The World Wrestling Federation (WWF) Light Heavyweight Championship was a professional wrestling championship. The title was challenged by light heavyweights at a maximum weight of 215 lbs.

Following this, Vince McMahon orchestrated the "Invasion" storyline, in which both WCW and ECW were ultimately dismantled. During the "Invasion", only four WCW championship titles remained active, including the WCW Cruiserweight title. On July 30, the WCW Cruiserweight Championship and the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship were unified when the WWF Light Heavyweight Champion, X-Pac, defeated the WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Billy Kidman. Heaviest champion Shinjiro Ohtani 236 lb. Ohtani won the title from El Samurai on August 10, 1997. He was forced to vacate the belt on November 5 of that year, upon the request of the WWF, so they could hold a tournament for a new champion.
