Cracked windscreen

Just out of pure curiosity, after you removed it from the SAA article — is a cracked windscreen that common to not be an 'incident'? I'd have imagined otherwise, or are the fail-safes good enough? Thanks, dewet| 15:46, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I removed it simply because a cracked windscreen is not important enought to feature in an encyclopedia. I'm not saying it's unimportant to the airline or the passengers, I'm only saying we need not feature such incidents in WP. I would guess every airline has had such things happen so we'd have a cracked windsereen or a burst tyre entry for every airline. We keep the Incidents heading for much more serious stuff. Thanks for asking - Adrian Pingstone 15:52, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have no problem with the removal; as I said this was for my own curiousity. You seem knowledgeable about the airline industry, which is why I posed my question to you. I was just wondering whether it is actually just trivial, or indeed a common serious occurence? The same for burst tyres. dewet| 15:55, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I worked on Airbus A320, A330 and A340 wing design at BAe as an aerodynamicist but I'm in no way connected with airline matters, just interested. So, sorry, I can't help you. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 14:26, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Diyarbakir

A recent user edit on the Diyarbakir page removed most of the pictures that had been there and replaced them with new ones. I don't think some of the new ones are of the same quality as the old ones (some are low quality scans) but don't want to "be bold" as I uploaded most of the earlier ones and may be biased. Your Solomon's judgement would be appreciated. Old piccies are viewable at [1] Gerry Lynch 21:04, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Advice

Hi, hoping you can offer some advice. I puchased (from an aviation collector's estate) an original black and white photo of a Miles Whitney Straight, which I thought would be good to illustrate both that article, and the history of Aerial Topdressing. The problem is potential copyright. On the back is the stamp of Whites Aviation, (but no assertion of copyright). Whites aviation is a firm which came into existence after the (apparently pre war) photo appears to have been taken. Leo White was airplane buff and used to collect photos himself, and the estate included several hundred of his photos. I contacted the successor firm, sending a copy of the photo, and asking them if they owned copyright. Twice. 6 months ago. I have heard nothing back.

Would I be safe to put the image on Wikipedia?Winstonwolfe 00:25, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking the time to answer anyhow, enoyoy the break :-)Winstonwolfe 04:25, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Birthday, Arpingstone! -- preschooler@heart 23:05, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for editing my entry. A quick note, though. I assume you removed "massive amount" because it sounded POV. Do you have an idea for alternative wording that indicates the amount of messages without removing it entirely? Also, I think your rewrite has a stray comma introducing a clause that isn't actually a clause. I'll go chance that last bit. Please answer on my talk page. - Mgm|(talk) 15:52, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Afriqiyah Airways

I recently uploaded this image from the German Wikipedia. On the German wikipedia, the license had the letter 'c' in grey with a strike through. I didn't know what that corresponded to in the english one. Could you please check it out in the German Wikipedia and apply a suitable license tag.

Thanks for the fix

Strausbaugh article

Thank you for cleaning up this page! It had been massacred and looked terrible. Nice to have somebody with an EYE around! --ITech 21:19, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photo related proposal

Hi Adrian, I thought you might be interested in my proposal for a Bristol WikiProject photo challenge/contest thing. Joe D (t) 03:50, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately I don't want to be "challenged" in my retirement (please imagine a smiley here) but thanks anyway for asking - Adrian Pingstone 05:40, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry

Adrian: I apologize for my bad manners. I am fairly new to editing others' work and you have taught me a valuable lesson. Thank you! User:Argos'Dad

Thank you for such a graceful apology, fully accepted of course. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 22:14, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! My name is Zoltán Szőke. I work for the National Archives of Hungary (former ICCS member state!!!). I wrote my M.A. thesis on the ICCS (dealing mainly with the "controversial" role of the Hungarian delegation...) According to tens of thousands of primary archival sources there was an "of" in the commission’s name instead of a "for". It should be changed in the title of the article, too. I just couldn’t find out how. I'll be back later with more.

I'm not sure what you'd like me to do for you but whatever it is it's unlikely I can help. I merely edited the article to make it better. My normal activity is adding pictures to articles so I don't how to rename an article. It wouild be best to go to the Help Desk here and type your question in - Adrian Pingstone 15:47, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the reaction. Furthermore see Wikipedia:Help desk--Jaak Nijssen 10:45, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just read"Adrian: I apologize for my bad manners." - so: I sincerely apologize for my bad manners.

