Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

    October 12

I have accidently removed an entire picture at the top of this page - I was trying to make it smaller - can you fix it up please? Sorry 203.132.68.1 (talk) 00:32, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    •  Done; A simple undo from page history will do it: Special:Diff/863631676. 84.250.17.211 (talk) 00:43, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not seeing the AfC helper toolbar [resolved]

As instructed here Wikipedia:WikiProject_Articles_for_creation/Helper_script, I enabled the script and purged my cache. I know that it was indeed "working". When I viewed any userpage, I was getting the message to the effect of "error, the user is not listed in the Articles for Creation participants". That was before I was added to the list here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Participants. I have now been added to the list and stopped getting the error message; however, I'm not seeing the toolbar that I was supposed to see. I wonder if you may have some advice for me. I'm using Google Chrome. --K.e.coffman (talk) 02:56, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi K.e.coffman, by "not seeing the toolbar", are you saying that after you click on More ▼ in the toolbar on an AFC-applicable page, you're not able to see the Review (AFCH) link? Or are you saying that nothing happens after clicking on the Review (AFCH) link? Lourdes 09:27, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Keep in mind that it only works on an actual pending draft page. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:41, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It should work on any Draft or Userpage. I use the script to submit pages to AfC and leave comments all the time. I suspect he is not looking under "More" Legacypac (talk) 09:54, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It won't automatically popup unless you set it to under preferences, but it should be under "more" Galobtter (pingó mió) 09:57, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you've twice added (but soon after removed) the {{db-user}} tag. I would suggest that you leave the tag visible, as that puts the page into the relevant categories for speedy deletion requests. --David Biddulph (talk) 03:57, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Unable to upload image

It will not allow me to upload a photo to a Wikipedia to which we own the rights.

What do I need to do to make this change? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rnewman ECC (talk • contribs) 12:05, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Rnewman ECC. It's hard to know precisely how to advise you when you haven't explained what you mean by "it will not allow me"; but I'm guessing that you are a partner or employee of Essex Court Chambers, and are trying to upload a picture related to that. What is probably the critical point is that (with certain exceptions which are unlikely to be relevant here) Wikipedia requires that all its content be licensed in such a way that anybody may reuse it in any way for any purpose (commercial or not), under a licence such as CC-BY-SA. Your owning the rights is not enough: you have to explicitly release the image under such a licence. If you personally own the rights to the image, you can license it on the fly as you upload it; otherwise you need to follow the procedure in Donating copyright materials.
On another subject (and again assuming you are in some way part of Essex Court Chambers), please be aware that you are strongly discouraged from directly editing an article on a subject with which you are connected; and if you are in any way paid for doing so, you must declare this: please see COI and PAID. I also note (though I realise it is not you that wrote the article) that it lacks the independent reliable sources which are an essential for any Wikipedia article. --ColinFine (talk) 14:28, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@ColinFine, many thanks for your response. You are correct, I did not write the article but find it strange that no image has been uploaded as I know in many other articles an image has been uploaded. Is there a way to tell who wrote the article, it is very much out of date. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rnewman ECC (talk • contribs) 14:50, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Rnewman ECC, If you check the "view history" tab on the article-page you will see who created it in 2011 an who has edited it since then. Such info can be helpful, but I don't think it is very helpful in this case. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:14, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How to find the best page about climate change or global warming in a country or region?

I am trying to improve climate change in Turkey. Is there a way I can find the best "climate change in xxxx" or "global warming in xxxx" article to use as an example please? I asked on the talk page of global warming but no answer as yet. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chidgk1 (talk • contribs) 13:44, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Chidgk1 Welcome to Teahouse. Check out Climate change in Turkey and see if this is what you are looking for. By the way, if you intend to add/change the content, please support the claimed with independent, reliable source by providing inline citations. Thank you. CASSIOPEIA So do you mean the article I am improving is already the best regional climate change article? I have already added lots backed up with reliable sources and nominated it as a "good article" (no reviewers yet) but I suspect it could still be improved a lot.

