Revision as of 01:07, 25 May 2007

This page is for requests to usurp accounts that already exist in the circumstances described below. If you wish to request a rename to a username that is not already taken, please do so at Wikipedia:Changing username.

This page permits users to request, and bureaucrats to consider and carry out, the "usurpation" of usernames. This consists of renaming an existing dormant account in order to permit another user to adopt the name. If you are interested in usurping another username, please be advised that the account must have no edits or log entries (except in the username creation log) to qualify for usurpation. A request may also be rejected if it is determined that the requested account has made edits that were subsequently deleted.

Please do not request usurpation if your user account is less than several months old, or barely used. In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users.

Process

Please follow these instructions carefully to ensure that the process runs efficiently. Malformed requests may be rejected.

  • Be sure the account you wish to usurp has no edits or log entries, as described above.
  • Leave a message on the talk page of the target account (preferably of the form {{subst:usurpation requested}} ~~~~) notifying the user of your request.
  • Please do not e-mail the target account yourself. If this becomes necessary, a bureaucrat or other designated user will do it.
  • Copy and paste the following text into the bottom of the section on this page for today's date.
{{subst:usurp|Name_To_Usurp|Current_Name}} ~~~~
Replace "Name_To_Usurp" with the username you wish to usurp, and "Current_Name" with your current username. You may include some reason for the change if you wish. Be sure you are logged in under your current username. Save the page.
  • If the owner of the target account does not object within seven days, a bureaucrat will fulfill your request. Mark the date, so you will not be surprised when you find yourself unable to log in to your old account.

A few users have agreed to provide assistance with the mechanics of this process. If you wish to assist as well, please read the linked page carefully.

Instructions to bureaucrats

  • Accounts should be renamed to "Username (usurped)" -- this is intuitive and is unlikely ever to be a desired account name. The links labeled '1' and '2' will automatically fill out the user renaming interface with the proper information.
  • If a user consents to have his account usurped, the request may be fulfilled immediately, rather than after the full waiting period.
  • Mark completed requests with {{done}} and rejected requests with {{not done}}. A bot will archive them.

Why do you want to be renamed again? Secretlondon 00:31, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think you've seen the first reason I changed my name to Wikihermit. The main reason for my name change to "T" is for simplicity. WǐkǐɧérṃǐťTalk to me 00:33, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You've only been here 3 months (first edit Feb 07) and this would be your second rename. I don't think I'm going to count you as an established editor - especially for one of the much sought after single letter user names.. Secretlondon 21:48, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If I changed my targeted user name, would that help? --WikihermitTalk to me 22:55, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Infophile ← DrLeebot

  • Current username: DrLeebot (talk · contribs · logs · block log)
  • Target username: Infophile (talk · contribs · logs · block log)
  • Datestamp: 15:32, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
  • For bureaucrat use: Email target username; (1); (2)

Reasoning: There's the potential that my current name may cause me to be mistaken for a bot. I've left a note on my user page about it to clear up confusion, but a change in name would prevent any confusion in the first place. The name "Infophile" is what I generally go by elsewhere on the 'net, so I'd like to use that here as well.

Note on my contributions: Due to my work/school schedule, I have a lot more time to help out here during the summer. This is why you'll see a long period of little activity over the last eight months on my account. I expect to be making many more contributions in the coming months.--DrLeebot 15:32, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

George ← George.Saliba

Reasoning: User appears to just be a name squatter; no user page, no edits, no messages left for them – ever. I would prefer the anonymity of the name "George" to my full name, without losing the full identity that I've established here on Wikipedia as a hard-working editor who tries to find neutrality on controversial issues. I believe this name would let me achieve both these things – anonymity with recognizability to my existing friends and peers. — George Saliba [talk] 16:57, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Additionally, I do not want to be confused with George Saliba, a professor at Columbia University. While we share the same name, we are not the same person, and I don't want any bias in discussions, either in favor or in opposition to my views, based on my name. I'm not aware of anyone that has noticed the article with the same name yet, but I suspect that it's just a matter of time until someone confuses me for him. — George Saliba [talk] 17:33, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I believe I once created this account and then forgot about it. I have the same account name on commons and in de-wp. I've been a WikiGnome in en-wp as an IP for quite some time now and would like to have an account since it's more convenient to edit while logged in. Thanks and cheers, Gnom2 11:53, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Usurpation is usually reserved for established contributers and your account has very few editts. However, given your use of this name on other projects, a bureaucrat may be willing to perform the usurpation anyway. If you can provide details of the IP address you edit from so that its contribs can be reviewed, that would strengthen your case... WjBscribe 12:00, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Exempli gratia: See my last edit. --Gnom2 12:15, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately if your contributions are over a number of IPs that makes it a lot harder to review them. I note that you have been a user of de.wiki since January 2005 and have made over a thousand edits to that project. We'll see what the bureaucrats decide. Even if they don't think its appropriate to do it now you can always ask again after a few months of editing as Gnom2... WjBscribe 12:21, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • This username has not been notified of usurpation. I did not make the notification myself because another user unrelated to this usurpation request has redirected User talk:N to their own usertalk page. The person making this request should remove the redirect and replace it with the proper notification template on that page. Also, if this usurpation is done, NeonMerlin (talk · contribs) should be notified that his or her redirects at User:R User:N and User talk:R User talk:N will no longer be redirecting to their user space. --NickContact/Contribs 19:10, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • (edit conflict) I was just about to write about this but I had to answer the phone. Apparently this account was created by User:NeonMerlin as a shortcut for his signature, however only 2 pages other than this one link to User:N and none link to User talk:N. I will post on both N and NeonMerlin's pages, and will fix the two N signatures if this change is approved. (I believe you mistyped when you put User:R in the post above). • I would prefer to use this account name, which seemingly has no edits or logs, so that I can ditch the initials. I wonder though, will all of my edits be reassigned to this user name in edit histories, even though my signature links will stay the same (which is fine)? Also, can redirects from the old name be protected somehow? Thanks. Charles 03:33, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes all your edits and logged actions will be attributed to your new username. Your signature on any pages you've signed in the past will still point to the old pages but you can redirect them to the new ones. Prob the best way to make sure you keep the redirects would be to recreate the account "Cfvh" following the rename. WjBscribe 03:36, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you for your speedy answer, WJBscribe. I presume this will still take the full week to take effect? Charles 03:38, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it will take at least a week and may be a little longer depending on how busy our bureaucrats are at the time. WjBscribe 03:41, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh okay, thank you! Will I be notified when the change occurs? Charles 03:44, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I can email you if you would like - but you'll probably notice as you won't be able to log in as "Cfvh" and will need to log in as "Charles". Also all your userpages and subpages will be automatically renamed. WjBscribe 03:48, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I was actually about to ask about the subpages and user pages as I have an awful habit of asking a question and then coming back to ask another :-) An email would probably be the best solution for me as I check my email more often than my Wikipedia.  Clerk note:This user has made less than 5 edits to wikipedia, usurpation is normally reserved for established users. Reachouttrust didn't get banned, he got blocked by me for having a username that was promotional for Reachout Trust, but then Doc unblocked for some reason - discussion on this username is at WT:U, it's been on WP:AN/I so it's hard to judge whether or not the user should be forced to change their name. Obviously it's at the discretion of the 'crats as to whether or not to force a name change, but the reason why I originally blocked at first was because it was against WP:U#PROMOTIONAL. • I understand that the policy is only for an account with "no edits or log entries", but this is a sockpuppet account for a blocked vandal (User:Mike Garcia), and I think that common sense should override the dogma in this case (why should such a good, simple user name go unused?). The name change is simply to simplify my presence and make it easier for people to contact me.

