Revision as of 21:58, 14 January 2023

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sportspeople. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sportspeople|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
Note that there are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove links to other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sportspeople.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

Nominator's rationale: No evidence that this person was notable or was their disappearance. I also can't find any additional coverage about this person, and their article is just a mere stub as well. Davidgoodheart (talk) 06:12, 14 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete unless somebody can find significant coverage of this person in independent, reliable sources. His canoing accomplishments fail to establish notability and the anecdote about his disappearance is unreferenced. I completed a good faith Google search and found nothing about this person, although a few other people share his name. Cullen328 (talk) 07:23, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As playing in an WP:FPL is no longer relevant in terms of notability, I can't see a reason to keep this article. Fails WP:SPORTBASIC and WP:GNG. No hits in Google News or ProQuest. The result was delete. The "keeps" are largely based on the slew of references provided early on in the discussion; however, nobody arguing to keep has presented evidence here as to how these sources constitute WP:SIGCOV. The argument that interviews are admissible is an oversimplification; interviews may count toward GNG when they have intellectually independent content; that has not been demonstrated here. Clearly significant figure in local Algerian football with over 100+ appeanrces in the fully pro Algerian top flight as well as a 2017-18 Algerian Cup winner. Well, can you improve the article in this case? Currently it seems his achievement is 24 apps is Ligue2. Pelmeen10 (talk) 21:20, 14 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
According to soccerway.com, Niati played for CR Belouizdad during the 2016–17 season, but he did not appear for the club in any cup matches for which they have records (round of 16 or later), so it's hardly accurate to say he was a cup winner (even accounting for the fact you cited the wrong season). • Delete. Can we please ban Dasosmnezz from refbombing AfDs? These source lists he produces are always majority composed of exactly the types of sources he personally has seen rejected in dozens of footballer AfDs (Q&A interviews, routine transactional announcements, non-independent profiles), so even if on rare occasions there is a piece of SIRS SIGCOV, other editors are still forced to wade through and analyze a bunch of junk at every single AfD.
3, competition.dz is a Q&A interview: Red XN. 4, lexpressiondz.com is another Q&A interview: Red XN. 5, lebuteur.com via djazairess.com is a routine press release with no SIGCOV: Red XN. 6, elwatan.com is a handful of sentences reporting contract negotiations: Red XN. 7, lebuteur.com is details on an earlier transfer dispute that offer slightly more coverage but are more about administrative issues than Niati himself: Red XN. 8, dknews-dz.com is a routine transactional announcement: Red XN. 9, depechedekabylie.com has almost zero independent info on Niati as it is about the coach/management's response to player strikes in general: Red XN. 10 is another Q&A from the same outlet as 3: Red XN. 11 is a Q&A from the same outlet as 9: Red XN. 12 is a reprint of a very brief Q&A from outlet #7 hosted by outlet #5: Red XN. 11 is a post-game Q&A by outlet #7: Red XN. 12 from outlet #3 is a bare quote by Niati followed by general updates on JSMB that do not contain SIGCOV of Niati: Red XN. 14 is another Q&A from outlet #11: Red XN. 15, presse-algerie.net is entirely quotes from Niati: Red XN. JoelleJay (talk) 22:10, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Q&A interviews are admissible for GNG AFAIK.--Ortizesp (talk) 16:45, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
By "Q&A interviews" I am referring to those that provide little to no independent commentary by the interviewer. These absolutely do not contribute to GNG as they are primary and violate OR. All of Niati's interviews are of the useless Q&A format and so cannot count towards notability. JoelleJay (talk) 18:21, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
they don't count for GNG, they can be used to hang additional facts on the main article tree, but they don't support the tree themselves. Oaktree b (talk) 02:54, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep passes GNG per above refs.--Ortizesp (talk) 16:45, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak delete - Although Niati had a pretty full career playing football in the Algerian top division, I can't see any coverage that rises to the level of WP:SIGCOV. Most third party coverage focuses on two contract disputes (in 2015 and 2019) rather than detailing his career or achievements (This Algerian football magazine dedicates a single paragraph to the 2015 transfer dispute). There is plenty of superficial coverage (noted above) that doesn't discuss his career but rather focuses on a single upcoming or completed match or team training. None of this suggests WP:GNG could be met. If someone can find older (pre-2015) editions of Journal Maracana online, perhaps we would find more in depth coverage of his career there, but for now it's just wishful thinking. Jogurney (talk) 15:22, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, issuu.com has a search function and it's fairly easy to find older editions of Journal Maracana there. The coverage is generally routine from what I found (This post-match interview is representative). I'm not finding anything to change my mind. Jogurney (talk) 15:47, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep above refs are sufficient to pass GNG. I disagree with some of JoelleJay's assessment, particularly dismissing sources that include Q&A interviews along with some additional content. Frank Anchor 20:38, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Frank Anchor, what "additional content"? None of those sources contain sufficient independent, secondary commentary by the interviewers to count towards even BASIC, and certainly none of them meet NSPORT's strict requirements for a full GNG source, which has still not been identified:
3: JSMB midfielder Belkacem Niati has returned to his old team, after successfully achieving the goal of joining CABBA. Being among the last elements to have joined the workforce ... Docked during the resumption session on Wednesday afternoon, the middle of the JSMB returned to the Hammam Bourguiba course and the preparation that the players have made so far.