    Chidgk1 (talk) 14:17, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Chidgk1 Sorry I misread your question. For Global warning see here. For climate change, pls see Climate change in the Arctic, Climate change in the Arctic, Climate change in Australia, Climate change in New Zealand, Climate change in Canada, Climate change in Washington, Climate change, industry and society, Climate change in California, Climate change in Tuvalu. CASSIOPEIA Thanks for replying so promptly but on the search link you mention I cannot see how to search for articles which are at least "good" quality.
Were there any good articles that fit the criteria, I would expect them to be listed at Wikipedia:Good_articles/Natural_sciences#Meteorology. Similarly, Wikipedia:Featured_articles#Meteorology. Try this search.

    youtube videos

Why can't wikipedia work with youtube to let youtube host its videos and wikipedia use youtube videos for relevant articles? Svrangerchrista (talk) 14:23, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Svrangerchrista. You'll probably get a better answer at WT:WikiProject YouTube. But for my 2p worth: YouTube is a commercial site. It is important to Wikipedia (and the WikiMedia Foundation) not to align itself too closely with any commercial site. Even if the Foundation were careful to conclude the deal in a way which ensured that YouTube's commercial interests had no influence on Wikipedia (if that were possible) there would still be a risk that people would think its independence was compromised. Hello, IP user. Actually, it didn't say they are divorced: it only said they "announced they were divorcing". But even that claim was not referenced, and is not supported by the sources cited in the next sentence (they say only that they had "split"). So I have removed the sentence. Thank you for pointing out the discrepancy. I was confused, because I'd only heard of this Fergie. --ColinFine (talk) 19:37, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm about to reopen an 'edit' request for suggested changes to MediaWiki:Histlegend as discussed here.

My question concerns modifications to Help:Page history and the 'File:MediaWiki 1.21wmf3 page history screenshot.svg' image there needed to comport with the new design.

Am I correct that the first step is to reopen the edit request for MediaWiki:Histlegend and then to follow that up with changes to the Help:Page history graphic and minor text edits there? Is there someone who can help with changes to the graphic or is that something I should work on? Thx for guidance, Humanengr (talk) 04:33, 13 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This appears to be about Draft:Ulgoland: The Belgariad and The Malloreon. Please discuss this on that article's talk page. -Arch dude (talk) 05:36, 13 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There was no reference when it was declined [2] for being fictional. And articles should definitely indicate if the subject is fictional. Readers shouldn't have to examine references to discover that. The second decline [3] was not for being fictional but said:
"This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject. Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia."
A better (but unsourced) article called Ulgoland has already been deleted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ulgoland. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:02, 13 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I used to have a power which allowed me to accept or reject a "pending" edit to an article. I was under the impression that such pending edits no longer happen, making the power moot. Template component with no content

Template:Divbox/style/gamessage was just now in CAT:CSD: a few minutes after creating it, the creator blanked it, so it easily qualifies for G7, "If the sole author blanks a page, this can be taken as a deletion request". But templates sometimes depend on little components in surprising ways, and I don't speak MediaWiki Templatese. Does this component perform any tasks that might be affected by its deletion? [For example, maybe it's used between items that should appear together, yet if they literally occur together, they have an undesired effect, comparable to two pairs of tildes in a user-talk template that's supposed to apply a signature automatically.] I've declined the speedy for safety's sake, but if this component really isn't doing anything, I'll happily delete it. Hi Mauve Peace, I have no idea who the "your" is it that you refer to, but I think I can cast some light on the problem. All your contributions so far have been to add mentions of books to articles and you include links to a bookseller website. Such links are frequently seen as a form of advertising, which is not allowed on Wikipedia. When you reference a book you should avoid links to book sellers or any other site that is promoting the book. Rather just cite the book itself without any links. I'll post a welcome message to your talk page with links to pages with further guidance. Welcome to Wikipedia. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 18:04, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not so. (Unless it is possible to be more than one person.) I often follow up literary references on wiki. I have seen lists of relevant books on many wikipedia articles.

I didn't realise links are not allowed, so shan't do it in future.

However, I note it seems t be OK for others to put up links.

