Hi Adrian
== Cracked windscreen ==

I am not familiar with 'behind the sceens' Wikipedia but I would like to use one of your images. It is the one of my son, Chris Pote, leaving RIAT at Fairford this year in his EurofoxLR G-GBNZ. It is already in the public domain, but I would prefer to be in contact with you and keep you informed of his progress. I am preparing a 'press release' for New Zealand and will send you a copy.
Just out of pure curiosity, after you removed it from the SAA article — is a cracked windscreen that common to not be an 'incident'? I'd have imagined otherwise, or are the fail-safes good enough? Thanks, [[User:Dewet|dewet]]|[[User_talk:Dewet|✉]] 15:46, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

::::{{tps}} Hello Sharad. Adrian doesn't seem to have edited here for a little while, so I hope neither you nor he will mind me stepping in, in the hope of helping. If you have a look at the photo's information at the link you gave, you will see that it says {{tq|28 July 2008}} once in the summary and twice in the metadata. Whilst these cannot ''absolutely'' be guaranteed accurate (Adrian ''might'' be a mad deceiver and ''might'' be editing the metadata and simply fibbing in the summary, or his camera's clock setting ''might'' have been wrong) it is very, very likely that they are correct. The metadata is supplied automatically by the camera and is very likely to be right, and most cameras' clocks will tend to be right or rightish. The balance of probabilities is very much in favour of 28 July 2008 though clearly 100% certainty would be hard to attain.
::::For my curiosity and perhaps Adrian's when he sees this, do you mind telling us where the photo is circulating and why the wrong information is a problem? I'm having grave difficulty imagining how this would work! Cheers [[User:DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered|DBaK]] ([[User talk:DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered|talk]]) 09:14, 10 July 2022 (UTC)

==Disambiguation link notification for November 4==
:Hi! I removed it simply because a cracked windscreen is not important enought to feature ''in an encyclopedia''. I'm not saying it's unimportant to the airline or the passengers, I'm only saying we need not feature such incidents in WP. I would guess every airline has had such things happen so we'd have a cracked windsereen or a burst tyre entry for every airline. We keep the Incidents heading for much more serious stuff. Thanks for asking - [[User:Arpingstone|Adrian Pingstone]] 15:52, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

:: I have no problem with the removal; as I said this was for my own curiousity. You seem knowledgeable about the airline industry, which is why I posed my question to you. ==Diyarbakir==
A recent user edit on the [[Diyarbakir]] page removed most of the pictures that had been there and replaced them with new ones. I don't think some of the new ones are of the same quality as the old ones (some are low quality scans) but don't want to "be bold" as I uploaded most of the earlier ones and may be biased. Hi, hoping you can offer some advice. I puchased (from an aviation collector's estate) an original black and white photo of a [[Miles Whitney Straight]], which I thought would be good to illustrate both that article, and the history of [[Aerial Topdressing]]. The problem is potential copyright. On the back is the stamp of Whites Aviation, (but no assertion of copyright). Whites aviation is a firm which came into existence after the (apparently pre war) photo appears to have been taken. Leo White was airplane buff and used to collect photos himself, and the estate included several hundred of his photos. I contacted the successor firm, sending a copy of the photo, and asking them if they owned copyright. Twice. 6 months ago. I have heard nothing back.
::Thank you for replying quickly. I am glad can remove the picture without any controversy. Happy Wiki-ing! [[User:Fritzmann2002|Fritzmann2002]] 13:20, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi!
My name is Zoltán Szőke. I work for the National Archives of Hungary (former ICCS member state!!!). I wrote my M.A. thesis on the ICCS (dealing mainly with the "controversial" role of the Hungarian delegation...) According to tens of thousands of primary archival sources there was an "of" in the commission’s name instead of a "for". It should be changed in the title of the article, too. I just couldn’t find out how. I'll be back later with more.