In my article, the first step is now made. Thank you for the help.

The second filling in of the planned work is coming soon--Jaak Nijssen 10:45, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your apologies. I'm sure the article will become a good one as more material is added. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 16:05, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your peccary image

Since your photograph of the peccary was released in the public domain, I thought it would be an excellent candidate to accompany the main page of my new animal short fiction magazine (still in the works). Just so you know. :) Here's the link. - Mgm|(talk) 19:53, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for using my peccary pic. As you will have noticed the focus is very poor on the bigger pic, but luckily the thumbnmail looks reasonable. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 09:08, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! You supported the Hummingbird Hawk-moth FPC (like everyone else who commented), but HighInBC uploaded an edit that absolutely no-one commented on. I can't promote the image without knowing which version to promote, so now I have to ask everyone which version they prefer. Would you mind specifying which image you are supporting? Thanks. Contrails referenced in newspaper

Note that I originally just posted this to talk:contrails, but saw your name repeated in the edit history, though it might be of interest to you.

Some people theorize vapour trails are chemical or biological agents being secretly released in the air, says Wikipedia, an Internet encyclopedia. Chemtrails refer to systematic, high-altitude dumping of unknown substances for some undisclosed purpose. Theories proposed for their purpose include atmospheric and weather modification, biological warfare, mind control and military uses. -- Kerry Hall's "Contrails: a problem all their own", Parksville Qualicum News

When I thanked the newspaper for referencing us in the article, the reporter replied that Phil Austin, at cloud physicist at University of British Columbia (who was quoted in the story), thought this was a good explaination of the topic. Thumbs up, everyone who worked on this! -- Zanimum 17:12, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Aeroplane pictures

Hi. I'm a great admirer of your photos and see you at Featured Pictures quite a lot. I'd be interested if you could review my picture gallery, especially Image:TornadoTakeoffJM.jpg and see if you think any of them might be eligible for FP status. Be as critical as you like, I am looking for honest feedback here. Thanks. --Guinnog 11:13, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your time and trouble in reviewing my pictures. I appreciate your comments. I was thinking the same thing myself about getting a better camera already. Just finding the money! Thanks again for your trouble. --Guinnog 16:20, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question about a picture

Hello !

I have opened a discussion here because of a change that was done about a picture you took.

Greetings, Djam 15:43, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Other animals?

I contacted you a while back about your peccary image. Do you have any other PD images of interesting and or unusual animals? - Mgm|(talk) 22:12, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at these articles:Megabat Pteropus Capybara Donkey Elephant Dendrobates azureus Poison Dart Frog Giraffe Goat antelope Gorilla Lion Meerkat Black Howler Lemur Zebra Okapi African Penguin Prairie dog Pygmy Hippopotamus
and for the reptiles I've got: Common Collared Lizard Crocodile Cyclura Monitor lizard Central Bearded Dragon Plumed basilisk Sailfin lizard Standing's day gecko Aldabra Giant Tortoise Box Turtle Cuora Uromastyx Yellow-headed day gecko
Not including the fish, insects and birds I've illustrated. Hope this helps - Adrian Pingstone 20:18, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That helps. Thanks! - Mgm|(talk) 18:53, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've discovered a way to see all my pics since I began on WP in January 2003. Look here for the list. Beware that a tiny number are other peoples pics that I've improved so just check I say I took it - Adrian Pingstone 17:17, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
... and of course there is also the Gallery tab that should be visible near the top a User page on Commons. That links to one of Duesentrieb's tools that shows all the images they have uploaded to Commons. It should give a result like this - of course for a user like Adrian, that gives a considerable number of pages to look through @-) -- Solipsist 20:15, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have some more information on Image:Gem.pebbles.800pix.jpg? Did you make it? If not, could you please indicate a source for it. I know it was uploaded long ago, but if you could clear up the copyright info on it, I'd be most grateful. --Kevin_b_er 03:55, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for writing. Yes, the pic was made by me and is PD. I've changed the PD copyright message to the one it should have been, and added a sentence about how I made the pic. Scanners produce very photo-like results, have a look at my jade rhino on Image scanner for another example - Adrian Pingstone 14:41, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FPC Candidate (Siberian tiger)

