As instructed here Wikipedia:WikiProject_Articles_for_creation/Helper_script, I enabled the script and purged my cache. I know that it was indeed "working". When I viewed any userpage, I was getting the message to the effect of "error, the user is not listed in the Articles for Creation participants". That was before I was added to the list here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Participants. I have now been added to the list and stopped getting the error message; however, I'm not seeing the toolbar that I was supposed to see. I wonder if you may have some advice for me. Hi K.e.coffman, by "not seeing the toolbar", are you saying that after you click on More ▼ in the toolbar on an AFC-applicable page, you're not able to see the Review (AFCH) link? Hello, Rnewman ECC. It's hard to know precisely how to advise you when you haven't explained what you mean by "it will not allow me"; but I'm guessing that you are a partner or employee of Essex Court Chambers, and are trying to upload a picture related to that. What is probably the critical point is that (with certain exceptions which are unlikely to be relevant here) Wikipedia requires that all its content be licensed in such a way that anybody may reuse it in any way for any purpose (commercial or not), under a licence such as CC-BY-SA. Your owning the rights is not enough: you have to explicitly release the image under such a licence. If you personally own the rights to the image, you can license it on the fly as you upload it; otherwise you need to follow the procedure in Donating copyright materials.

On another subject (and again assuming you are in some way part of Essex Court Chambers), please be aware that you are strongly discouraged from directly editing an article on a subject with which you are connected; and if you are in any way paid for doing so, you must declare this: please see COI and PAID. I also note (though I realise it is not you that wrote the article) that it lacks the independent reliable sources which are an essential for any Wikipedia article. --ColinFine (talk) 14:28, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct, I did not write the article but find it strange that no image has been uploaded as I know in many other articles an image has been uploaded. Hello, Svrangerchrista. You'll probably get a better answer at WT:WikiProject YouTube. But for my 2p worth: YouTube is a commercial site. It is important to Wikipedia (and the WikiMedia Foundation) not to align itself too closely with any commercial site. Even if the Foundation were careful to conclude the deal in a way which ensured that YouTube's commercial interests had no influence on Wikipedia (if that were possible) there would still be a risk that people would think its independence was compromised. I'm about to reopen an 'edit' request for suggested changes to MediaWiki:Histlegend as discussed here.

My question concerns modifications to Help:Page history and the 'File:MediaWiki 1.21wmf3 page history screenshot.svg' image there needed to comport with the new design.

Am I correct that the first step is to reopen the edit request for MediaWiki:Histlegend and then to follow that up with changes to the Help:Page history graphic and minor text edits there? There was no reference when it was declined [2] for being fictional. And articles should definitely indicate if the subject is fictional. Readers shouldn't have to examine references to discover that. The second decline [3] was not for being fictional but said:

"This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject. Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia."

It seems to me that these two articles are about the same river. A slight difference in the English spelling could arise from the transliteration of the state-adopted and local regional language or a different transliteration system of the same language. To remind you yet again,if an error message in red has the word "help" in blue, that is a wikilink to specific help. In this case the link is to Help:CS1 errors#param has ext link. While you're at it, remember that the "publisher" parameter is for the publisher; the date belongs in the "date" parameter. I used to have a power which allowed me to accept or reject a "pending" edit to an article. I was under the impression that such pending edits no longer happen, making the power moot. Pending changes protection was trialled from June 2010 to May 2011, and was made permanent in December 2012. Template:Divbox/style/gamessage was just now in CAT:CSD: a few minutes after creating it, the creator blanked it, so it easily qualifies for G7, "If the sole author blanks a page, this can be taken as a deletion request". But templates sometimes depend on little components in surprising ways, and I don't speak MediaWiki Templatese. Does this component perform any tasks that might be affected by its deletion? [For example, maybe it's used between items that should appear together, yet if they literally occur together, they have an undesired effect, comparable to two pairs of tildes in a user-talk template that's supposed to apply a signature automatically.] I've declined the speedy for safety's sake, but if this component really isn't doing anything, I'll happily delete it. My confusion lies in the difficulty of finding "conditional" uses [my own term], e.g. if |2=sampletext1, transclude this component, while if not, don't transclude it. Any time you click on a link to another language's Wikipedia, even inadvertently (most articles have direct links to other languages) an account there is created for you. For example, I have accounts on 58 other Wikipedias, and can't recall ever visiting most of them. You can see all your accounts by going here: [4] and putting your account name in the search box. Hi Mauve Peace, I have no idea who the "your" is it that you refer to, but I think I can cast some light on the problem. All your contributions so far have been to add mentions of books to articles and you include links to a bookseller website. Such links are frequently seen as a form of advertising, which is not allowed on Wikipedia. When you reference a book you should avoid links to book sellers or any other site that is promoting the book. Rather just cite the book itself without any links. Not so. (Unless it is possible to be more than one person.) I often follow up literary references on wiki. I have seen lists of relevant books on many wikipedia articles.

Hello, Mauve Peace. I'm sorry you've had a disappointing experience: there is a lot to learn in editing Wikipedia, and we are constantly attacked by vandals and spammers. We have a policy of Assume good faith, but sometimes people can jump to a wrong conclusion.

