I noted your comments on the talk page a while back, and thought you may like a summary.

• Some would like to delete the list because it is "POV since dictator is undefinable"

• Others argue that the page violates WP:NOR since agreeing consensually to follow a universal dictionary definition is original research. 'Nuff said.

• Some have argued that it should be deleted because it is POV to call anyone a dictator. Which is actually a required argument for deleting this list when you think about it. Otherwise why not just pare it down to a common denominator?

• Pushed into a logical corner some have argued that since POV could be added, the list should be deleted. Which would apply to every article in wiki.

Dictator is not a hard word to define - nor is it in any way controversial amongst dictionaries, encyclopedias, historians, the media or the public or on wiki, where it is used 27,700 times. So clear is the meaning that dictators and their supporters often concede the "dictator" part and merely add "benevolent".

It is long established that POV in an article is in any case no grounds for deletion - merely for its improvement.

People also seem unclear that NPOV is achieved through consensus not some theoretical construct that exists or not.

If there are such things as "dictators" they the list must stay, at least in some form. If it is deleted this implication is that describing anyone as a dictator is always POV. This of course would not only be egregious POV, but is relativism beyond any reasonable point, defies a universal understanding of a word amongst historians and the public - even David Irving.

The spectre of wikipedia refusing to list Hitler+Mussolini et al as dictators hangs over us. Please consider this matter.

Hi Dan, I thought since I have a little spare time, I would reply to your comment on my RfB. Mainly I've avoided janitorial duties in the past months because of my limited internet access (as I explained), and I of course place a higher priority on improving and writing articles than janitorial duties. However, because I now have internet access at home, I have a lot more spare time to help out on Wikipedia, as evinced by my closing of AfD debates over the past few days. (Most of them were controversial because I focused on the backlog; all the easy ones had been taken by other admins already.) I already helped clear out some the "easy" debates today on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2005 November 25, and now I'm itching to find some other thing to do because I have *a lot* of free time on my hands (I have at least three or four more hours left with nothing to do before going to bed). Going through the RFA talk archives, I noticed that Uninvited Company (another bureaucrat) said it takes about half an hour to close one RFA debate. Usually I spend two or three hours a day closing AFD debates, which works out to four to six RFAs a day, without impacting my contributions to the article space at all. Maybe the need for new 'crats isn't that bad, but I'm sure you would appreciate the half an hour or two of your time freed up with a few extra ones helping out. Just some thoughts, and best regards. I see on Harro5's page [4] that you recently gave him/her administrator status. Yesterday s/he deleted my first submission without notice. True, it was for testing purposes, but at the time I didn't know there was a test page. I was simply following the general direction to go ahead and post. There is a guideline for administrators that reads, "Do not bite the newcomer." From the looks of some other people's experiences with Harro5, s/he is abusing administrator privilege. You would do well to revoke this privilege, and I'm sure a number of folks would thank you for it.

This was my first experience trying to work with Wikipedia and also my last.

As far as I can tell from what you said (and the goggle), the P, J text was serialised in the UK, then as a book in the US called the P and B, and at the same time another completely different book called the P and B came out in the UK - is that right? The "1912 US Version" of the P and B that's on Gutenberg is very different from P, J, but has big chunks the same and Rupert Smith in - is that the US release of P, J then? Is the UK P and B more different still?

When you move an article that's on afd, could you please create a redirect from Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/OldTitle to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/NewTitle instead of moving the afd discussion? When the various warnings began to be used, I tried out two variations: messages on their own and messages with a visual component. In a number of cases, people who had received a number of image-free warnings of rising seriousness as they committed vandalism insisted when they came back after a block that they had not noticed the warnings. (I found that myself. Recently someone was leaving messages on my talk page. Because their messages were being succeeded by others before I had a chance to read them I regularly missed them. They then got annoyed as to why I was not replying. Quite simply they were lost in the text.)

However when I used warnings with images, a couple of things happened:

1. Vandalism often stopped without the need to go a grade higher in warnings, or
2. the vandal came back to ask "what are you talking about?" (ie., they noticed the message)
3. No-one blocked (and I mean no-one) then turned around and said "but I never saw the message".