A comment was recently posted by Samsara on the Siberian tiger FPC. It concerned placing the image in another article (see the subpage for the exact comment). I have now added the image to the stretching article, so you may or may not consider changing your vote (this is just to inform you of the change). Thanks. --Tewy 00:54, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You commented on this animated GIF's Featured Picture nomination. I'm considering a redesign to incorporate concerns raised but I need more clarity. Please see User talk:John Reid/Pi/Unrolled#FP?. Thank you. John Reid 08:46, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've been blocked

For reasons unknown to me I've been blocked from editing because it appears I share an IP (195.188.152.10) with Milly on Mheels who has been blocked. Clear me as soon as possible please. I've been editing on WP since January 2003 and this has never happened before.
Block details:
Your user name or IP address has been blocked from editing. You were blocked by Doc glasgow for the following reason (see our blocking policy): Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Milly on Mheels". The reason given for Milly on Mheels's block is: "user". Your IP address is 195.188.152.10.
- Adrian Pingstone 17:03, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Autoblock lifted. Sorry for the inconvenience. You yourself were not blocked and your reputation is intact. When we block a vandal, the system also blocks the vandal's IP address in order to stop them from continuing vandalising. Mostly this is a good thing. Sometimes, a genuine user gets caught up in what we then call "collateral damage". You acted correctly in bring attention to the problem and thanks for being reasonable about it when you have a right to be annoyed (at the software: there's nothing the editors can do about it, I'm afraid). With luck, you're now free, but call me (using the {{unblock}} template again) if you're still caught. Happy editing! ЯEDVERS 19:18, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Glad it's all working for you and welcome back to the land of the living! :o) Happy editing! ЯEDVERS 19:32, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nacked man mural

Hi Adrian,

I've a photo request for you (not urgent, but just if you happen to be passing). Could you get a shot of this graffitti/mural by Banksy - apparently its on the side of the Sexual Health Clinic in Frogmore St. It looks like Banksy's has a rising profile and his stunts are growing in size, so he could be quite interesting and an artist to watch. -- Solipsist 08:59, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've been blocked again, only 6 days after the first blocking discussed above

This user is asking that his block be reviewed:

Arpingstone (block log • active blocks • global blocks • contribs • deleted contribs • filter log • creation log • change block settings • unblock • checkuser (log))

Request reason:

I've done nothing whatever wrong, I just happen to share an IP with someone else

Notes:

  • In some cases, you may not in fact be blocked, or your block has already expired. Please check the list of active blocks. If no block is listed, then you have been autoblocked by the automated anti-vandalism systems. Please remove this request and follow these instructions instead for quick attention by an administrator.
  • Please read our guide to appealing blocks to make sure that your unblock request will help your case. You may change your request at any time.
Administrator use only:

If you ask the blocking administrator to comment on this request, replace this template with the following, replacing "blocking administrator" with the name of the blocking admin:

{{Unblock on hold |1=blocking administrator |2=I've done nothing whatever wrong, I just happen to share an IP with someone else |3 = ~~~~}}

If you decline the unblock request, replace this template with the following code, substituting {{subst:Decline reason here}} with a specific rationale. Leaving the decline reason unchanged will result in display of a default reason, explaining why the request was declined.

{{unblock reviewed |1=I've done nothing whatever wrong, I just happen to share an IP with someone else |decline = {{subst:Decline reason here}} ~~~~}}

If you accept the unblock request, replace this template with the following, substituting Accept reason here with your rationale:

{{unblock reviewed |1=I've done nothing whatever wrong, I just happen to share an IP with someone else |accept = accept reason here ~~~~}}

For reasons unknown to me I've been blocked from editing, by Essjay, because it appears I share an IP (195.188.152.16) with someone who has been blocked. Clear me as soon as possible please. I've been editing on WP since January 2003 and this has now happened twice in 6 days, It's highly irritating for this to happen to a respected long-term contributor.

Hi Arpingstone. I'm looking at it now. Sorry for your trouble. --Guinnog 17:34, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm looking forward to my unblock. Any way to stop this happening again and again? Thanks - Adrian Pingstone 17:40, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Try now. I've never done this before, I am new as an admin. Hope it works. --Guinnog 17:48, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well done, I can now edit as usual. Your work is much appreciated, thanks - Adrian Pingstone 17:50, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
