Range blocks

Hiya I saw you recent post at the village pump, and thought I'd come an teach you how you could have done it.

Firstly do a reverse DNS check to see the internet provider. If it's AOL give up. AOL is far too large, has far too many computers for you to ba able to block the vandal. You'll sucseed in blocking loads of legit users and probably won't get the actual vandal.

Assuming it's not AOL then proceed as follows,

64.12.116.10 through 64.12.117.22

Set the last digits to 0 64.12.116.0 ->> 64.12.117.0

do two /24 blocks 64.12.116.0/24 and 64.12.117.0/24 that will block a total of 512 IPs

Stick to /24 only if you are at all unsure about what you are doing. Note that /31 will block fewer than /24 and /16 will block a lot more. Never go lower than /16 ( I don't you you can in actual fact anyway) Also since range blocks catch innocents as well as vandals keep them short. Policy is 24 hours only I think.

Stress

Cookies!
Cookies!

You always seem to be under a lot of stress, what with dealing with trolls and vandals and people who just don't get it. Relax and have a cookie. You'll feel better (food allergies excepted). -- Cyrius| 06:18, 7 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Farce

Hi! About Zahra Kazemi trail. Iran admited that Zahra Kazemi was killed (load word) in prison. Various official reports talk about torture, phisically attack, damaged body (load words). The article is full of load words.

A farce is a comedy written for the stage, or a film, which aims to entertain the audience by means of unlikely and extravagant yet often possible situations, disguise and mistaken identity, verbal humour of varying degrees of sophistication, which may include puns and sexual innuendo, and a fast-paced plot whose speed usually increases even further towards the end of the play, often involving an elaborate chase scene. Broad physical humor, and deliberate absurdity or nonsense, are also commonly employed in farce.

I think this is the right word about that trial: an exemplar farce with a threatening message for Iranians. --Vasile 01:49, 8 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Maybe the farce

I added screencaps to a lot of articles, but I thought you'd like to see Denise Alexander. Look at my user contributions and tell me what you think of them. I have ten more ready to place. Mike H 02:37, Aug 8, 2004 (UTC)

Oops...

Sorry, Rick...that comment was mine. I was surfing anonymously and found that ridiculous article. Couldn't resist, and I still care just enough to want to see crap speed-deleted. "Lucky 6.9" aka 4.16.255.30 06:15, 8 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi, again. I'll sign in if you think that, uh, article is a VfD candidate. - 4.16.255.30 06:20, 8 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Eva Longoria Christopher

Yeah, as far as I know, they're just in the process of divorce. For all intensive purposes, though, it's over, because Soap Opera Digest ran a "cute couple" pictorial on him and Natalia Livingston. Apparently that's why him and Eva broke up. Mike H 21:54, Aug 8, 2004 (UTC)

  • Off to the village pump, then. I may be staying away from VfD, but I sure as shooting am NOT going to let this idiot win anywhere else. What do I have to do to be nominated as a sysop? I'll blow the things out of the water on sight, so help me. - Lucky 6.9 22:18, 8 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Count me in. I'm back. I may be off of VfD, but I'm back. This is war, my friend, and I am not going AWOL. - Lucky 6.9 22:29, 8 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Yes! I've accepted the nomination. Thanks for putting me up. - Lucky 6.9 01:44, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Jonathan Jackson

No I mean the Boston merchant, state senator, state treasurer and delegate to the Continental Congress. - Signed "The guy you asked"

I added to Coronation Street and many articles that linked from there. Screencaps galore. Tell me what you think of them (other than the widescreen resolution, I already got that comment). Mike H 19:49, Aug 9, 2004 (UTC)

I knew you wouldn't know anything about it, but I wanted to know if anyone had any problems with the widescreen format. Mike H 19:54, Aug 9, 2004 (UTC)

Vandals/Clueless Newbies

Hi, RickK. I wanted to let you know that I think you are being too harsh on vandals and clueless newbies. We should encourage them to make some proper edits, and if they don't listen, then we can warn them, and then block them. We can't just give them a final warning and then block them when they just do some testing to articles.

Also, you accused so many people of being trolls or vandals when they actually are not. Like User:128.12.53.90. [1]. You need to be more careful when you do things like this. Thanks. --Lst27 23:11, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Yes, I saw the whole page. You did apologize. But next time I think you should be careful and not accuse anyone of being vandals or trolls if they are not.