4: The master of the band in Bouakkez, Belkacem Nitai, who has already won this cup with the CRB...
10: Niati Belkacem, with his experience, goes in this direction by declaring that we will have to be patient and wait a few games, before being able to judge the team.
11: The CABBA defector, Belkacem Niati, had a first-class game against the RCK. Moreover, he was behind the penalty obtained in the last minutes of the match, giving the victory for the JSMB.
12: Against the USMBA, Belkacim Niati scored his eighth goal of the season, making him his team's best scorer this season.
13: The midfielder of JSM Béjaïa, Belkacem Niati, was angry at the end of the match which opposed his team to CR Belouizdad, yesterday, after the defeat (2-0) but especially the goal disallowed by the referee who played in favor of the Algiers. (This is really primary/non-indy as it is stating Niati's feelings rather than offering the author's analysis; at any rate, it's not encyclopedic content anyway.)
14: The technical staff of the JSMB will certainly rely on key elements such as midfielder Belkacem Niati to win the big derby the day after tomorrow against the MOB. JoelleJay (talk) 21:11, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My interpretation is that relevant content summarizing the interviews, however brief, is enough to get this particular topic past GNG. Especially when there are so many sources covering different aspects of the subject in this way. Frank Anchor 13:28, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Frank Anchor, as an interviewee's responses are indisputably primary and non-independent, they cannot contribute to notability, and per WP:PRIMARY only very basic info from them is permitted in a wikipedia article. This is outlined further in WP:OR, which includes interviews among several examples of primary documents. This has been affirmed in numerous biography AfDs:
This close statement: The result was delete. Interviews are primary sources so the delete argument is the policy based one.
    AfD nominations by admins
here: This article on a tattoo artist is sourced mainly from interviews. Being primary sources, they don't help us establish his notability. (A !voter further states The interview in the magazine - can't assess it.... So even if the [interview] contains a lot of independent information (doubt it plus a niche source), Rojas would not pass the WP:GNG based on what I found.)
here: WP:BLP of a radio personality and podcaster, referenced entirely to WP:PRIMARYSOURCES and Q&A interviews that cannot support notability
and here: There are interviews, and a number of performance listings but nothing independent
    Deletion rationales
here: So far I am seeing numerous interviews but little in the way of WP:SECONDARY sources.... I would like to see pretty much any of the people voting Keep put forth WP:THREE best sources (that aren't interviews) to demonstrate that this article is unequivocally notable beyond a shadow of a doubt.
    source analysis here
discussion here: The first and third links are short, primary source interviews. The second link is kind of nothing. Please have a look at secondary sources.
here: I disagree with the statement "...sources are in depth, reliable and independent. That a quote comes from her father doesn't make the source doing the quoting "not independent" in any way". The quote comes from Reem ("according to Reem...") -- this is the definition of a non-independent source. Interviews in general are not SIGCOV sources for the purpose of establishing notability.
here: The Ynaija interview only quotes Mr. Israel and does not add any independent research. As such it is effectively a self-published source and not verifiable.