No, it's not OK for others either. If you see any advertising links, just remove them. Dbfirs 19:10, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Mauve Peace. I'm sorry you've had a disappointing experience: there is a lot to learn in editing Wikipedia, and we are constantly attacked by vandals and spammers. We have a policy of Assume good faith, but sometimes people can jump to a wrong conclusion.
I'll nuance the preceding answers a little: citing relevant books from reputable publishers is encouraged. (Self-published books less so: we'd need to be sure they're relevant, and we'd be very cautious if it was the author or publisher of the book adding the reference). The important part of a citation is the bibliographic information, which should allow any reader in principle to find a copy of the book (eg via a major public library). An online link is a helpful convenience, but it must not be to a commercial site: a link to Google Books, or the catalogue entry in a major library, is OK (especially if the text is viewable somewhere!) but not to Amazon or Ebay.
Ideally, all information in an article is cited to a reliable published source (on-line or not), and referencing for beginners explains how to do that. A more extended bibliography is sometimes appropriate, but any links in it should follow the guidelines in external links.
@Mauve Peace: Just to clarify: 1) links to books are often acceptable. You should use the ISBN or DOI of the book. Do not link to a bookseller, not even to Amazon. We sometimes use the term "vandalism" when reverting an edit due to non-compliance with our guidelines, even when this term is not precise. This is especially true when using semi-automated tools. A link to a bookseller is more properly called "linkspam". (see WP:LINKSPAM). There are frequently hundreds of non-policy-compliant edits per day, and the editors who try to fix them are therefore in a hurry. Please start by assuming good faith (see WP:AGF). 3) Before you start removing material, please make sure you understand the guidelines, and that you are clear on the distinction between a link to a book and a link to a bookseller. And thanks for offering to help. -Arch dude (talk) 20:41, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Valid reference issue

Hi. I intended to create a page related to the personality Teal Swan, since the existent Wikiglobal[1] and swedish Wikipedia[2] pages (translated by Google Translate[3]) are highly biased (probably created by her haters - should be reviewed in perspective). However, the main issue I encountered was that there is no "valid" reference, if I were to make a page, namely there are no books written about her nor new york times articles (which I read are the only valid form of reference). Instead, the only existent information is her own books [4] and website [5], along with blog entries[6] (which are admittedly invalid). In this case, what do you think should be done? I noticed that the other pages about her (and others about personalities) also used as reference blogs and websites, which makes me question whether this is possible in this situation. Thanks a lot in advance! Connectingtosource (talk) 18:30, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Books and NYT articles are, of course, not the only valid form of references. Anything that is independent and reliable will do. If coverage in sources like this is deemed significant, then we can have an article.
What to do about the other articles? In principle, all language editions of Wikipedia have their own rules, so you'll have to check with them. Start on the article Talk page. I don't know who wiki-global are or who writes their articles; they're not affiliated with Wikipedia. – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 18:54, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Text about Stephen Marney in Dada Vujasinović

Hi, the article about Dada Vujasinović shows text about a certain Stephen Marney right after the {{Authority control}}, but I can't figure out where that comes from in the edit source. Any idea how to get rid of it? Thanks.--goth nespresso 23:55, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Goth nespresso: It was added by an inappropriate modification to {{Europe-journalist-stub}}, which has since been removed. -Arch dude (talk) 02:22, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Emma Eckstein

Jeffrey Masson in his assault on Freud's abandonment of the seduction theory makes much of Eckstein's role, linking Freud's "abandonment" of her position with respect to the Fliess surgery to his "abandonment" of her evidence for the paternal etiology of neurosis: for 'the idea – which even Masson concedes is crazy – that...all neurotic patients had been sexually abused'.[21]

I would like to change this to reflect my views, and would suggest this:

Jeffrey Masson in his book The Assault on Truth: Freud's Abandonment of the Seduction Theory, makes much of Eckstein's role. He believes that Freud was heavily influenced by Emma Eckstein (who actually was the first person to practice psychoanalysis after Freud, under his supervision), and the fact that she reported sexual abuse memories in her patients encouraged Freud to believe he had been correct to think of sexual abuse as playing a major role in the origin of neurosis. For a time he (and presumably Emma Eckstein as well) believed that all neurotic patients had been sexually abused. This is almost certainly not the case, but the role of sexual abuse (and other forms of childhood trauma) in most cases of adult happiness cannot be denied. Masson believes that the disastrous operation on Emma Eckstein by Fliess discouraged Freud from continuing to work and learn from her. Her role in the creation of psychoanalysis has never been properly acknowledged.