== Hello, this is Wastrel Way ==
==[[Grave marking industry]]==

Greetings from across the Atlantic! I see that you wrote the article on Tillandsia, and I thank you. I think this genus of plants is of interest to many people and there is much more to be said. I have done a bit of editing to the article and failed to upload a picture of one of my plants in bloom for a reason that I don't understand. I think there is much more to be done instead of repeating that "some of these plants live in the forest, some live in the desert, some are green and some are grey, some have thick leaves and the leaves of others are thinner" which is almost the way this article reads :-), and without sources. Some of it seems to be badly translated from German, and tried to fix that. If there is a general work on this genus of plants in English that I could obtain by inter-library loan I would like to know about it, if you know of it. Briefly, my background is in biology, zoology, then law and then computers and computer networks. I wrote the article [[Shoal Creek, Austin, Texas]] a year or two ago, and I am working on some others now, but I grow these plants and would welcome any suggestions you have for contributions that I might make. :: Hi from Adrian! Nice to hear from you. Yes, I have been quiet for some years now. I mainly worked on inserting aircraft pictures and on editing grammatical errors (my greatest hate is use of the word “current”). However, most aircraft articles are now fully illustrated so I found I could use very few of my aircraft pics, and I have no interest in just adding them into the huge collection on Commons. I grew tired of editing grammatical errors, so have stopped all contributions but could come back one day. I have opened a discussion [http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image_talk:DeHavilland_Comet.jpg here] because of a [http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image:DeHavilland_Comet.jpg&diff=next&oldid=1302539 change] that was done about a picture you took.

Greetings, [http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utilisateur:Djam Djam] 15:43, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

I contacted you a while back about your peccary image. Do you have any other PD images of interesting and or unusual animals? - [[User:MacGyverMagic|Mgm]]|[[User talk:MacGyverMagic|(talk)]] 22:12, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Do you have some more information on [[:Image:Gem.pebbles.800pix.jpg]]? Did you make it? If not, could you please indicate a source for it. I know it was uploaded long ago, but if you could clear up the copyright info on it, I'd be most grateful. --[[User:Kevin Breitenstein|Kevin_b_er]] 03:55, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
:Thanks for writing. Yes, the pic was made by me and is PD. I've changed the PD copyright message to the one it should have been, and added a sentence about how I made the pic. A comment was recently posted by [[User:Samsara|Samsara]] on the [[Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Siberian Tiger|Siberian tiger]] FPC. It concerned placing the image in another article (see [[Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Siberian Tiger|the subpage]] for the exact comment). I have now added the image to the [[stretching]] article, so you may or may not consider changing your vote (this is just to inform you of the change). For reasons unknown to me I've been blocked from editing because it appears I share an IP (195.188.152.10) with Milly on Mheels who has been blocked. Clear me as soon as possible please. I've been editing on WP since January 2003 and this has never happened before.<br>
Block details:<br>
'''Your user name or IP address has been blocked from editing.
'''You were blocked by Doc glasgow for the following reason (see our blocking policy):'''
'''Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Milly on Mheels". The reason given for Milly on Mheels's block is: "user".'''

*Autoblock lifted. Sorry for the inconvenience. You yourself were not blocked and your reputation is intact. When we block a vandal, the system also blocks the vandal's IP address in order to stop them from continuing vandalising. Mostly this is a good thing. Sometimes, a genuine user gets caught up in what we then call "collateral damage". You acted correctly in bring attention to the problem and thanks for being reasonable about it when you have a right to be annoyed (at the software: there's nothing the editors can do about it, I'm afraid). With luck, you're now free, but call me (using the {{tl|unblock}} template again) if you're still caught. Happy editing! Hi Adrian,

::::Ach, I don't blame you. I would have been annoyed too. This was a new one on me and I will read up on it some more. Does that mean you are assigned a new IP address each time you boot up/log on? (Originally written before you replied and I edit-conflicted with you. Still, I was sincere so the following still stands!)

Hi Arpingstone! I'm sorry to find you caught in collateral damage again: really sorry - you are a valued and respected editor and this doesn't help you out. As you can see, other valued editors also value you and are researching what can be done. We '''will''' all try to help you, please bear with us.

