Your request for Translation

Hello Jose, it's done. --GnuDoyng (talk) 08:51, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jose, my article Shen-kuang-szu Incident was tagged with {{copyedit}} by someone and his explanations were given in my talk page. To be honest I don't know how to improve it since English is not my first language and I can't really tell bad grammar from good. Can you please help me correct the grammar mistakes in it? Thanks in advance. --GnuDoyng (talk) 09:03, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done The grammar has been fixed into proper English. --Jose77 (talk) 06:07, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Sir (Ninhao)!

I am Schmiddtchen from the German Wikipedia.

I've come across a word which could or could not be chinese and I'd like to grasp it - but my humble language skills fail me in verifying it. Unfortunately, the german wikipedia lacks active native chinese speakers (or they do not label themselves as such). I've found you via your Babel category and have come to you hopeing that you can help me with this. I'd be very grateful if you could take a look at my question - many many thanks in advance!

The word I've stumbled across on a taiwanese domain is "geqoo" - exactly like that, written in Latin chars. Now I've tried looking it up by transcribing it into pinyin but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right:

What I've come across is two things: 歌曲 (gēqǔ) - "song" and as a part: 各取所需 (gèqǔsuǒxū) - "everyone takes what he needs". Is this correct? What do you (as a native speaker) think of when you see "Geqoo" - do you think of "song"? Or of the first part of that small sentence? Or of something completely different?

It would be very very nice if you could give me an answer either here or on my talk page on the German Wikipedia.

Many thanks again and have a good day, --Schmiddtchen (talk) 08:20, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks alot for your answer on my talk page. So in summary the word on the taiwanese domain probably was meant to read "song"?
Cheers and have a good day, Schmiddtchen (talk) 11:51, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Presumably. --Jose77 (talk) 22:48, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Again thanks for your time :) Best regards, Schmiddtchen (talk) 15:33, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Translation of the content

I tried to translate it into following:

I hope it will help. Best, --Enerelt (talk) 04:33, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dungan glossary

Jose,

You mentioned your work on a Dungan glossary. I hope you do have access to published sources: there have been a few Dungan-Russian, Russian-Dungan, and Dungan-Dungan dictionaries, and I suppose that linguists from Urumqi and Lanzhou have published something in Chinese too. I don't know what country you are in, but if you are in the USA, you should be able to get a few books via interlibrary loan from one of the university library that has them. I know that U. of Washington library in Seattle has a few, as their catalog search shows: http://uwashington.worldcat.org/search?qt=worldcat_org_all&q=dungan+language

In particular, the item that appears there as "Khuėĭzŭ ĭu̇i︠a︡ndi lėĭu̇an khuadi︠a︡n" by I︠U︡ T︠S︡unvazo is a Dungan-only dictionary, "Kratkiĭ dungansko-russkiĭ slovarʹ" is the Dungan-Russian dictionary, and "Russko-dunganskiĭ slovarʹ" is of course Russian-Dungan. And then there are a couple of books in English: "The Dungan dialect : an introduction and morphology", and "Soviet Dungan : the Chinese language of central Asia : alphabet, phonology, morphology" both by Svetlana Rimsky-Korsakoff Dyer. I suspect that these two books (which I have not seen) are the main source for Victor H. Mair's article from which you have taken the text samples. Her book on Shivaza also has quite a few Dungan/Chinese/English parallel texts. I may have (not very good) photocopies of some pages of this literature; if you want me to email you something as scans in JPG format, you can contact me directly. Vmenkov (talk) 08:20, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am not in the USA so I am unable to access the content. Thanks for the references though, it may yet be very helpful for me in the near future.

Since the Dungans are muslims, the word "Jesus" is probably mentioned in the Koran as "Isa" but that needs to be confirmed though. --Jose77 (talk) 08:48, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

--Jose77 (talk) 08:45, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Are you saying you can't even access the library catalog web site (I have no problem accessing it from Australia, for example - I don't think it has restrictions on who can access it), or simply that interlibrary loan from a US library would not be feasible for you? Anyway, most of those books should exist in major libraries in several countries - I am pretty sure that both Australian National Library in Canberra and China's National Library in Beijing have quite a few of them. Incidentally, Svetlana Rimsky-Korsakoff Dyer (the main western expert on the Dungans) has donated her library to Belgian Jesuits - implying that somebody in Western Europe cares for this stuff as well.