Is there any 'higher level' I could appeal to? I understand completely if there's a valid technical reason behind it, but otherwise...? Thanks for the help so far. michael talk 10:22, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've raised this on the Bureaucrats' noticeboard. Secretlondon 11:13, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers. michael talk 11:22, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A bizarre suggestion, but a suggestion nonetheless—why not, since it's a blocked account, move 'Michael' to 'MikeGarcia2', leaving a message that it's name was originally Michael, and then Michael is then available? Or is that too 'out there'? michael talk 11:32, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think your right of appeal is to the Arbitration Committee. Secretlondon 11:38, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I assume that if my username gets changed, I can register my old one to re-direct to new? All my edits, logs, etc. are moved to my new one? Petros471 11:17, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you can re-register the old name. I would probably recommend that to guard against impersonation. All your userpages and user subpages will automatically be moved to the new name (leaving redirects behind) during the rename. All your edits and logged actions will be reattributed to Peter, though any old links to your username (sigs on talkpages etc.) will still link to User:Petros471. My last initial. Its better then User:Js, as User:JS has edits. Also no problems with being related to the shorthand for javascript. Though just a question, what sort of impact would this have on single user login should that take place? Would I have serious problems? —— Eagle101Need help? 11:21, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand what you mean my single user login. --R ParlateContribs@ (Let's Go Yankees!) 11:29, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clerk note:-Eagle 101 is an admin, it would be helpful if someone updated Wikipedia:List of administrators and User:NoSeptember/admin username changes following the completion of this request. Also, though the block log has about 4 blocks, they all seem to be by mistake. (and one is a block from a compromised account). --R ParlateContribs@ (Let's Go Yankees!) 11:29, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

m:SUL is what I mean by single user login :) —— Eagle101Need help? 11:31, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You may also want to look at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/H:UL as well. —— Eagle101Need help? 11:34, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You'd better check with a Dev about SUL to be sure but I'm not sure what problem you're worried about. As I understand it the user with the most edits as a username would get the username. So you would be User:S on single login unless there is a User:S somewhere else that has more edits than you. WjBscribe 12:23, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Now that I'm an admin I would rather if my username was a little less directly connected to my real name. Using my initials seems like a good compromise. I understand that the rename is logged, and have no plans to change old signatures or anything like that - I just think the new name would be less conspicuous. Notes:

  1. Since I'm an admin, the usual changes to the lists of admins would have to be made. Wikipedia:List of administrators and User:NoSeptember/admin username changes
  2. The contributions page lists no edits, the block log is empty, but the log has a few uploads of deleted images. I don't mind if they end up in my logs. I don't think there is a copyright issue since the images are redlinks.

C Mummert · talk 23:47, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • This account may meet the requirements for usurpation (see below)
  • The current owner of the username has been notified of this usurpation request.
  • The current owner of this username does not have an email address specified.
As CMummert said, there are a few image uploads in the logs, but they were all deleted. It's up to the crats. --R ParlateContribs@ (Let's Go Yankees!) 00:01, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Clerk note: It should also be noted that there are a number of edits made by this account that have since been deleted [2]. Neither the logged actions nor these deleted edits will be reattributed should the rename take place (the servers will continue to regard them as by "CM"). The approach in the past has been not rename accounts with deleted edits. WjBscribe 00:15, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Too bad I can't see that :) --R ParlateContribs@ (Let's Go Yankees!) 00:19, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not done. I was unaware of the restriction on deleted edits. I retract the request; I'll request a regular rename to a never-created account instead. I'll also add the prohibition on deleted edits to the list above, since I think this page is the only place that the usurpation requirements are written down.
