Five Articles

Hi Martin. Thanks for adding the article on the DeWint House to Wikipedia on July 19 2006. This article ties in nicely with the Tappan, New York article. I also tried to contribute the following articles - See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation/2006-07-27 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation/2006-07-28 - which would tied important events in this time period. (Please use Tappan, New York for reference) They are as follows.

  • The Orangetown Resolutions Articles_for_creation/2006-07-27
  • The Old 76 House Articles_for_creation/2006-07-27
  • Macy Deming Articles_for_creation/2006-07-28
  • Haring Adams (Deming) House Articles_for_creation/2006-07-28
  • Cereo Articles_for_creation/2006-07-28

Thanking you in advance for your assistance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.203.40.2 (talk • contribs)

Waggle Dance

Dear Martin

In the article on the "Waggle Dance" there appears the following statement:

"it is now known that a round dance is simply a waggle dance with a very short waggle run"

There are no references nor any supporting documentation for this blanket generalization. "It is now known" -- when? and by whom? I am not saying that it is not true, it is. The information is very new and may require the entomology textbooks to be rewritten. I am just wondering who posted this and what their sources are.

Admin coaching request pages

Please comment here. Thanks! --Fang Aili talk 18:25, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for helping update the list! I'm working on matching people, so hopefully it won't take months to get to you. :) --Fang Aili talk
Er, wait, nevermind. I'll match you with a student soon. --Fang Aili talk 18:35, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. I can't wait until all the old requests are filled-- then the "project coordinator" will not really be necessary. I have sent out several messages asking if people are still interested in coaching, so if one is you'll be first to get a student. Cheers, Fang Aili talk 18:41, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've matched you with User:Khukri. Please contact him to get started! --Fang Aili talk 18:52, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Evening Martin, first of all thanks for agreeing to take this on. I'm not necessarily looking for adminship at the moment. Not sure if you read my reply on Fang Aili's page, so here you go gratuitous cut n paste alert. I recently self nominated for an RFA as I believed it would aid my work looking after the WikiProject on user warnings. I withdrew my nomination after a couple of opposes came in and my thoughts can be seen on my talk page. Having sat back and thought about it, I didn't remove my name from the coaching as I think that this can aid me in gaining a greater understanding in policy and practice, and does not necessarily require someone to have the mop n bucket as the end goal. About me, been here in one form or another for nigh on two years, first logged in edits were exactly a year ago today! I've around 4,000 edits mainly in RC patrolling, equiped with most of the vandal tools. About 2 months back I took over the WP:UW project as it had stalled and with one other editor have got it to a position now where we are a month or so away from overhauling all warning templates. What do I want...... not sure to be honest, wikipedia for all it's good points isn't the most intuitive of websites, and it can take quite a while to find pertinant policies on vandalism, who's doing what, who looks after waht etc. So I think I'd like to pick your brains for the secret squirrel stuff. Please have a look through my history, project work, RfA and talk pages and it'll give you a better idea of who I am. My e-mail is enables, can be got hold of on IRC or MSN. Anyway thanks again and I'll speak to you soon. Cheers Khukri (talk . contribs) 19:20, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Posting again to avoid archival - sorry for the delay Khukri, I've just got some unexpected stuff happening in real life. Martinp23 23:06, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Weekly Notification!

This is just a friendly reminder that Wikipedia Weekly has been released with a new episode!

Actually, it's a couple of new episodes. I've been moving to an place closer to campus (my commute was getting to me) and hence, the reminder message was a little slow in coming out. So slow we put out 2 where before we had 1.

Anyways, all is good now, here's the new episodes!

As always you can download old episodes and more at http://wikipediaweekly.com/!

Please spread the word about Wikipedia Weekly, we're trying to spread the word so that people know about the project, we've got some cool guests lined up and it makes it much more fun if people tune in!

NPWatcher

Howdy there. I added myself to the approval list. I think that I have a lot to offer Wikipedia by monitoring new pages, and that I would be able to do a faster job if I were able to use NPWatcher. --Adam Riley Talk 01:04, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NPWatcher Request

Hi! I was just wondering if I could get approval for NPWatcher. I know it says you must have 300 edits, but, does that mean mainspace? I only have half of that. But, I do Newpages patrol a lot, and most of the User Talk edits are for users that people have placed a {{db}} or similar tag. I think that if I get NPWatcher, I can build my experience with dealing with issues, and more newpages that violate any rule will be taken off.

Thanks!

Cheers,

Tyson Moore es 01:27, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the approval :)

Naughty boy! The blocking admin cant review an unblock request silly! Thats what they are there for, a second opinion lol!  Glen  09:40, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nag

Well, you said "feel free to nag," so here I am.  :) My request for NPWatcher approval has been pending for a week, so this is just a friendly reminder asking you to look at the Check Page. --Russ (talk) 12:01, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bot

Can I ask a favour? There's some discussion over at Wikipedia_talk:Featured_article_candidates#Multi_FA_template (mostly provoked by me) about a bot to carry out FA status updating. Could you cast your eye over the proposal (near the bottom) to check that it is technically possible? I know it should be possible, but I've purposedly stayed away from bot writing, so I don't know the system limitations and permissions required - I can't see it would need admin privs but I might have missed something. I don't want to get further into writing the template if the bot isn't going to be practical. Cheers, Yomanganitalk 13:16, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Juan Cole

So what is the next step in the mediation process? csloat 17:16, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Addressing distortions during mediation?