I have dealt with a lot of vandalism and frankly I've found that using warnings with images far more effective than using image-less ones. In fact I've given up completely using imageless ones because I have found them so useless. It is vital IMHO that important messages such as warnings look different from ordinary text on a screen. These edits are just to create a formatting style consistent with the style used in the majority of "featured articles", and to stay conformant with the Wikipedia style guides. Sometimes there are several ways described in the style guides. I'm trying to get a list of the guide's text that concern internal formatting together so I can better answer this question with something better than "personal preference". The best I can do today, is to say compare the style I'm editing towards with the style used in the featured articles. I have noticed that with only one exception so far (that being Hubble Space Telescope ) that my edits towards internal style are left intact. The reason I prefer *[http://www.somewebsite.com/ the website] over * [http://www.somewebsite.com/ the website] is that this prevents the situation where the editor displays the "*" alone on a line when the URL text is long. OK, I think you may have been relying on erroneous information that 70%-80% posted by one bureaucrat on the Bcrat page, but that is wrong. The gray area is AT LEAST 75% unless there is extreme behavior, like proven soxs, or bogus voters. Opposing for too few edits does not fall in that category. Hi, I've been ploughing through some of the un-started P.G. Wodehouse books (which I see you've kicked off a lot of yourself, well done); have got up to Money For Nothing, which currently redirects to Money for Nothing, the Dire Straits album; now, knowing you're a bit more experienced than me, I was wondering if you could advise - would it be best to a) hijack Money For Nothing, providing a link to Money for Nothing, or b) start up a Money For Nothing (novel) page, and do a redirection page (in which case, should it be at For or for, and should the for be renamed to MfN (album)?) I want to warn you that Philmanac is not always accurate in its history, and erroneously claims many things. I have corrected some of the errors in Abreu Camp. They were pretty minor, and had to do with the history. It's unfortunate that there is not a better guide. Maybe PSA should start a PhilWiki.

Well, there are other books on Philmont. Furthermore, I worked at Abreu, and the history is written all over the walls. There are materials in the staff box that document the family history, the building of the cabins, and other miscellaneous things. The cantina construction is firsthand knowledge, from a Tansatlantic Council Advisor who helped build the cantina and took pictures of it. Those are now at the camp. There are records for each camp too, in Base. Philmanac is not primary source, although the pictures are original research and cannot be cited.

I am seeking your guidance and advice on a particular issue. Mahuri page on wikipedia was initiated by me, and I have contributed to the page from time to time. As per policy of the wikipedia anyone can use the contents of wikipedia, but I understand that use of such contents should indicate the source, that is, the wikipedia. The contents of the page Mahuri have been used in the site mahurivaisya without giving any reference to wikipedia - though I am glad that they have used our contents. In this case, a problem may arise at a future date if that website takes a stand that the contents of page Mahuri on wikipedia have been copied from that site and thus violates copyrights. In an alternative scenario, a user here may tag our Mahuri page with copyright violation under the impression that our contents have been copied from that site, reference to which was given by me long back as an external link when that site was not active and having only a welcome page. Although I am not aware of any such issue, which wikipedians may have encountered in the past, I believe that such a situation may have arisen earlier too. Actually the bias is on your part. James is often cited for his disingenuous and calculated comments. I posted one such misleading statement (the source being http://www.opinionjournal.com/best/?id=110003842) so my edit was and is a factual statement. I loathe organizations such as moveon.org and will engage any left leaning liberal in an honest debate, but I do not appreciate or need lies from Mr. Taranto and his ilk which provide no constructive purpose in the political discourse.

Another recent example, Joel Stein said, "I'm not advocating that we spit on returning veterans like they did after the Vietnam War, but we shouldn't be celebrating people for doing something we don't think was a good idea. All I'm asking is that we give our returning soldiers what they need: hospitals, pensions, mental health and a safe, immediate return. But, please, no parades."

And James, utilizing the above quote then writes, "Now that Stein has broken the taboo against showing contempt for servicemen." Obviously Mr. Taranto is caught in another lie. The truth is Joel specifically says he does not advocate showing contempt.

Would it be possible to host a Philwiki somewhere? It seems like it could be a very effective, dynamic guide for staffers and potential hikers. So many websites that are incomplete, or opinionated, while forums are nightmares. Likewise, Philmanac has errors and has to be reprinted with each update. Meanwhile, so much information about Philmont is inappropriate for Wikipedia.

Alternatively, We could start one on WikiCities. Getting editors for the project should not be hard, with so many fan groups in existence. Getting the basic material is not too hard - there are sources available, while Philmont's records are also usable. Beside this the administrative elements of PhilWiki could all be taken from Wikipedia, to limit the amount of work needed to complete this.

Hi, I have just recieved a mesage with the second world war Nazi flag on it, Apparently i have edited pages of Wikipedia?

I was looking at the stormfront page yesterday but i have made NO corrections and i have Not edited any of the pages.

The only time i have editted a page was on the Collossus code breakers when i added an "E" to "Eastcote" as it is my home town and it was spelt incorrectly!

Okay, so you've reverted my changes. I personally felt the changes were a benefit to the article. "A lot of information" was not removed, however some un-encylopedic information was. Here is why I did what I did to the article: The "trail" almost every single peice of information that applies to the trail camps equally applies to the staffed camps. Having the information under the trail camp subsection alone is highly improper. This is why I moved it right under the camp heading, because it applies to both. Information that I removed such as the "Nalgene Tree" while a nice little tidbit about the camp, is still highly POV and non-encylopedic, the same thing goes exactly for the "radio transmission entertainment" (such as broacasting results of the Tour de France, while it may have occured it still is non-notable) or that Cimmaron may or may not actually take part in listening to or making fun of it. Not to mention saying that the swap box is full of green beans and dehydrated apples, it isn't notable, saying there is a swap box alone is enough. Radagast83 00:08, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