Also, for Pepperthemaster, I think he is just a clueless newbie, and doesn't really know how Wikipedia works. If you just tell him nicely what to do, maybe he will stop making those improper edits and do the right things. Thank you. --Lst27 23:26, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Animal names in Papiamento

RickK, it looks like you tagged Animal names in Papiamento VFD back in April, but the tag is still there. Any decision reached? Joyous 01:35, Aug 10, 2004 (UTC)

Old VFD tag

RickK, it looks like you tagged Animal names in Papiamento VFD back in April, but the tag is still there. Any decision reached? Joyous 01:37, Aug 10, 2004 (UTC)

(Sorry. I have no idea how this saved twice.) Joyous 01:39, Aug 10, 2004 (UTC)

Are you mistaken?

Article Prem_Rawat

I removed the link to crticism page, because we have incorporated the contents of that page into the main article..... This was agreed with all other contributors. I have been working on this article with Ed Poor. Please see the talk page. --Zappaz

Yeah, Rick, what's up with "RickK m (Reverted edits by Zappaz to last version by Ed Poor)"? And marking it minor? I think we need a policy page on Wikipedia:minor edits. --Uncle Ed 16:37, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I just redirected Criticism_of_Prem_Rawat page to the main article, "critics" section. That will do it. -- Zappaz 19:36, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Note

Rick, I removed that slander from the top of your page -- it looked to me like you wanted it gone when you reverted Pepper's edit, but he only added an exclamation point to the comment already there from the anon (24.whatever). If I should have left it (for what reason, I cannot fathom), please revert me. If it was on my page, I'd want anyone who saw it to delete that kind of garbage, so I feel safe cutting it. Jwrosenzweig 22:35, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Deletions

As per point four of the Wikipedia policy at Wikipedia:Deletion_guidelines_for_administrators#On_deleting_pages, please do not include {{delete}} in your deletion summary. It is obviously unnecessary and clutters the deletion log. Thanks. blankfaze | (беседа!) 00:59, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)

This is no longer the case since templates are not expanded in the deletion log. Angela. 00:14, Aug 12, 2004 (UTC)

Burnout

This last disagreement on Village Pump is really making me feel burned out. Mike H 23:43, Aug 11, 2004 (UTC)

Hope springs eternal!

Rick, the weight of the Wiki World is lifted from my shoulders thanks to you. Here is the entire proxy range from the latest B-Movie Bandit substub:

  • 64.252.0.0 - 64.252.255.255

Thank God for whois! - Lucky 6.9 00:36, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

PS, here are the rest:

Thank you SO much. - Lucky 6.9 00:50, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

listdev tag use

I saw that you removed the {{listdev}} tag from List of songs whose title includes personal names. I had added that tag because it is clearly not a complete list, but of course it never will be complete. Is that why you did so? You appear to have vastly more experience on Wikipedia, so I would appreciate your specific opinion on the use of this tag, especially since I contribute to a dozen or so such lists (having created half of them myself) and want to keep in line with good Wiki practices. Thank you. — Jeff Q 04:42, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Got your reply about Wikipedia's essential unfinishedness and the consequent pointlessness of {{listdev}}. For the most part, I agree, but I would point out that there are some lists that are sufficiently small that they could be completed; e.g., web-safe colors and area codes in the North American Numbering Plan. I don't know how many of these kinds of lists exist in Wikipedia, and some of them may not stay complete over time, but it seems the tag may have some utility. Perhaps it would be better to add some usage guidelines for it. — Jeff Q 04:59, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Vandal bot emergency

  • Dude, am I ever glad you're here. Did you see that entry on VfD above the vanity article nomination you just posted? We have the vandal bot from Hell, here. I really wish I had the admin powers. I even left a comment on the nomination page asking the opposing parties to reconsider so that I can help eliminate stuff like this. Can you help block and delete these in the meantime? They are all coming in via the same proxy. Thanks again! - Lucky 6.9 06:15, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Anons not responding

