Notes to Anons

Your note at User talk:144.137.43.252 seems just a trifle harsh- the edit I've seen by the user was pretty much a simple test (appending random letters). Have you considered a {{subst:test}} instead, for first warnings? - Fennec 03:48, May 6, 2004 (UTC)

Well, I appreciate that you have no time for vandals (who does?) but I'd reserve the term for people who do stuff like replace the text with a rant, or do repeated additions, or stuff like that. Do you have time for new users who cannot immediately fathom the depths of wiki? :) I feel it's important to link people like that to the Sandbox, myself. - Fennec 03:52, May 6, 2004 (UTC)
Another consideration. What do you think of Mediawiki:test2, Mediawiki:test3, Mediawiki:test4? :) -Fennec 01:33, May 12, 2004 (UTC)

Reps from District of Columbia

Do you think US Congress Representatives from District of Columbia and Delegates to the United States House of Representatives from the District of Columbia are both needed? I ran across the one you started today, and wonder whether these overlap too much. - Kevin Saff 18:44, 7 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if you know something about it, I'll let you deal with it. I'm not comfortable enough with the terminology to take responsibility for such a change. Only please do merge the test from the deleted article if you think any of it is relevant. Kevin Saff 21:33, 9 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Our Favorite Xena Vandal

Our favorite Xena vandal is back - three new articles posted today, and two articles edited to remove substantive content. Figured you'd want to know, since you made your intent to delete and ban clear. Snowspinner 23:06, 7 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

RickK: The other links in "see also" on the soldiers pages who were accused of torture did not violate POV becuase they specifically deal with what the soldiers are accused of doing. --VTEX 02:05, 9 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, regarding your comments on all uper cased title, I did it on purpose because the artist named her specific album(s) and songs by all upper case letters. Also there exist some songs written by all lower case letters. Regards --Nuuk 04:50, 9 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Bush quotes

I notice you're still about. I have said on the Talk page that I think you cannot say "full stop" as you have. Out of politeness I was waiting for your reply(ies) before re-inserting the Bush quotes you disapprove of. Paul Beardsell 05:13, 9 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Well, would you mind being so kind as to say so to Mike, where he (and I, perhaps less effectively) has been trying to address your points.? Paul Beardsell 05:17, 9 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Ha ha. Is what you have said on the subject your opinion as a Wikipedian or your ruling as a sysop. If you neglect to say reasonably promptly I will assume the former. Paul Beardsell 05:22, 9 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

It has nothing to do with my being a sysop. RickK 05:24, 9 May 2004 (UTC) [reply]

Removing comments

I just feel very uncomfortable with you removing the comments of a user who is accusing admins of being in a cabal. You look like you are playing into thier hands. It seems to me that a better approach would be to add a note on the page saying that this user is clearly a sockpuppet and leave it at that. theresa knott 08:47, 9 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rick. This anon user seems to have a fixation on Orri Freyr Oskarsson, who it appears really does exist, but is a player for obscure Icelandic football club Thor Akureyri... but in the popular "Championship Manager" computer game he's apparently an extremely useful player! A quick google reveals that most reference are to "CM" players forums... Thanks for reverting one of the last edits. -- Arwel 23:09, 9 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Internal Links

Hi Rick, You added double square brackets for internal links to the place of birth and death respectively which I had added to the article about Jakob Heine. more on New York City

Hi Rick

I value your contributions here highly especially in the trollfighting arena, where I see them the most. I think you have the right attitude regarding the trolls.

I must take exception however to the MeatBall:ForestFire you have started regarding User:Nohat's page move of the NYC page. I don't have an opinion on what that page should be called, but I'm displeased to see two veteran contributors like you and Nohat going at it this way. Listing Nohat on Wikipedia:Requests for review of admin actions and then spilling the whole mess over on the mailing list... You may be right, I don't know, but is it worth it? Better to keep the issue on the talk page, and enlist the aid of others to move the page back.

I have moved some of the conversation back to the article talk page in an effort to tidy up. UninvitedCompany 19:19, 10 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I am definitely not the same person as Xxos, but your blocking of him knocked me out of the ring also. (Each time, Angela graciously bailed me out). RickK, I'm sorry about the whole mix-up with the issue on the U.S. Presidents and First Ladies. I think that it was all a misunderstanding, because several articles listed the first lady surname by the maiden name, and all I wanted was for all presidential articles to be in the same format, which it looks like you've already fixed up by listing the "First Lady" section of each Presidential cell with the married name, so my issue with the topic is over.

I was not trying to be a vandal, I was just trying to reinstate something that was correct info. Now you've fixed all First Ladies for use of the married name. To tell you the truth, it may look a little weird, but I think it's acceptable to a certain degree. --65.73.0.137

Caffeine Page

Rickk: you recently removed a link to the source for most of my caffeine data, which happened to be from a commercial website (stash.com).

I'm happy to give lesser importance to it, but (a) credits are due and (b) it provides verification for the data.

