I just moved this to Jang Gil-ja as I believe that's the usual transcription? Are there any public domain images that could be uploaded? In ictu oculi (talk) 02:16, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Leaflet For Wikiproject Korea At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

4,500+ photos from Korea.net available

Hi all, after my contact Korea.net has kindly relicenced their Flickr stream for me, and there are now over 4,500 photos from South Korea available for usage in content. The photos are available at C:Category:Files from Korea.net Flickr stream. There are already a lot in use in content across numerous languages, so do make use of them in content here too. 211.107.37.79 (talk) 05:21, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Starl1ght Express hoax?

Need someone with more knowledge of pop music than me to check out an article: Starl1ght Express. The single source isn't about them, Googling the group name combined with names of alleged members in either English or Korean produces nothing relevant, and the creator tried blanking the page a year ago but got reverted. Any idea? Thanks, quant18 (talk) 00:33, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Seems like a hoax. Jaewon [Talk] 02:29, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Can anyone comment on this sub-stub notability in light of Wikipedia:College_and_university_article_guidelines#Notability? If you think it is not notable, please prod it. PS. Colleges (departments) within universities are very rarely notable... --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 20:29, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Prodded a few articles

I assume all active members have watchlisted Wikipedia:WikiProject Korea/Article alerts so you'd see it anyway, but just in case - watchlist it, and feel free to challenge my recent prods (I've decided to tackle few old entries at https://tools.wmflabs.org/bambots/cwb/bycat/Korea.html#Articles_with_topics_of_unclear_notability --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 20:45, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

YooHoo & Friends

Well YooHoo & Friends needs to be assessed somehow since I noticed people are just wanting to add info the bad Americanized version. Please if someone, do a thorough edit on the page.--BlackGaia02 (talkpage if you dare) (talk) 08:31, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Metropolitan/special city -- same thing?

Can anyone confirm whether http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q482821 (metropolitan city of South Korea) and http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7574799 (special city of South Korea) are the same thing? I'm working off of Incheon, which we have listed as a special city of South Korea. The Korean Wikipedia (ko:인천광역시) has it as a 광역시, which links to that other Wikidata page and calls it a metropolitan city of South Korea. Am I right in thinking these are dupe listings on Wikidata? Don't wanna have them merged when I'm not 100% sure as I don't speak Korean. Any help would be most welcome. :) Buttons to Push Buttons (talk | contribs) 08:14, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Special City (Only Seoul) > Metropolitan City (Incheon, Gwangju, Daegu, Daejeon, Busan, Ulsan) > (blah blah). I'll check WD soon. Revicomplaint? 08:32, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding WikiData, I see no error. Special City - d:Q7574799 is a administational group that includes Metropolitan city, so it's group of Special City, Metropolitan City, Jeju and Sejong. And Metropolitan City itself is about six cities. Revicomplaint? 08:39, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Korean speakers needed

Some Korean speakers would be needed to find sources for Seoul Metropolitan Subway rolling stock. In English sources are scarce, unfortunately. Thank you!! Teemeah 편지 (letter) 12:46, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pleas add information about this country to this articles.--Kaiyr (talk) 14:22, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Name in infoboxes

Is it really necessary in the name parameter to have both English and Korean? Hyuna, for example, has her name (in Hangul) in the lead, the native name and korean name infobox. Manual of Style for Korea-related articles doesn't have a standard on how certain articles should be and I feel like there should be one. Too many different styles going on in articles. Jaewon [Talk] 22:00, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Jaewon, I think it is unnecessary, actually. Since all articles have a separate Korean name infobox and it's in the lead, too, and oftentimes also in the infobox in a separate parameter at birth name. Teemeah 편지 (letter) 13:51, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable

As I am multitasking things, I forgot to create a list of reliable sources for Korea-related articles so feedback is need on these sites:

Anything of these unreliable? And am I missing any others? Jaewon [Talk] 16:05, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jay2kx:I've brought up the unreliability of Allkpop before, and the same criticism applies to Soompi. This is the post I made about a year ago:
Allkpop is an English, US-based K-pop blog published by 6Theory Media, LLC. Despite its disclaimer that it is a 'celebrity gossip site which publishes rumors and conjecture in addition to accurately reported facts' as self-proclaimed here, it is also the most trafficked English based K-pop news site in the world, with over 6 million monthly readers worldwide and 100 million pageviews per month, according to its website. There has been previous discussions about the validity of this site as a source, at the reliable sources noticeboard, best represented by the discussions: Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_121#allkpop.com and Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_125#Allkpop_and_Soompi, mostly with a consensus that it's unreliable. However, Wikipedians seems to trust and use allkpop as a reliable source. There is a somewhat significant usage of allkpop as a source, as seen in the following articles: A Pink showing 28 out of 67 sources; Sistar showing 28 out of 50; Miss A showing 39 out of 63. KJ Discuss? 22:21, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Kkj11210: Yeah, I know and you are correct, it is their only source for K-pop (Even I have a habit of using it until I find a replacement). This is why I included the sites before them to see who uses them. We need a consensus on what can be use so in the future, new editors won't use them. I was thinking of adding CNN, FOX and other news site (I was waiting to see what others say about these first.) Jaewon [Talk] 23:32, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jay2kx: Well, sources like CNN, FOX, etc. are considered to be reliable. Are you considering making the RS list about all sources or Korean sources only? KJ Discuss? 00:25, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Kkj11210: All sources if they can provide good information. Where do you go when looking for sources? Jaewon [Talk] 01:27, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jay2kx: Well, you know that WP:RS has the guideline for reliable sources, and WP:RSN is the noticeboard in which they discuss individual sources as reliable or otherwise. However, if you're making a list for new editors, I suggest that you narrow the scope to news sources that deal mainly with Korean material. A list encompassing the entire sources is going to involve every editor on this Wikipedia and will probably take an eternity to come to a consensus. However, a Korean-related list can simply be compiled and discussed on this Wikiproject. Regards. KJ Discuss? 03:42, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Kkj11210: I crossed out four of them but wondering about BNT News. Do you think it is reliable? Jaewon [Talk] 14:24, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Korean language report for Air China Flight 129 needed

I need to know where to find the Korean language report of Air China Flight 129. There is an English version but it states that in case of any conflict between the Korean and English versions, the Korean has supremacy. WhisperToMe (talk) 12:46, 23 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@WhisperToMe: Alright, it looks like you can view the files from here. You need an account if you want to download the files though. KJ Discuss? 09:51, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Holy cow! Thank you SO MUCH! I am going to immediately link to this file from the English, Chinese, and Korean Wikipedias. Now, how would I get an account for the download? I wonder if I can use http://webcitation.org to make a permanent archive of this file WhisperToMe (talk) 09:55, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@WhisperToMe: You start registering from here. It's not too difficult to register - you don't need to prove you're a Korean citizen or anything - but I think you do need a working Korean phone number. On a side note, I just registered and downloaded the file, though it's in NAPDF form. I don't think you can make an archive, since it seems as if the file can only be viewed by using the flash player, but I'm not sure. KJ Discuss? 11:45, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately I don't have a Korean phone number. Is there a "Burner" or a way to get a temporary one? WhisperToMe (talk) 14:45, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@WhisperToMe: Not sure, but do you want me to send you the file I have? It's just a copy of the file you already see on the site though. KJ Discuss? 22:31, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, please! I would like to have the file itself. Thanks! WhisperToMe (talk) 01:33, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Got the file! I wonder how to convert it from NAPDF to PDF? WhisperToMe (talk) 17:50, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Manual of Style for Korea-related articles

I am looking for feedback to expand Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Korea-related articles after looking at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/China-related articles and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Japan-related articles. The plan is to add sections about Hatnote and introductory sentence. The last big chunk of expanding before myself and Quant18 was in 2007 by YooChung. Jaewon [Talk] 17:05, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I want to try adding a section for formatting sources. Let me work on it a bit and I'll try adding it. KJ Discuss? 04:42, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I'll see if anything else needs adding. Jaewon [Talk] 14:50, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There's a point that needs to be agreed upon. The Hangul spelling is usually mentioned in the introductory sentence, but the inclusion of Hanja varies according to article. Right now, MOS:KO holds that:

For articles that do not use infoboxes, the general rule is to transcribe a name or word into Hangul only once, at the first mention

Can we change this so that the introductory sentence includes Hangul, Hanja, and the IPA variations in the introductory sentence? So kind of like Goguryeo. KJ Discuss? 11:27, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I agreed with that change. Jaewon [Talk] 12:56, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable sources in need of feedback

The talk page of reliable sources is in need of feedback especially from those who are familiar with the sites. Thanks. Jaewon [Talk] 18:31, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