Sources are brief mentions and he had a brief, brief career. Perhaps a redirect to the club? If this was an MLB player, I'd perhaps redirect to the 2016-2017 season for that ball club, but this soccer team doesn't have such extensive season articles. Oaktree b (talk) 02:57, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
He definitely did not have a "brief, brief career", he had over 160+ appeanrces in the fully pro Algerian top flight/second tier and was a 2017-18 Algerian Cup winner (see 17). Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 07:04, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - blatant failure of WP:GNG and anything else related. Those "sources" are just passing references and are not WP:RS at all: I can't stop reminding you all that quality is far more important than quantity when we talk about sources. Angelo (talk) 23:10, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can't find anything towards WP:SPORTBASIC and WP:GNG, his one game in an WP:FPL is no longer relevant. Best I can find is a passing mention in Nemzeti Sport, also derived from a Facebook post, Sport 24, which mentions him only once, and Sport.ua, which mentions him being a defender and having played 17 youth matches. Sport.ua is the best source but it's not good enough for SPORTBASIC. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 19:26, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

BLP with no acceptable sources. Best sources I can find are Ar Riyadiyah, which mentions him once, Time Kora, which looks like a blog, contains no in-depth coverage and is referenced to a Twitter page, Al Fiha, which is a basic transfer announcement that merely states his year of birth, position and length of contract and Al-Jazirah, which has only one sentence about him, confirming that he has signed a three-year contract. None of the above meet WP:GNG or WP:SPORTBASIC.

Furthermore, the article was created by a block-evading sock and has been edited by two more confirmed socks in Lilianasri and Gulfup. Some IP edits mean that this is ineligible for WP:G5 but the socking is still worth mentioning. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 15:24, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'd tend to support a redirect here - to either option put forward by the nominator. There's a chance more information comes up in Japanese language sources and this way we preserve the history and attribution for the page. Potentially fails WP:GNG and WP:SPORTBASIC due to lack of detailed coverage from independent sources. In my searches, the best that I can find is South Wales Argus, which mentions him only once. This club website mentions him being sent off in a match but this is routine game coverage and SPORTBASIC states team sites are generally not regarded as independent of the subject. Fails WP:NBASIC. Ref 1 is an one-paragraph announcement, ref 2 is a routine announcement primarily quotes, ref 3 appears to also be routine sport coverage, having only three short paragraphs, mostly quotes, ref 4 is a five-sentence announcement, whereas ref 5 is slightly longer, but also leans on the routine side, mainly mentioning stats and injuries, and is debatably non-trivial. My WP:BEFORE found sources such as interview, mention, and short/routine coverage, e.g., 1, 2, 3, but I don't think they meet WP:SPORTSBASIC. My search for the Greek name didn't find much meeting SIGCOV as well, so I purpose a redirect to VfB Stuttgart (please ping me if more substantial coverage are found).

The notability of this has been discussed at User talk:Ortizesp#Thomas Kastanaras and Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Football#User_turns_articles_into_redirects_without_any_discussion regarding a draftification by Onel5969. • Delete. I can't believe we're all looking at the same five sources and same BEFORE. None of the five applied sources directly details anything other than the routine sports news associated with specific events and contract negotiations. The subject is inarguably verified. I just don't see any compelling case made or proven that the subject is any more notable than any other paid teen-aged football player. The subject fails significant coverage at GNG and in no way meets SPORTSBASIC. This is a redlink on a team template and as such doesn't in any way constitute a compelling need to violate BLP. BusterD (talk) 00:42, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - clearly none of the sources is anything but routine sports coverage. Fails WP:GNG.Onel5969 TT me 01:21, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, per the nom's well-reasoned argument and extensive BEFORE. The sources are the same kind of UNDUE routine transactional coverage rejected in dozens of AfDs; at this point it should be clear they are not acceptable for SPORTBASIC and it's disruptive for editors to keep insisting they're SIGCOV. JoelleJay (talk) 06:28, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Changing to Draftify, as I didn't read the dates of the sources till now. The coverage is still mostly non-encyclopedic and marginal, but as there is the potential for SIGCOV in the near future I think it's appropriate to draftify. JoelleJay (talk) 22:05, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

