I recently uploaded this image from the German Wikipedia. On the German wikipedia, the license had the letter 'c' in grey with a strike through. I didn't know what that corresponded to in the english one. Could you please check it out in the German Wikipedia and apply a suitable license tag.

Hi! My name is Zoltán Szőke. I work for the National Archives of Hungary (former ICCS member state!!!). I wrote my M.A. thesis on the ICCS (dealing mainly with the "controversial" role of the Hungarian delegation...) According to tens of thousands of primary archival sources there was an "of" in the commission’s name instead of a "for". It should be changed in the title of the article, too. I just couldn’t find out how. I'll be back later with more.

I'm not sure what you'd like me to do for you but whatever it is it's unlikely I can help. I merely edited the article to make it better. My normal activity is adding pictures to articles so I don't how to rename an article. Thanks for writing. Yes, the pic was made by me and is PD. I've changed the PD copyright message to the one it should have been, and added a sentence about how I made the pic. I really appreciate the messages from all of you (Guinog, Netsnipe and Redvers). I'm calmed down now, I only got in a strop because this has never happened to me since I joined WP in January 2003 (haven't I been lucky!). I know what to do now (i.e. post the Unblock Notice with full details). I also know that I can wait 24 hours (which would be quite a good thing because my wife complains frequently about how little cooking/gardening/DIY I do) and contact my ISP for a static IP and try rebooting. This is a relatively new feature and I vaguely remember hearing that applying this sort of block might actually fix some bugs in some blocks. I'm now partially blocked (2pm UK time), by which I mean that I get a block on about one in five articles. Stranger still, the block is sometimes gone on a second attempt to edit an article that was refused first time. Gee, what a puzzle! OK, here's my solution. (I've not tried the idea of unplugging the modem only because I may have a solution). My idea is successful at the moment and seems to have had no effect on my other computer operations (such as running my Norton virus checker, playing music and browsing the net). I needed to get rid of that "nasty" IP of 195.188.152.16 that I seem to have been allocated by my ISP (Telewest Broadband on a cable under the pavement). A cold reboot (including turning power off my modem) does not change the IP. So I had an idea.

I am running on a proxy server (although I haven’t the slightest idea what that means). So I got rid of the Proxy and now my IP has changed to 66.249.**.** (although some ISP finding sites tell me it’s 62.30.***.**) (better keep it a secret!) and all is well. I can edit all articles.

Here’s what I did: I went to any net site (Google will do), and from the top-of-screen menu selected TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS/CONNECTIONS/LAN SETTING, and removed the tick in the PROXY SERVER box (my browser is IE Version 6). The IP has now changed to the "good" one I showed above and all seems to be well. The change away from a proxy server does not seem to have affected my other computer operations. (I hope my ISP will not disapprove of what I’ve done).

Can anyone tell me how this trick works because I'm puzzled. I know LAN stands for Local Area Network but I'm not on a network, this is just a single home computer connected to nothing else (except the net, a printer and a scanner). As a matter of interest, I find my IP address by typing “my ip” into Google and it tells me. Well I doubt that I can give you the best answer, but a proxy server is an intermediate computer that your ISP (or company) manages to help speed up internet access and reduce network load. If you have the proxy server enabled, when you ask for a web page, say http://news.bbc.co.uk, instead of going directly to the source, your browser asks the proxy server for it. If someone else on your ISP has recently asked for the same page, then the proxy server will already have stored a recent copy and it won't even bother to ask the BBC for an updated version and just give you its cached version. If you ask for an obscure or unique page, such as editing a minor page on Wikipedia, your proxy server probably won't have a local copy and so will have to ask Wikipedia for the HTML, then pass it on to you.

In practice most people using your ISP will have the proxy enabled, so irrespective of their individual dynamic IPs, Wikipedia will see most of the page requests as coming from the IP of the proxy server. If your local vandal is also using the proxy server, the proxy requests could end up being block, but cutting out the middle man makes your edits more individual. -- Solipsist 22:19, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