Isarig's statement has made several outright distortions of my position as well as of the issues at stake. I am tempted to address them one by one on the mediation page but I do not think that will be productive. Should I just wait until all have said what they have to say and then list the distortions? Or wait until you summarize each position and then only address those distortions actually relevant to the contested issues? Some of his comments (e.g. charges related to the Valerie Plame article) seem totally unrelated to the issue at hand and while I feel the need to address them for the purpose of truth, I don't see how that will help the mediation process. Similar issues may come up when the other two disputants have their say. Your guidance on this will be helpful; thanks! csloat 22:33, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your Bot Warned my IP

This is the warning: User_talk:203.187.209.207

D I promise you I did not vandalise the Solapur page! The bot FAQ says others might be using my IP. This is my desktop PC at home (not a cyber cafe or networked PC). Are IPs still shared? Can I/we do something to avoid this? I do always log in to my account to make edits. Anagha 17:43, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, that helps! Thanks :) Anagha 14:09, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of coatofarms

Howdy - I noticed that your bot MartinBotIII is removing the coatofarms tag from images, leaving many of them with no copyright tag at all. For those images left with no copyright tag, it seems to me that your bot should also be adding {{nld}} and notifying the uploader. Otherwise someone else will have to go through and check all the images that your bot edited. Of course, there could be a very good reason for not doing this that I'm not aware of :-) -SCEhardT 21:17, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hrm, well it looks like OrphanBot is currently tagging coatofarms images with nld while leaving the coatofarms tag also. If you two could coordinate it would cut the overall number of edits in half. I'll let Carnildo know also. -SCEhardT 22:12, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Update: Nevermind - I see you've already asked Carnildo about it :-) -SCEhardT 22:16, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NPWatcher suggestions

Thanks for enabling me, Martin. I've tried the software and I have a few suggestions already. On the Maintenance tab, I'd suggest {{Uncategorized}} as an additional option. Also, instead of the button arrangement that only allows you to insert one tag per page, how about having checkboxes so that, if necessary, a user could place more than one maintenance notice at the same time? --Russ (talk) 21:30, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(in)competent editors

Hi,

You raised an imprtant issue on my talk page. I replied there, but I will repeat my reply here, to make sure you see it.

Voting on matters on which one is incompetent is certanly NOT voting in good faith. Such users and such attitudes should be discouraged. Such behaviour patterns drive away highly qualified editors and lower the quality of the information on WP. The good guys get exhausted trying to clean up the little piles of dog poop left behind. linas 01:17, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Naradasupreme

Hey. Remember Naradasupreme (talk · contribs)? Looks like he is back as 84.40.234.115 (talk · contribs). He blanked the sock puppet warnings sometime today. :: Colin Keigher (Talk) {{{alias}}} 18:43, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah. It is beyond me why this guy wants to keep clearing his old account and talk pages. If he was smart, he'd leave the pages alone and start fresh without going back to them. I don't care if the guy edits on Wikipedia, provided he is within the set policies. However, I doubt that will ever happen. :: Colin Keigher (Talk) {{{alias}}} 18:59, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Totally-disputed template

Hi Martinp23, I see that the TfD was closed as a 'weak keep', did that happen to include the very large number of entries deleted by an annonymous user: [1]? I'd like to see all the votes counted and become a part of the archived debate...perhaps that section can be restored, counted and become part of the archive. Thanks! Thanks - I've made the archive page and fixed the main desk. The reason it happens is that the bot sometimes dies half way through an archive due to my unstable internet, or (maybe more likely at times) wikipedia stops working. Hello

Hi MArtin, Many thanks for the welcome! Rer my own case, it may well be that I can come to a reasonable settlement having had a frank exchange with khaosworks, but I won't take any cases until I have decided what to do about that thanks. I think it is an excellent idea to have some form of representation, and look foward to getting involved in due course. Many thanks, Rob 19:30, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eek!

Please be careful when removing {{coatofarms}} and it's ilk from images, as in this instance the image ended up without a licence tag! Thanx. 68.39.174.238 23:27, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Department Store Vandal

Thank you for the suggestion, I'll get on it right away. By the way, I myself have pretty much no knowledge of this subject either, I've never even shopped at a Lord & Taylor in my life (though I think I walked through the store that used to be in Manchester, Connecticut on the way to the mall once...) It is due to this fact that I insisted to the other editors working on the article to dig up citations to differentiate the fact from the fiction on the page. I guess even vandalism can have some positive effects! LOL! --Elipongo (Talk|contribs) 19:27, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