He's only played a handful of minutes in the Bundesliga, so it's hardly surprising that the coverage isn't there yet - it's just WP:TOOSOON. Jogurney (talk) 18:42, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete: Fails WP:NBASIC as likely WP:TOOSOON. Trivial coverage does not advance notability. Not opposed to Redirect to VfB Stuttgart as an ATD. Sources that mention things like the subject "receives a professional contract" (#1), "Kastanaras extended until 2025" (#2), "This is how Pellegrino Matarazzo is planning Kastanaras with Thomas" (#3), "Kastanaras celebrates Bundesliga debut" (#4), "Bundesliga debut: Kastanaras is said to give VfB “a lot of joy”" (#5), are just routine coverage, and does not provide significant coverage. Of the two sources mentioned by Nfitz #1-), "That's why Thomas plays Kastanaras with a hole in his shoe". He has an injury and unless someone has a crystal ball could be very serious, #2-)"VfB offspring in Marbella: This is how Egloff, Kastanaras, di Benedetto & Co.", states the subject "could soon become VfB's number two striker". He is not in the starting XI. All of these fall far short of satisfying the criteria for inclusion. In fact, aside from the subjects name and when born there is only mention of his sports accomplishments (there are other venues for resumes), that tilts the article to a pseudo biography. There is nothing to present a "full and balanced biography". -- Otr500 (talk) 21:47, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Draftify per lack of current WP:GNG which is likely gonna be overcome at some point in the future - WP:TOOSOON. It can be expected the subject to probably become notable anytime soon, he just isn't right now. Angelo (talk) 23:12, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Based on Google News and DDG, looks to fail WP:GNG and WP:SPORTBASIC comprehensively. Best sources are HAON, which confirms that he is a defensive midfielder and that he is going on a loan, Nemzeti Sport, which is just a list of transfers/loans, and Rangadó 24, which mentions him twice in passing, regarding being released from a club - Kazincbarcikai SC. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 20:59, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Better than anything that I found but the issue with Q&A articles like this is that they contain little that we can build a meaningful biography from. Burics' views on a match or series of matches doesn't mean much to an encyclopaedia reader. I can't think of any good reason as to why they'd use that ghastly font colour either. I had to drag my mouse over the text just to read the cursed thing! So much for trying to make semi-pro Hungarian football accessible! Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 23:19, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Badly sourced BLP on a semi-pro footballer/futsal player with nothing to contribute to WP:GNG or WP:SPORTBASIC. A Hungarian source search yielded some sources which I will analyse. ZAOL mentions him once in the main text, confirming that he is the top scorer of the Western Division of the second tier of Hungarian futsal. Not much of a claim to notability there. Kanizsa Újság is a local Nagykanizsa-based paper which mentions Bogyó a few times in the match report. Zala County's Zala Sport also has some match report coverage of amateur futsal that mentions him a few times. I can't find anything better than these match reports so there is no reasonable opportunity to build a biography for Bogyó. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 20:50, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Article created after playing 9 mins of professional football 7 years ago. Searches in Thai yielded a reasonable number of hits but nothing that seems to demonstrate WP:SPORTBASIC or WP:GNG. The best ones that I could find were Thsport, a basic transfer announcement, Ballthai, which is mainly copied from a fan site and Samarnsin's Facebook page, and Ballthai 2, which confirms that he was man of the match in a semi-pro third tier game. This is not a notable enough achievement for a stand-alone article. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 19:32, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: The transfer coverage in SMM Sport[18] and SuperSub Thailand[19] do profile his career in a bit more detail (born 1992 in Rayong, plays midfield, became noticed from Assumption College Thonburi school team, joined Muang Thong Utd Academy, loaned to Phuket (2013), Nonthaburi (2014), Air Force (2015), joined Muang Thong's senior team in the 2016 season, first match on 20 August, loaned to Nakhon Pathom following year, transferred to Army Utd in 2018, Customs in 2020, Songkhla in 2021). Not sure if that counts as in-depth. Pinging GiantSnowman per request. --Paul_012 (talk) 08:53, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In my view, these are just a prose version of the data listed on his Transfermarkt profile, which has his DOB, birthplace and history of loans and transfers on there. In fact, it's entirely possible that the SMM and SuperSub sources themselves might even be derived from looking at the database websites that feature this footballer. If it elaborated on his career a bit more in either article, then I'd be tempted to change my mind about the AfD but, as it's generally expected for transfer announcements to list former clubs of the player, I don't think we need a Wikipedia article for every footballer that has this type of coverage, otherwise we'll have an article on almost every single footballer that transfers between pro or semi-pro clubs and, in my view, the bar for notability would be too low. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 11:10, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We also dismissed similar coverage at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Yannasit Sukchareon although I appreciate that there wasn't huge participation. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 11:39, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