I'm open to alternatives...what do you recommend? Noe Valley Jeff

Grosvenor, Utah

I would have preferred to email you this question, but since that is not an option I would first like to thank you for deleting the utter nonsence. However, the entire page should be deleted as there is no such city in Utah by that name. There is an arch in Utah that carries that name, but no city by that name. I was watching the page to see what the correct process is in taking care of utter nonsence, but perhaps I'll need to dig into the FAQ a bit more. It seems like I remember reading that pages cannot be deleted. If that's the case, what can be done with a page that is completely baseless? (Also, you should read the comments that the creator of the page posted. He can't really believe what he is saying, can he?) I'm new to this so I'm sure in the future I won't be asking so many questions when I come across stuff like this. I just prefer to err' on the side of caution in the beginning. Thanks for your help. tslack2000 23:19, May 18, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for helping me on that one...and thanks especially for letting me actually do it. That's the way I learn best. It wasn't too bad a process, although I can definately see why there is discussion going on about a better way. Thanks again! tslack2000 00:01, May 19, 2004 (UTC)

Because redirects to sections do not work, only references do. Mikkalai 00:10, 19 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea. I did that because someone else killed lots of my redirects of this kind some time ago. Also, I remember there was a brief discussion at the village pump about this. Mikkalai 00:29, 19 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summary was correct for that minor edit. It wasnt description of previous major edit, and should not be understood so, as the minor edit was not vacant. Now I see I should have described the major edit as 'as discussed' or 'see talk', but it was nos intentionaly misleading. Btw, because major edit of 21:58, 18 May 2004 was discussed on Talk in advance, if anyone with a bit of good will had objections, Talk page was the right place to express them. Btw2, I'd really like to know which POV that edit pushed. Wikimol 19:29, 19 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

RickK, it may be an animal.

"Kudu" is also the Nippon-shiki for Kuzu, the Japanese name for "kudzu".

I just noticed you issuing another warning to User:66.185.84.80. It should probably be noted, this is not the first time he's been warned for vandalism - he seems to pick a new tactic every few days. Two days ago it was adding junk links to a personal site, before that personal attacks on the grounds that people were racist against whites. Now we seem to be on garden variety vandalism. Date Format

It is a standard format, to the best of my knowledge. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers). I feel you sacrifice something in readablity, not much IMHO, but gain something in that you standard dates, as the users gets choose. Burgundavia 02:40, May 22, 2004 (UTC)

    • Ok, I will refrain from doing this in the future. I misread the page regarding the the moving of date formats. I had missed the sentence that states Dates written in any of the above three formats are automatically converted to the user's preferred format as the page is displayed. That was totally me reading too quick. Thanks for catching it. Burgundavia 02:55, 22 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
      • I noticed you changed this page Immanuel Mifsud to (born on DATE) from (DATE - ). The 2nd method is one that is used by most enecylopedia's I have read, to indicated the person is still alive. Is there a standard, as I could not find one. Burgundavia 02:58, 22 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
      • I will dig for that. It seems this was the result of two different people, both trying to edit in their own way, too bad I wasn't very well informed. That must have been a lot of changing, as I watched new pages for almsot 2 hours. Burgundavia 03:02, 22 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

VfD: LotR cast lists

I was somewhat uncertain about posting these (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring cast) for deletion, having not done so before (except for one blatantly insiduous article); but I was wondering about your take on the freeware being promoted on those pages as well - each section seems to include a link (bottom right corner) leading to this site/product: http://www.1-4a.com/imdb2wiki/ I was wondering about the issues with directly lifting the IMDb-formatted data and just creating Wikipedia pages with it. MisfitToys 03:26, May 22, 2004 (UTC)

I can't tell that the freeware's been used for any other Wikipedia pages; these lists are posted from an anon address, and I don't know if the freeware developer has a Wikipedia account either. MisfitToys 04:23, May 22, 2004 (UTC)
Misfit is right though, this freeware could pose a worried trend of people using it to ripoff imdb. Maybe I policy needs to be thought up to forestall that. This site is going to get a lot more attention than usual because it was listed on vfd. Any thoughts? Burgundavia 06:21, 22 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Of em-dashes and political ridings

You raise a good point about making things simple, although a search for Trinity-Spadina with the hyphen caught the em-dash just fine.

The main need for the complexity is that Elections Canada draws a distinction between electoral districts with hyphens and those with em-dashes. This stems from a couple of things, most notably Canadian bilingualism policy. In French it's tradtional for compound nouns to be joined with hyphens, so an area known as "Les Patriotes" is actually spelt "Les-Patriotes." When it shares an electoral district with an adjoing area, such as Verchères, the combined entity is "Verchères—Les-Patriotes," using the em-dash. Likewise, sometimes regions in English and French Canada alike have hyphenated names to begin with, like the Regional Municipality of Chatham-Kent. When joined to the region of Essex, we get Chatham-Kent—Essex, again, with the em-dash.

List of Canada's electoral districts was begun by other contributors with em-dashes from the inception, and I've been trying to bring the few outliers in line with this.