If you don't already know what is happening to you, please read [[Wikipedia:Autoblock]]. This explains how things here work and don't work. Emphasis, in these cases, on the latter. You might also be interested in [[Wikipedia:Advice to AOL users]]. This may not apply to you directly, but the advice is generally useful.

As I say, I join Guinnog and Netsnipe in being upset I can't help you more and more often. If you come back to the computer and are still blocked, please accept my apologies and put the <nowiki>{{unblock}}</nowiki> tag up again, with a copy-and-paste of the entire message you get. We'll try to move quickly on it. [[User_talk:Redvers|➨ ]]<b><font color="red">[[User:Redvers|ЯEDVERS]]</font></b> 18:50, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

:I really appreciate the messages from all of you (Guinog, Netsnipe and Redvers). I'm calmed down now, I only got in a strop because this has never happened to me since I joined WP in January 2003 (haven't I been lucky!). I know what to do now (i.e. post the Unblock Notice with full details). I also know that I can wait 24 hours (which would be quite a good thing because my wife complains frequently about how little cooking/gardening/DIY I do) and contact my ISP for a static IP and try rebooting. Best to you all - [[User:Arpingstone|Adrian Pingstone]] 19:03, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Dear Adrian, I have just seen your userpage edit and am wondering if urgent congrats are called for? If so please consider it done, and a certain song sung or played at you too. *I'm going to try something else. I'm going to actually reapply a block to the IP address but have it affect anonymous users only. This is a relatively new feature and I vaguely remember hearing that applying this sort of block might actually fix some bugs in some blocks. After I apply the block, I'll let you know so you can try to edit something. Please let me know if that fixed the problem. Thanks for your patience, and many apologies for this. --[[User:Deathphoenix|Deathphoenix]] [[User_talk:Deathphoenix|'''ʕ''']] 03:01, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

*Try rebooting your modem (unplugging it for about a minute) instead of your entire computer instead. Sometimes that changes your IP address. == More on the Great Blocking Saga ==
Thanks for the welcome message, a nice thought.<br>
All OK at the moment, at 8.16am UK time I'm not blocked. Thanks to all my friends for their efforts on my behalf. I'm out now until 2pm UK time, let's hope all will still be OK then - [[User:Arpingstone|Adrian Pingstone]] 07:20, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

:I'm now partially blocked (2pm UK time), by which I mean that I get a block on about one in five articles. Stranger still, the block is sometimes gone on a ''second'' attempt to edit an article that was refused ''first'' time. Gee, what a puzzle! However all is not lost, I think I've found a solution so I'm writing it up now in Word and I'll paste it in in 30 minutes or so - [[User:Arpingstone|Adrian Pingstone]] 13:55, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

== File:Wing.slat.600pix.jpg ==
::OK, here's my solution. (I've not tried the idea of unplugging the modem only because I may have a solution). My idea is successful at the moment and seems to have had no effect on my other computer operations (such as running my Norton virus checker, playing music and browsing the net). I needed to get rid of that "nasty" IP of 195.188.152.16 that I seem to have been allocated by my ISP (Telewest Broadband on a cable under the pavement). A cold reboot (including turning power off my modem) does not change the IP. So I had an idea.
Hi Adrian, it's been awhile since we've spoken, so I hope all is well with you. Do you happen to have a wider view of the aircraft in [[:File:Wing.slat.600pix.jpg]]? Some users are taking the "300" on the fuselage to mean it's an A300, while your file info clearly states that it's an "A310-300". A larger view ''might'' help settle the argumemt, and we could recrop it to show the full designation. Thanks. [[User:BilCat|BilCat]] ([[User talk:BilCat|talk]]) 01:35, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
::Hi from Adrian, nice to hear from you. I'm in good health and reached 80 years old in July (but no celebrations due to Mr (or Mrs) Virus). Nowadays I do very little on WP because the aircraft pages are mostly fully illustrated so I can use decreasingly few of my pictures. I do a little editing for grammar and style.
::In answer to your question, unfortunately I have no copy of that picture and no information on it. I tried looking for that window gap on pictures of prototypes and flight test aircraft, but no luck.
::Sorry I can’t help. I would have no objection to removal of the pic if the aircraft type remains uncertain. Best wishes, [[User:Arpingstone|Arpingstone]] ([[User talk:Arpingstone#top|talk]]) 18:29, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