SMM and SuperSub sources are from local teams and local media. There is no way they get news from German website. SMM was even a public listed company under ticker name SMM until it made a backdoor listing deal with STARK. Other than sports, SMM is also a major manga publisher in Thailand [20]. SuperSub is just an online sport news website. --Lerdsuwa (talk) 03:44, 14 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. Thanks for that, I've now struck the offending statement. My point still stands regarding the depth of the coverage, though, and that it doesn't go beyond what a typical database site would say about a footballer, even though it does it using prose rather than tables and stats. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 11:42, 14 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Despite playing one minute or so of professional league football, doesn't seem to be notable per WP:SPORTBASIC and WP:GNG. The former guideline asks for at least one reference to a source providing significant coverage of the subject, excluding database sources, which we do not have here. We don't even have clear confirmation of his date of birth or position. The only source I can find in Arabic searches about a footballer called 'Fahad/Fahd Abdullah' is Kooora, which has very low standards for inclusion and does not confer notability. Oppose merge/redirect due to how common his name is in the Arabic-speaking world and due to lack of an obvious target. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 16:43, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Footballer had very brief professional career but has spent most of his career as a semi-pro with seemingly little coverage. The Belarusian Wikipedia article has some sources but they fail to show WP:GNG and WP:SPORTBASIC. Pressball is a trivial mention in a quote from his coach. Football 1 is a brief transfer announcement, which appears to be sourced to his club's website. In any case, the coverage is too weak for GNG. Football 2 is sourced to Twitter and is only routine sports coverage. In my own searches in Russian and Belarusian, all I can find is Sportnaviny, another very brief transfer announcement, and some Wikipedia mirrors. • @GiantSnowman: searched his full name and found something of a scandal around his signing with FC Anzhi Makhachkala [27] [28]. "Anzhi Makhachkala's Europa League bonuses at risk over William transfer" - Anzhi's conduct in signing Brazilian forward William Arthur Conceicao dos Santos in April 2010 was "unethical and unlawful," Onsoccer director Antonio Araujo said in a written statement to the Associated Press. William spent less than one month as an Anzhi player before returning to Portugal when officials ordered him from the team hotel in Moscow at 3 a.m. before a match, according to a ruling when CAS first judged the dispute last year. "We had no other choice than (recourse) to the Swiss courts in order to freeze the monies that Anzhi is entitled to receive from UEFA, via the Russian Football Association," Araujo said. ::* Keep. The fight ranking of the subject is not as relevant as the veracity of the citations. It's verifiable that the person is a successful professional mixed martial artist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JRed176 (talk • contribs) 18:05, 11 January 2023 (UTC) - WP:SOCKSTRIKE Beccaynr (talk) 23:57, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • It doesn't matter at all that information is verifiable; NSPORT requires the subject to have received SIGCOV in secondary independent RS, which has so far been lacking. JoelleJay (talk) 20:51, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JRed176: What citations verify that the subject is "successful"? I verified he failed WP:NMMA based on his inability to meet top the 10 rankings required, and the only two citations in the article that aren't databases, are about him being knocked out cold by Uriah Hall. ♡RAFAEL♡(talk) 18:25, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is the fight record on the right side not accurate? JRed176 (talk) 18:30, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JRed176: His record is 9 wins and 9 losses, with only one victory in a notable promotion. How is that an indication of being successful? ♡RAFAEL♡(talk) 18:35, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If he were a baseball player, batting 500 would be stellar. It is not a losing record. Does Wikipedia only grant notability to those with winning records? I don't believe so and there was the one notable victory. I wouldn't say the subject is unsuccessful overall. What is more, it is not a final record. He is still competing. JRed176 (talk) 18:38, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete He fails to meet the notability criteria for MMA fighters and lacks the significant independent