I noticed you blocked a user or two after they failed to respond, either in actions or in words, to exhortations on their user talk page. Please note that there appear to be problems with anon users seeing messages - Wikipedia:Village_pump#Bogus "you have new messages" flag for anon users? (Please fix this) - which may explain why some users appear to be carrying on cluelessly even after they've had things explained to them apparently. It might be unfair to block people in these circumstances, as it is hardly wilful vandalism. Pcb21| Pete 10:47, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Rick, 209.173.230.140 is most probably the same guy who vandalized the article all day long (check the history!). I blocked several IPs, he just dials up again and redoes it. (The article is currently protected, which is why he now starts vandalizing the talk page.) He's got a real one-track mind! I'd block him without further ado. IPs used are 209.173.231.* and lately 209.173.230.* Lupo 21:11, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

American Werewolf in Paris

  • Whoops on the page edit. New here, didn't understand how putting comments worked. Thought it followed regular edit guidelines.

Stating whether or not a film is critical success or not is a fact, not a POV. A POV is this, "That is a good cherry pie," not "That is a cherry pie." Stating that a film was "a critical failure" is not a POV, whereas saying "the mediocre film was also a critical failure," is. --Gnrlotto 06:17, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Just a heads up that he reverted a change I made to the micronation page after you gave him the three-revert warning. Also, I'm a bit too deep in the trenches to see what it is I am doing that constitutes a personal attack against him. Samboy 06:18, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Request for protection

I've been attempting to make meaningful edits to the Micronation article today, but Samboy and his crank cronies IndigoGenius, Belsoc and Stuart_Smith have been conducting what appears to be an orchestrated campaign of vandalisation and personal abuse for much of that time - making it difficult to keep track of reverts vs other edits. In the midst of all that a number of important edits from months ago have been lost. I'd like to suggest that this article be placed under protection until some of these obvious agenda-pushers disappear back into the ether. So far 3 out of 4 of them have contributed nothing of lasting value, and I suspect they won't be here for very long once their pet articles get deleted.--Gene_poole 06:50, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

To clarify, IndigoGenius, Belsoc and Stuart_Smith are not my "crank cronies". To make a long story short, "Gene Poole" has antagonized a lot of different users at the same time. I have asked "Gene Poole" for mediation, a request he has ignored. Additionally, he places his personal attacks against me publically on his user page, which is inappropriate ("no personal attacks"). Wikipedia dealing with anonymous user's talk pages

I got directed to User talk:202.182.131.21 with a "new message" notification (before I logged in) and it was something about vandalizing a page directed towards a new user. I thought may I had done something signed out that wasn't approved of, but checked my IP and discovered it's unlikely that IP could ever have been assigned to me. Anyway -- I was just curious about it. Perhaps it is a Wiki-error or something in the code? I don't know. Just thought you might like to hear about it. -SocratesJedi 07:46, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

American Werewolf in Paris

I thought Roger Ebert was a critic.

More B-Movie Bandit

The little SOB is back, and he's trying to slip under the radar with a substub called Death Certificate (album). I've redirected it to Ice Cube. The SBC proxy is 69.37.75.234 and I'll keep an eye out for more mischief. - Lucky 6.9 21:18, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

  • You think it could have been this creep the whole time? He might have just given himself away. This last thing was classic Bandit except for the subject. Even the proxy was the same. - Lucky 6.9 23:02, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Shoot. This is out of the Northeast. BTW, we have a clueless newbie who is bordering on vandal posting a heap of copyvio text dumps. Oddly, he's given himself the user name of "Texastame" so he probably means well, but he's also blanking the copyvio notices. - Lucky 6.9 23:14, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Still MORE B-Movie Bandit

I swear to God, I hope I never find this dummy. Latest proxy is 64.252.91.29 and latest "articles" are Wally Kurth and Mark L. Walberg. - Lucky 6.9 03:13, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

  • I do not believe this. I've left a polite note on Gz's talk page and I hope that he'll reconsider. It seems others have edited the template, so it seems that I'm not alone. On the other hand, this is the first time an original work of mine is up for deletion! One more for the baby book.  :^) - Lucky 6.9 06:24, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)

This is probably the wrong place to write this but in the last 10 minutes 207.248.159.230 has blanked about 50 pages. Can you block him quickly? Dmn / Դմն 19:17, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi Rick.. it looks to me like Marine wasn't deliberately reverting your edit, I'd guess that having written the article, he spotted an error (the square brackets the wrong way round around "American"), and went to fix it, ignoring the edit conflict in the process (and thus trashing your edit). If you diff the original state of the article with the edit of his that undid your work, that's the only difference.

