article. The last item in the "Cultural references" section mentions a piece of Korean music but the English is badly garbled. There is a link to a page on ko:WP which might help to clarify the information. Please help. Roger (talk) 13:04, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In August an WP:SPA started a few articles about the Shinchonji Church of Jesus the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony and its leader Lee Man-Hee. Both articles rely heavily (in the founder's case, entirely) on sources internal to the church. As noted on the Talk page of LM-H, another user tried finding sources on him and failed, though in fairness this might be a language issue.

Could someone who is familiar with Korean language and relgious/cultural issues offer any attestation as to whether this topic is notable? MatthewVanitas (talk) 14:51, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a foreign resident of Korea who thinks LMH and SCJ both deserve pages, but more objective ones than currently exist. There is a wealth of information about him in Korean, but more sources are popping up in the English-language media. They've recently pushed to go global, and Lee Man-hee is positioned to be the next Moon Sun-myung. To editorialise for a second, they are a powerful and dangerous doomsday cult. I'd offer more alternative sources, but I think it would just turn into a deletion battle with his followers. I'm not well-versed in Wikipedia policies, so if there's a way around it I'd be happy to know. Junganghansik (talk) 13:01, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The big issue is WP:Reliable sources; ideally any content should come from scholarly books from reputable publishers, or established reputable newspapers. That is, if "Cult Watch Monthly" had some article haranguing LM-H, that's probably not a Reliable Source. But if a major Seoul newspaper publishes an article on him, that'd be great. If it's going to be a contentious topic, you'll want rock-solid references. Though in English would be nice, it's completely acceptable to use other languages, just bear in mind debates might move slower since non-Korean speakers would have to go through another editor to get key points translated.
Aside from WP:RS, you'll want to scrupulously observe WP:NPOV. So "he's a dangerous cult leader" with a link to an anti-cult website, not going to work. However, a cite to a Seoul newspaper and "parliamentarian Smith of Sangju-mok labeled JM-H a 'nefarious cult leader' in a deposition to parliament regarding freedom of religion rights in Korea, on 28 April 2007" is quite useful. Ideally the article should be one that both pro and anti SCJ people can agree is factually correct. That is, even if they disagree with Parliamentarian Smith, they must admit that he did indeed say that. That sort of thing. Does that help answer your question? Please feel free to contact me on my Talk page if I can be of any help. MatthewVanitas (talk) 13:31, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Korean caste?

Editors on this WikiProject may be interested in the ongoing RfC on Talk:Caste. The article lists Korea as a region that has historically had a caste system, along with other countries, claims which some editors have found controversial. Editors critical of the current article have argued that the article has become a WP:COATRACK used to push the view that the caste system is not linked to Hinduism or India, while others have defended the article's portrayal of the caste as a universal phenomenon. The input of editors familiar with Korean history would be most helpful in this discussion. Was Korean society a caste? Is that a mainstream view and should Korea be listed?--Ninthabout (talk) 14:39, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A note on recent North Korean news

See "Exclusive: How Reuters Sources Keep Getting It Wrong on North Korea" September 26, 2012 "The recurring problem with the Reuters North Korea “exclusives” is that they lead to extensive re-reporting by major outlets, analyst responses, and on occasion, even comment by government officials and agencies", to say nothing of Wikipedia... Dedicated portal for North Korea

The Chinese Wikipedia has a dedicated Portal for North Korea zh:Portal:北韓. Shouldn't we have one too? WhisperToMe (talk) 20:00, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, although the talk pages serve the needs of the few who edit the articles using sourced information. I have to admit that my interest is not in Korea in general, although I love South Korean films; but in the strange regime in North Korea which, if you look into it closely, involves a very interesting history and set of contemporary situations. User:Fred Bauder Talk 03:50, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good to me. General Portal:Korea ; Dedicated Portal:South Korea , Portal:North Korea , Portal:Korean Peninsula (geography, biology, ecology, geology), Portal:Koreans (Korean language, culture, diaspora, ethnicity, genetics, mythology, religion) , Portal:History of Korea (history, prehistory, archaeology, anthropology) -- 65.92.181.190 (talk) 05:59, 28 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

China-North Korea border article

Hi! I notice there's no article on the China-North Korea border. Interestingly the French, Portuguese, and Polish Wikipedias have articles, but EN doesn't. WhisperToMe (talk) 01:11, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is interesting, particularly in the east where it turns into the North-Korean Russia border. It seems less porous this last year with a substantial decrease in unauthorized crossings; sure there is a story there if sources could be found. User:Fred Bauder Talk 03:53, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. I started a stub at China-North Korea border. I'm sure there's more that can be found to beef it up :) - On the Korean Wikipedia I asked a user if he was interested in starting a stub on the border. WhisperToMe (talk) 15:37, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Saving private Yang Kyoungjong

Hello!

Recently, I've wrote a small article on ru-wiki about a korean soldier Yang Kyoungjong (ru:Ян Кёнджон). However, I have heavily doubts, if he's really exist. Could someone help? All is needed is to watch this SBS documentary (2005) and write down brief contents (translated from the Korean). Just like this: ru:Обсуждение:Ян Кёнджон#Фильм SBS. Hopefully, it will help to know the truth.--Fastboy (talk) 20:57, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