coverage to meet WP:GNG. Databases do not show notability. He competed at the 1972 Olympics but did not rank high enough to win a medal and I couldn't find other significant competitions that he had participated in. Could be redirected to Archery at the 1972 Summer Olympics – Men's individual. Suonii180 (talk) 10:09, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Redirect I think, unless editors such as Paora can find any additional sources? There are a few sources out there and a hint that there's probably coverage in paper-based news media sources (at least one photo with caption that's clearly from a newspaper). The difficulty will be accessing those sources as they're unlikely to have been digitised. Redirection could either be to the event or to New Zealand at the 1972 Summer Olympics - I think I'd probably favour that over the event but I don't have any overwhelming preference. On the whole though I'd say the chances are that sources exist, so a redirection is probably preferable if those sources can't be found. Blue Square Thing (talk) 11:21, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: @Blue Square Thing: Photo with caption appears to have come from the Gisborne Photo News monthly serial, which happens to have been digitized, specifically the February 1971 Issue (#200), page 37. Quite often, young players that debut are on an upward trajectory. There are, of course, plenty that play a game or two then disappear, as we both know. If the subject does become notable in the near future, it would be easier to update the draft than to create something from scratch or ask the deleting admin to restore to user space or equivalent. I'm not too fussed either way as I accept that the subject isn't notable so deletion is not unreasonable. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 23:01, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result was keep. It's of course agreed that rivalries are not presumed notable, but to the extent there is debate about significant coverage and reliable sourcing, there is a rough consensus that, for this particular rivalry, enough coverage exists for retaining the article. In particular, there isn't much of a direct rebuttal to the sourcing that explicitly discusses the rivalry. I feel a redirect to the List of tennis rivalries would constitute a !supervote given the weight of the arguments here, as viewed through the lens of policy. Per tennis project and Wikipedia guidelines, this is not a legitimate article-worthy rivalry. If it's a rivalry : According to WP:NRIVALRY, rivalries are not inherently notable. "We can only have articles about tennis rivalries if there is significant media coverage about the rivalry. For example, great rivalries like Agassi–Sampras or Federer–Nadal warrant an article, but articles about rivalries like Agassi–Rafter and Federer–Hewitt have been deleted by the community. Tennis is a sport where closely ranked players wind up playing a lot... it's inherent. This is not a rivalry that the press talks endlessly about like Federer vs Nadal or Laver vs Rosewall. If in doubt, consult Wikiproject Tennis before creating a new rivalry article." Fyunck(click) (talk) 20:06, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - There does seem to be significant coverage from multiple reliable sources about this rivalry which are already in the article. Specifically these sources - [33], [34], [35], [36] - all describe this as a rivalry and discuss it in some depth (i.e., go beyond listing stats/match results). There is also [37] which I can't access because of a paywall but looks promising. WJ94 (talk) 20:53, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Hi, creator of the article here. I wrote to the nominator earlier today on the talk page, explaining with sources how the article meets GNG, and I had hoped to continue any discussion there, though I could've been clearer about that. [I won't suggest a merge myself – I think the article stands alone well – but considering that option is to me much preferable to nominating for deletion (!).] Anyway, want to mention I'm not under the illusion that Medvedev–Tsitsipas is at all as "great" (nominator's word) as Federer–Nadal, but that's a really high bar. And there is of course a lot of routine coverage of Med–Stef matches, but (as WJ94 noted) there's also more than that. Here are a couple more sources not currently cited that show the importance/uniqueness of Med–Tsitsipas: [38] ("closest thing we have to a blood feud"), [39], [40] (Med: "Every match against Stefanos is kind of special"). Hameltion (talk, contribs) 21:47, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And as I pointed out, rivalries/head-to-heads are inherent in the sport. That doesn't mean we create a rivalry page for every two players. We try to create rivalry articles for truly great massive press reported rivalries. Evert-Navratilova for one. Graf-Seles is another. Otherwise a section on the players articles in question is most always the best option. Most created rivalry articles get deleted once the general wikipedia populous looks closely at the situation. Most head-to-head confrontations don't even warrant a mention on an individual player's article... a few head-to-heads (like Hewett-Federer) get a paragraph on the player's article showing it is more significant than their other head-to-heads... and a very few turn out to be