I'll nuance the preceding answers a little: citing relevant books from reputable publishers is encouraged. (Self-published books less so: we'd need to be sure they're relevant, and we'd be very cautious if it was the author or publisher of the book adding the reference). The important part of a citation is the bibliographic information, which should allow any reader in principle to find a copy of the book (eg via a major public library). An online link is a helpful convenience, but it must not be to a commercial site: a link to Google Books, or the catalogue entry in a major library, is OK (especially if the text is viewable somewhere!) but not to Amazon or Ebay.

Ideally, all information in an article is cited to a reliable published source (on-line or not), and referencing for beginners explains how to do that. A more extended bibliography is sometimes appropriate, but any links in it should follow the guidelines in external links.

@Mauve Peace: Just to clarify: 1) links to books are often acceptable. You should use the ISBN or DOI of the book. Do not link to a bookseller, not even to Amazon. We sometimes use the term "vandalism" when reverting an edit due to non-compliance with our guidelines, even when this term is not precise. This is especially true when using semi-automated tools. A link to a bookseller is more properly called "linkspam". (see WP:LINKSPAM). There are frequently hundreds of non-policy-compliant edits per day, and the editors who try to fix them are therefore in a hurry. Please start by assuming good faith (see WP:AGF). 3) Before you start removing material, please make sure you understand the guidelines, and that you are clear on the distinction between a link to a book and a link to a bookseller. Hi. I intended to create a page related to the personality Teal Swan, since the existent Wikiglobal^[1] and swedish Wikipedia^[2] pages (translated by Google Translate^[3]) are highly biased (probably created by her haters - should be reviewed in perspective). However, the main issue I encountered was that there is no "valid" reference, if I were to make a page, namely there are no books written about her nor new york times articles (which I read are the only valid form of reference). Instead, the only existent information is her own books ^[4] and website ^[5], along with blog entries^[6] (which are admittedly invalid). In this case, what do you think should be done? I noticed that the other pages about her (and others about personalities) also used as reference blogs and websites, which makes me question whether this is possible in this situation. Books and NYT articles are, of course, not the only valid form of references. Anything that is independent and reliable will do. If coverage in sources like this is deemed significant, then we can have an article.

What to do about the other articles? In principle, all language editions of Wikipedia have their own rules, so you'll have to check with them. Start on the article Talk page. Jeffrey Masson in his assault on Freud's abandonment of the seduction theory makes much of Eckstein's role, linking Freud's "abandonment" of her position with respect to the Fliess surgery to his "abandonment" of her evidence for the paternal etiology of neurosis: for 'the idea – which even Masson concedes is crazy – that...all neurotic patients had been sexually abused'.[21]

I would like to change this to reflect my views, and would suggest this:

Jeffrey Masson in his book The Assault on Truth: Freud's Abandonment of the Seduction Theory, makes much of Eckstein's role. He believes that Freud was heavily influenced by Emma Eckstein (who actually was the first person to practice psychoanalysis after Freud, under his supervision), and the fact that she reported sexual abuse memories in her patients encouraged Freud to believe he had been correct to think of sexual abuse as playing a major role in the origin of neurosis. For a time he (and presumably Emma Eckstein as well) believed that all neurotic patients had been sexually abused. This is almost certainly not the case, but the role of sexual abuse (and other forms of childhood trauma) in most cases of adult happiness cannot be denied. Masson believes that the disastrous operation on Emma Eckstein by Fliess discouraged Freud from continuing to work and learn from her. Her role in the creation of psychoanalysis has never been properly acknowledged.

Hello, @Jeffrey Masson:. The appropriate place to propose changes to an article (in this case that of Emma Eckstein) is on that article's Talk page.

However, you raise a large red flag with your wording "I would like to change this to reflect my views." Wikipedia should only contain text based directly on (though not copying word-for-word, except for short, attributed quotes) Reliable sources that are cited to support it. Your own "views" (just like mine, or anyone else's) are not appropriate unless they have appeared in a published reliable source, and in such a case you yourself should not add such material, but rather suggest on the Talk page that someone else might consider doing so.

The text you have reproduced from the article above does is cited to a (presumably reliable) source written by a third party: if it misrepresents that source it should be amended appropriately or removed, but otherwise you should not remove cited material. Hello, my revision to a Wikipedia biography page on Noelle Stevenson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noelle_Stevenson) was reverted as a result of, allegedly, my having used both Facebook and Twitter as sources. However, the specific Facebook and Twitter URLs provided were for the public Facebook and Twitter profiles of the persons whose (relevant) quotes were being referenced, including the SUBJECT of the bio page (Stevenson) whose OWN quotes were referenced and which do not appear in any other media. Hello Eeverseau. Well, you did use FB and twitter as sources.[5] Anyway, per WP:ABOUTSELF etc, if social media/whatever is the only source for something, we don't include it, unless possibly if it is something very uncontroversial about the subject themselves. Stuff like "which has been controversial" and "Stevenson has been outspoken in her defense of the new series on social media" should never be sourced to social media on WP, someone else must have noted it and bothered to write about it.