:::Over 2 years later the question has come up again. But I also found [https://www.gettyimages.com.br/detail/foto-jornal%C3%ADstica/im-liniendienst-hat-sich-die-a310-300-der-kleine-foto-jornal%C3%ADstica/542870933?adppopup=true this photo of an A310-300] in the same livery, probably the same aircraft. It has the same window gap after the -300. I hope all is still well with you.
::I am running on a proxy server (although I haven’t the slightest idea what that means). So I got rid of the Proxy and now my IP has changed to 66.249.**.** (although some ISP finding sites tell me it’s 62.30.***.**) (better keep it a secret!) and all is well. I can edit all articles.

== Larger macaw picture? ==
::Here’s what I did: I went to any net site (Google will do), and from the top-of-screen menu selected TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS/CONNECTIONS/LAN SETTING, and removed the tick in the PROXY SERVER box (my browser is IE Version 6). The IP has now changed to the "good" one I showed above and all seems to be well. The change away from a proxy server does not seem to have affected my other computer operations. (I hope my ISP will not disapprove of what I’ve done).
Hello! Would you happen to have a higher resolution / wider crop of [[commons:File:Parrot.red.macaw.1.arp.750pix.jpg]]? It would make for a nice desktop background. I know the photo is 16+ years old now, so it's probably a long shot. [[User:Codl|codl]] ([[User talk:Codl|talk]]) 19:18, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
:: What a shame! In those far-off days I was stupid enough not to keep the larger resolution pic when I reduced them in size for WP. I don't remember why I used 750 pixels as my standard upload size. Nowadays of course I wouldn't do that! Thanks for writing, Best wishes [[User:Arpingstone|Arpingstone]] ([[User talk:Arpingstone#top|talk]]) 08:02, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

:Well I doubt that I can give you the best answer, but a [[proxy server]] is an intermediate computer that your ISP (or company) manages to help speed up internet access and reduce network load. If you have the proxy server enabled, when you ask for a web page, say http://news.bbc.co.uk, instead of going directly to the source, your browser asks the proxy server for it. If someone else on your ISP has recently asked for the same page, then the proxy server will already have stored a recent copy and it won't even bother to ask the BBC for an updated version and just give you its cached version. If you ask for an obscure or unique page, such as editing a minor page on Wikipedia, your proxy server probably won't have a local copy and so will have to ask Wikipedia for the HTML, then pass it on to you.
::Thanks for writing. Unfortunately I am completely baffled by what has happened! It's really weird!! :In practice most people using your ISP will have the proxy enabled, so irrespective of their individual dynamic IPs, Wikipedia will see most of the page requests as coming from the IP of the proxy server. If your local vandal is also using the proxy server, the proxy requests could end up being block, but cutting out the middle man makes your edits more individual. -- [[User:Solipsist|Solipsist]] 22:19, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi Adrian

