The term "sysop" implies Wikimedia software/system management and administration. I'm curious. Is that what you do? If it's not too much to ask, what exactly does your delegation as a sysop for the foreign language Wikipedias you listed mean? Obviously it can't involve reviewing article/page content or adherence to Wikimedia/Wikipedia rules and policies. So, can you say what your duties and responsibilities as a sysop are with respect to the foreign language Wikipedias you listed? I'm truly curious; I'm trying to breathe new life into the Tok Pisin Wikipedia/Wiktionary, and there are functions there that require reliable sysop assistance. [[User:K. Kellogg-Smith|K. The Tok Pisin Wikipedia and Wiktionary are very worthwhile efforts, and you are to be applauded for your work. But I think you'll agree that both have a very real need to be brought up to date and extensively revised. For example, the left frame on the main page needs the translations to be completed. For another, it appears that virtually all the articles listed are either one-line placeholders or ultra-short articles written by students of Tok Pisin, and with no relation to Papua New Guinea and the Melanesian islands where the use of Tok Pisin is endemic. And that's only the beginning. |

I'd become interested in learning Tok Pisin about twenty years ago when I was aboard an oceanographic research ship doing research in Indonesia and the Philippines, with a potential U.S. Navy contract to do research off Papua New Guinea. The contract never materialized, so I put the Mahalic "Introduction to New Guinea Pidgin" aside and continued to concentrate on reading and speaking Indonesian instead. Having grown up in Hawai'i, I recently discovered the Hawai'ian Wikipedia, which is basically a shell with very few actual articles. Unlike the Tok Pisin Wikipedia however, the Hawai'ian Wikipedia has a well structured framework that the TPI Wikipedia would do well to consider. In particular, the objective of the Hawai'ian Wikipedia is to have all articles written by native or learned speakers of the language. That's a rather large task, considering that there are less than 5,000 native speakers of the Hawai'ian language, Hawai'ian and non-Hawai'ian alike. |

I've only just started looking around, but after only a short time I've found that there are a quite a number of potential sources for well-written, authentic Tok Pisin articles, relevant articles written by learned or native speakers of the language. And I've found several sources that have interesting photographs available as well. All are related to Papua New Guinea and Melanesia. |

As a user, I can only go so far in making changes to the encyclopedia and dictionary, so I'm going to request permission for temporary Administrator status for the Tok Pisin Wikipedia. My experience with Wikipedia is fairly recent, but I've written a small number of articles in the English and Simple English Wikipedias, made a correction of fact in an article in the German Wikipedia, added some definitions to the English Wiktionary, and listed a plagiarized article in the English Wikipedia as an article for deletion. I have extensive professional (i.e., paid) experience in software development and programming, Internet and corporate intranet web design and server maintenance, and many years in technical writing. |

Lack of courtesy (and competency in the instances I've been involved with) of Wikipedia officialdom is becoming an issue with me. I brought the issue of Shanel not responding to my answer to her (on her talk page) up to "Danny", and to what I considered to be an off-the-wall, "Catch-22" suggestion from Sean Whitton (by back-channel Internet e-mail, not via Wikipedia's talk pages, by the way) that I need to get "community consensus" for my request. Very obviously Whitton hadn't bothered to read my request (I doubt if he even knew where to look, based on his several week-long foot dragging to my very simple request for finding out the name of the sysop(s) for the TPI Wikis), where I thought I stated very clearly that there <i>was no Tok Pisin community</i>. Talk about an Administrator (or whatever Whitton is) sending a dog to chase its tail ... |

Anyway, I made a note about my two Wikipedia Administrator incidents (there's a third, one-year old, Administrator that I have little regard for its competency as the result of an AfD I submitted in May) on Board candidate "Danny"'s Q&A page. I received a short, courteous reply from him, in which he said "if he were still a Steward" he'd see that I got the permissions I needed. I replied in turn with hopes that perhaps he could talk to someone about getting the ball rolling on getting me temp sysop permissions for the two TPI Wikis. Nonetheless, I doubt that anything will be done about it. |

Re the two TPI Wikis, I've come up with and implemented (on a test basis) quite a few of my ideas/suggestions about the TPI Wikipedia (for example, bilinguality), and have been working daily for many weeks now to update the Wiki's Main page with current affairs in <i>tok pisin<i>, and with regional photos from Wiki Commons files. In my opinion, that section of the front page, the only sections of the page that I can directly edit (the page was locked sometime in the past, and I don't have the permissions required to unlock it) is looking quite good. But that's only my opinion. |

In addition to my daily work on the TPI Wikipedia's "Fes fran", I've also been busy trying to drum up support for a WikiProject Melanesia "Tok Pisin" community in the EN Wikipedia by dropping "please join us" suggestions on the talk pages of users who have written or otherwise shown interest in Melanesia. That effort has resulted in User:Wantok (an excellent, but 'turned-down' candidate for Adminstrator) setting up a sub-page of the Project page for discussions about how to reorganize and revitalize the two TPI Wikis, and another Melanesia-experienced user ("Aliasd") to join in as well. To be honest with you though, Jose, I've got a major project of my own that I've put aside for far too long now, one that actually first got me started with using Wikipedia, and one that now I <i><b>absolutely must</b></i> get back to completing (see my EN Wikipedia article, <b>Tip wage credit</b>). There are state policies involved that I want to work to get changed, and my 'tip wage credit' article is fundamental as basic information justifying changes in my state's wage and hour laws. If Wikipedia's administrative infrastructure is incapable of working quickly to meet my legitimate requests and needs (or anyone else's for that matter) for temporary sysop permissions, then I'll have no other option but to wave goodbye to the TPI revitalization project and go back to work to go off and get my tip wage credit project completed. |

I've become a "true believer" in the bilingual Melanesian/Oceania encyclopedia project and the multi-lingual <i>tok pisin</i> dictionary. So if I do come back to the two TPI Wikis project, it might quite possibly be to use the project as a test bed to set up an independent, Wiki software-based, Melanesia/Oceania encyclopedia and dictionary. As you know, the complete Wikipedia software package is available for downloading. I have a web-designer nephew on Saipan that has his own servers that will support the software, and I have the technical ability to use the Wiki software to set up the encyclopedia and dictionary as independent Internet entities. And if I do so, I will have available to me all the permissions I need to do creative work with the encyclopedia and dictionary — and I won't have to keep "banging my head against a brick wall" as the saying goes in dealing with what I can't help to feel is an overly-bureaucratized Wikipedia Administration. |

The project I desperately need to get back to is to write a presentation based on my still-to-be-completed "Tip wage credit" article, the presentation to be given to socially-oriented political action groups in my state (Maryland). The 90-day period should be enough for me to "shake the bushes" so to speak to get others and their ideas involved in the TPI Wikis' revitalization process, create a few more sysop/admins to help out, and "get the ball rolling" so to speak. Then I'll be able to divide my time between the TPI project and my own project, which I need to complete before the Fall state legislative session here. |