Anyway, it doesn't look like anything has been undone since then, so hopefully it will be OK? —Stormie 07:36, Aug 15, 2004 (UTC)

Fair enough.. one tip: Marine does his articles in chunks (he seems to save them a paragraph or so at a time) - but when you see the "See also: List of famous Puerto Ricans" at the bottom, you know he's finished. :-) —Stormie 07:44, Aug 15, 2004 (UTC)

tell the truth, In my rsearch I read that she (Chita) is considered a legend in Broadway such as Frank Sinatra is a legend in Hollywood. About the American National treasure, I personally do not agree with that description either but, it seems that that is the title that they give to those who win the Kennedy Honors Award. I don't have anything against you RickK, but you sure seem to take a special interest in my articles lately. User:Marine 69-71

I'm glad that you do not have any particular interest in me or my articles. You can find quotes about her legendary status in "In Theatre Magazine" Interview Now-Up 12/26/03 by Richard Connema "The Legendary career of Broadway Dynamo Chita Rivera". and also in the London Review "Chita Rivera Broadway Legend". I don't make this stuff up and I'm certainly do not post my POV because it is unethical. User:marine 69-71

Thanks

Great work on Berlin Alexanderplatz . Another red link bites the dust to reveal a succinct and informative page. Norwikian 09:03, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)

More thanks

I think I may have scuttled my own admin nomiation with that template. I'm saddened that the B-Movie Bandit has won again. There are only four hours left, so let's see what happens. The discussion has even brought out a possible sockpuppet accusing me of being a sockpuppet! If I don't get the nomination, thanks ahead of time for all your support. Working together to put a stop to this idiot would be worth losing out. - Lucky 6.9 19:30, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)

  • Looks like consensus wasn't reached on the nomination that you were so kind to forward. The B-Movie Bandit won twice. There's still heated discussion of VfD regarding that template. I think I'm going to take a few days off. I'm not quitting, mind you. It's just sad that this guy won and I lost. Really lost. Despite my contributions on VfD, I'm very much an inclusionist, but not at the expense of content or quality. Again I ask, are we any worse off without an article on "Staci Greason?" Or, are we better off with an utterly useless substub that makes the entire project look stupid? I just need to turn my head away for a bit. I've just started a new job as of today, so I'm sure I'll be busy. I'll still check my personal e-mail, so feel free to answer me there. - Lucky 6.9 19:58, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

*blush* Wow, thanks so much! If only that slippery block bug weren't so prevalent (speaking of which, thanks for following up on that indian-model.net spammer yesterday). It's great to get a nod from you, as I believe your dedication should be emulated. And for what it's worth, you're always welcome in my corner of the proverbial china shop.[2] ;) Regards, -- Hadal 03:03, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I am terribly newby and I think it was you who posted something in my article telling me to cleanup... How do I do that?

Triamory

I have added an article about "Triamory", which was after a while redirected to "polyamory" by RickK. According to the wiki-rules a redirect should happen only, if the target is also explaining the redirected word. But Polyamory does not mention the word triamory. What can I do to avoid these redirections? Kwally

newbie, I hope you understand

Please accept my appologies for making that anonymous post on your page, but I hadn't realized yet how to make it other way nor I realized that making it that way it become anonymous at the final

EU medal count

Can you please explain exactly what parts of the article deserve the claim of being labeled "The sanity of this article is disputed." ? Just because it is something you don't agree with makes it not worthless.Yardcock

That's not an explanation, the article aknowledges these facts. Yardcock 22:26, Aug 17, 2004 (UTC)
So your explanation is "It's bogus, that's why it is insane?" Sorry, but that doesn't sound like a great reason. It looks like the article will get deleted for various reasons. However I would appreciate it if you'd remove the 'sanity' message, because it does not apply.

On Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Rhuma kushuma, I appear to have fouled up & accidentally posted my comment before you finished posting the listing, and now your initial comment isn't appearing on the main VfD page. What did I do wrong? -FZ 23:24, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)