I am not familiar with 'behind the sceens' Wikipedia but I would like to use one of your images. It is the one of my son, Chris Pote, leaving RIAT at Fairford this year in his EurofoxLR G-GBNZ. It is already in the public domain, but I would prefer to be in contact with you and keep you informed of his progress. I am preparing a 'press release' for New Zealand and will send you a copy. My email is ********. Cheers Jonathan--122.56.234.66 (talk) 02:11, 14 September 2018 (UTC) 122.56.234.66 (talk) 02:11, 14 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jonathon, thank you for writing, I have replied by email. By the way, I have removed your email (having taken a note of it) because to give it here is to invite email harvesting programs to send you lots of stuff you don't want! Hi Adrian...I am Sharad from India. Doing fact check story. Need your help. one of your photo is edited and circulating in social media with wrong information. you took a photo of bus in bath city. I want to know when was it taken.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tour_bus_in_bath_england_arp.jpg 223.233.78.185 (talk) 05:32, 10 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) Hello Sharad. Adrian doesn't seem to have edited here for a little while, so I hope neither you nor he will mind me stepping in, in the hope of helping. If you have a look at the photo's information at the link you gave, you will see that it says 28 July 2008 once in the summary and twice in the metadata. Whilst these cannot absolutely be guaranteed accurate (Adrian might be a mad deceiver and might be editing the metadata and simply fibbing in the summary, or his camera's clock setting might have been wrong) it is very, very likely that they are correct. The metadata is supplied automatically by the camera and is very likely to be right, and most cameras' clocks will tend to be right or rightish. The balance of probabilities is very much in favour of 28 July 2008 though clearly 100% certainty would be hard to attain.
For my curiosity and perhaps Adrian's when he sees this, do you mind telling us where the photo is circulating and why the wrong information is a problem? I'm having grave difficulty imagining how this would work! Cheers DBaK (talk) 09:14, 10 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Update: ah, I see ... stuff like this. Interesting. Oh and this one: Adrian, you must watch the video! Does this stuff happen to you all the time?? Cheers DBaK (talk) 09:19, 10 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hullo, I am Adrian Pingstone. I have gone back through my photos and checked the date of the bus pic. I definitely took it on 28th July 2008 in Bath (I live about 15 miles away and my wife likes shopping there). Thanks for your question. Big thanks to DBak for a great reply. Hello! I am working on the article Hypericum. We are hoping to include the picture of yours (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/60/Grey_square_optical_illusion.PNG) in this book (Chapter 6, Figure 6.23b). Could we please have your permission for this? Thank you.

Hello, this is Wastrel Way[edit]

I wrote the article Shoal Creek, Austin, Texas a year or two ago, and I am working on some others now, but I grow these plants and would welcome any suggestions you have for contributions that I might make. Hello[edit]

Hi Adrian. We used to interact many many years ago here when I edited under a different name. I greatly value your contributions and I note you've been a bit quiet recently. Are you OK? I do hope so. With all good wishes DBaK (talk) 13:39, 1 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi from Adrian! I do have a session of adding pictures after each Fairford Air Show so I will always add something each year. Thanks for writing, Best wishes, Arpingstone (talk) 09:00, 19 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry I never replied to this – when I read it I was in India and had plenty of other things on my mind, and then a school trip to Wales and then some wretched pandemic intervened. Thank you for your pictures of South west England! File:Wing.slat.600pix.jpg[edit]

Hi Adrian, it's been awhile since we've spoken, so I hope all is well with you. Do you happen to have a wider view of the aircraft in File:Wing.slat.600pix.jpg? Some users are taking the "300" on the fuselage to mean it's an A300, while your file info clearly states that it's an "A310-300". A larger view might help settle the argumemt, and we could recrop it to show the full designation. Thanks. BilCat (talk) 01:35, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi from Adrian, nice to hear from you. I'm in good health and reached 80 years old in July (but no celebrations due to Mr (or Mrs) Virus). Nowadays I do very little on WP because the aircraft pages are mostly fully illustrated so I can use decreasingly few of my pictures. I do a little editing for grammar and style.
In answer to your question, unfortunately I have no copy of that picture and no information on it. I tried looking for that window gap on pictures of prototypes and flight test aircraft, but no luck.
Sorry I can’t help. I would have no objection to removal of the pic if the aircraft type remains uncertain. Best wishes, Arpingstone (talk) 18:29, 16 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Over 2 years later the question has come up again. But I also found this photo of an A310-300 in the same livery, probably the same aircraft. It has the same window gap after the -300. I hope all is still well with you.

Larger macaw picture?[edit]

Hello! Would you happen to have a higher resolution / wider crop of commons:File:Parrot.red.macaw.1.arp.750pix.jpg? It would make for a nice desktop background. I know the photo is 16+ years old now, so it's probably a long shot. codl (talk) 19:18, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What a shame! In those far-off days I was stupid enough not to keep the larger resolution pic when I reduced them in size for WP. I don't remember why I used 750 pixels as my standard upload size. Nowadays of course I wouldn't do that! Thanks for writing, Best wishes Arpingstone (talk) 08:02, 16 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