Hello, @Jeffrey Masson:. The appropriate place to propose changes to an article (in this case that of Emma Eckstein) is on that article's Talk page.
However, you raise a large red flag with your wording "I would like to change this to reflect my views." Wikipedia should only contain text based directly on (though not copying word-for-word, except for short, attributed quotes) Reliable sources that are cited to support it. Your own "views" (just like mine, or anyone else's) are not appropriate unless they have appeared in a published reliable source, and in such a case you yourself should not add such material, but rather suggest on the Talk page that someone else might consider doing so.
The text you have reproduced from the article above does is cited to a (presumably reliable) source written by a third party: if it misrepresents that source it should be amended appropriately or removed, but otherwise you should not remove cited material. If you disagree with the material you are free to add and cite material from other reliable sources that presents an alternative scholarly viewpoint (or propose them for such addition if they are your own work), but Wikipedia is not the venue to continue academic disagreements or present previously unpublished original material. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.217.102.65 (talk) 00:47, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Remove 3 references and some text from a wikipage

Hi, The person of the page has requested me to delete the 44,50,51 references link and text related these links, The page is "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Greenfield,_Baroness_Greenfield" Can I remove it? please inform me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gain334989 (talk • contribs) 02:28, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Gain334989:Editors such as yourself are supposed to make decisions like this by discussion on the article's talk page to reach consensus. If there is a consensus, then remove the material or suggest that the other editor do so. You do not need permission from the help desk. -Arch dude (talk) 04:18, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Gain334989: Oops, I now see that the request is from the subject of the page. No, we do not remove reliably sources material from an article at the requiest of the subject. However, we are sensitive to poorly-sourced material or unreliable sources: see our policy at WP:BLP. If you agree that the sources do nt meet the extra rigour required for contentious material in a Biography, then remove it: otherwise not. -Arch dude (talk) 04:22, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Those look like rock-solid sources. Do not remove this material without some serious discussion on the talk page. -Arch dude (talk) 04:26, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed four sources, including the three mentioned above, and the text related to the same. All of these were primary in nature and did not adhere to wp:npov. Further discussions on the validity of these sources may be continued on the article's talk page. Thanks, Lourdes 08:41, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Social Media as Sources

Hello, my revision to a Wikipedia biography page on Noelle Stevenson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noelle_Stevenson) was reverted as a result of, allegedly, my having used both Facebook and Twitter as sources. However, the specific Facebook and Twitter URLs provided were for the public Facebook and Twitter profiles of the persons whose (relevant) quotes were being referenced, including the SUBJECT of the bio page (Stevenson) whose OWN quotes were referenced and which do not appear in any other media. How does one properly cite a source for quotes attributable to the subject of a Wikipedia biography entry if those quotes are ONLY AVAILABLE on their social media profile?! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eeverseau (talk • contribs) 06:15, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Eeverseau. Well, you did use FB and twitter as sources.[5] Anyway, per WP:ABOUTSELF etc, if social media/whatever is the only source for something, we don't include it, unless possibly if it is something very uncontroversial about the subject themselves. Stuff like "which has been controversial" and "Stevenson has been outspoken in her defense of the new series on social media" should never be sourced to social media on WP, someone else must have noted it and bothered to write about it. When you have found non-social media sources, consider other stuff like WP:PROPORTION. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:57, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If you haven't, take a look at WP:RELIABLE SOURCES for our guideline on what sources can be used where. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:04, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    vandalism

I don't know where I should mention this, so maybe someone here knows. I just opened Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Language and it has a vandal's message scrawled on it. It cannot be removed by editing. 09:15, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

@Stephen G. Brown: Thanks for noticing. The vandalism was removed with this edit. Eagleash (talk) 09:34, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There was some other vandalism (same content), not directly to the RefDesk but appearing on all of the desks, which has now been removed. DuncanHill (talk) 09:37, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What do I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaydauenhauer (talk • contribs) 13:18, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaydauenhauer: Hello, it is not clear exactly what it is you are referring to. I cannot see from your recent edits that you attempted to add an image to the article. Please can you give the volunteers here a little more information. When you say 'upload', where to?
Please note that punctuation goes before any references; I.e. at the end of the sentence or phrase but before the <ref> tag. Please sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. I will leave some helpful links at your talk page. Eagleash (talk) 14:36, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What adverts or promotions can we put on our Wikipedia page?

    Hi

We have just setup a new wikipedia account.

What type of advertising or website links are we allowed to add to our Wikipedia page?

We have a press releases article that was published by the Guardian newspaper, how do we add that if it’s possible?