rivalries that highlight the sport in question and deserve a stand-alone rivalry article. You can always bring an Rfc to the Tennis Project and WP:NRIVALRY to change the Tennis Project guidelines on rivalries. Maybe this one is a really unique professional tennis head-to-head, but I'm not convinced. Fyunck(click) (talk) 22:57, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fyunck(click) - No one is suggesting that this rivalry has inherited its notability; the argument is that the rivalry has received significant coverage in multiple reliable sources. We don't need an RfC on this because what is being discussed is the general notability guideline, and no Wikiproject can overturn a a generally accepted guideline like GNG (WP:CONLEVEL). In any case, the guidance you link to refers back to WP:NRIVALRY which just refers back to the WP:GNG - and the point being made here is that this rivalry does meet the GNG. You say that we only create articles for truly great massive press reported rivalries, but how do we deice which rivalries are truly great? The only way Wikipedia has to decide this is through an evaluation of reliable sources (i.e., the GNG). Sufficient reliable sources which give significant coverage to this rivalry have been provided. If you still think the article should be deleted, please explain why you believe the sources provided in the article and by Hameltion do not constitute significant coverage. WJ94 (talk) 10:15, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That is a big difference between talking about a rivalry between a couple players where it is notable enough to add to an individual's article. We may know Serena Williams show size and have it sourced multiple times but we don't add it to her article. Likewise we may see some sources that mention a rivalry but again that doesn't mean it always gets added to an individual article... we may have undue weight to deal with. If we do find enough then adding to the individual article where it is more likely to be kept updated is the best place to put that notable info. It is a huge step to say it's notable compared with jumping on an individual stand-alone article. What has been created is better served on these individual player bios... probably with a collapsible head-to-head. This is not worthy of an individual article at this time. The small amount of sourced data at best should be merged and at worst removed imho. We'll see what other think in the next few weeks of interest. Fyunck(click) (talk) 10:26, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Redirect it to the List of tennis rivalries article. And when the necessary conditions are met for said rivalry to be in the table, remove the redirect and you should be good to go. Qwerty284651 (talk) 16:02, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I can agree with the redirect but almost none of the rivalries listed on List of tennis rivalries have their own article. Just a very few. Even if this makes the list it would not warrant a stand-alone page, so we wouldn't remove the redirect. Fyunck(click) (talk) 19:29, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Not all, but some do have, those which are most noteworthy aka meet WP:GNG at the very least with rivalry articles of their own. Qwerty284651 (talk) 17:07, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Declined 3 times in draft space then moved over to mainspace with no improvement. Subject is a semi-pro footballer with no significant coverage cited. The 2nd reference is archived here but only mentions the subject twice and it's only a basic match report. Only other sources that I can find in my WP:BEFORE search are database sites like Soccer Punter. Footballers need to meet WP:SPORTBASIC or WP:GNG and Khoury demonstrates neither as he only has database coverage and trivial mentions. He wouldn't have met the old notability standards based on professional play either. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 10:27, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - I think the characterisation of the Dritare source as "bloggy" is a bit harsh! It's listed at List of newspapers in Albania as an online news portal and when I googled it there was various Linkedin pages for its journalists, so it's run to professional standards. Cielquiparle is right that some editors do try to disallow interviews but that's always been bunkum, frankly. I'm not too sure why the TV interview source is being discounted either? Looks okay coverage to me, albeit I dunno exactly what's being said. Bring back Daz Sampson (talk) 14:16, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good to me! Cielquiparle (talk) 14:30, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Interviews that don't provide any significant secondary independent commentary cannot be used for GNG. The Panorama Sport interview only has around 3 brief sentences by the interviewer, so Red XN. The TV interview has a little discussion outside the interview, but I don't speak Albanian so other than picking up a couple "Cyme"s (and "30 Seconds to Mars"...) it's hard to gauge how much is secondary direct coverage of Lulaj versus primary comments or focused on the other players. The fact that she was interviewed at all has zero bearing on notability as it is not a criterion of ANYBIO or GNG. JoelleJay (talk) 21:17, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
